I think we can all agree the last thread was lacking :v: Project Reality http://youtube.com/watch?v=-TUrwljskNg So basically, Project Reality is a Battlefield 2 mod that strives for realism.
Project Reality is a free to download game modification for the Battlefield 2 (BF2) retail windows game. The Reality Mod installs alongside the existing game installation allowing both the original game and Project Reality to be played separately without causing conflicts. The Mod developers aims are to rework the original game engine developed by Digital Illusions of Sweden (Dice) within legal and feasible constraints to create a more realistic combat environment for the gaming community. This includes adjusting various gameplay elements including physics, visual effects and overall game play formats. Along with changes to how the game handles, the PR team has introduced the British, Russian, Taliban and Insurgent factions, plus a number of community assisted factions are currently in the works to introduce Canadian, IDF forces and multiple others to the virtual battlefield. Project Reality has won second place two years running in ModDB.com's annual Mod of the Year competition (2006 & 2007), culminating in first place in 2008. The competition is the definitive event that showcases the best mods and indie games in the world and recognises the teams behind them. The Project Reality team comprises a group of dedicated individuals, several of whom have backgrounds in armed services and whose sole task is to provide researched material, including statistical information to the developers. These are in turn tasked with coding and creating the mod itself. If you are looking for a fact based first person shooter from the perspective of a combat soldier, we feel Project Reality will provide for your gaming needs. "Battlefield is all about fun, action-oriented gameplay. We'll leave the truly realistic experiences to the mod teams who thrive on that type of action." (DICE) "Battlefield will always be first about fun and secondly about realism. Realism implies complexity." (Sean Decker) "As close to war as you are going to get when it comes to the Battlefield franchise" (TotalBF2.com) "Get ready for one of the meanest, most ruthlessly-demanding shooter experiences around." (IGN.com) The Mod is currently in its fifteenth incarnation, Project Reality 0.91. In its earliest forms, the Project Reality Mini-Mod series began as a platform to experiment with certain realism changes and analyse their impact on gameplay with the retail BF2 engine. As the changes have progressed into tried and tested features it has become a product with a frequent release schedule which provides the gaming community with ever increasing material on the battlefield whilst improving on the realistic gaming necessary to satisfy their needs. The ultimate goal continues to be the path to develop and release Project Reality v1.0, a stable and complete build which will be a markedly increased step up from the Project Reality Mini-Mod beginnings. This will include a complete British faction, including their various soldier classes, weaponry, vehicles and assets, as well as additional factions created by the community with help from the core developers.
The mod is amazing, the game is nothing like Battlefield 2 anymore once you install this mod. They offer new and larger maps, weapons, vehicles, updated graphics, and even realistic ballistics such as bullet drop and different types of ammunition. Factions

United States Marine Corps (updated from BF2)
Peoples Liberation Army (updated from BF2)
Middle East Coalition (updated from BF2)
British Army
Russian Forces
United States Army
Canadian Forces
Israeli Defense Force
Chechen Rebels
Taliban
Iraqi Insurgents
Hamas
As you can see, there are a lot of factions, and there are lots of weapons, vehicles, and maps to back them all up. And you get to play as fucking CANADIANS! Custom Game Modes:

AAS - Assault and Secure focuses the battles over a few key areas. These areas have very large capture radius (100-300m), which means its about area control rather than flag capture. In fact flags are not visible in the game world at all. In addition to the large capture radius, many of the Control Points are set to be random, so each new round of AAS has a different flag layout, immensely increasing the re-playability of the game mode over traditional vBF2 Conquest.
Insurgency - Two teams, Coalition and Insurgents. Coalition start with a set amount of tickets and their objective is to destroy 7 Insurgent caches located around the map. By killing insurgents they gain Intel and once you have enough Intel you will be able to see the general area of a Cache, it will appear as a blue marker on your map and only 2 caches are spawned on the map at a time. Insurgents are to defend the caches and eliminate all of the Coalition's forces.
There are more gamemodes than this but these are the main two.
Innovative Spawn System - Project Reality has a new way to handle player respawns. There is no more spawning on flags or appearing around squad leaders like in regular Battlefield 2. Instead, the players now have the control of where they want their reinforcements to come in via deployable rally points and player built forward outposts. Revamp of soldier equipment - All soldier classes now carry realistic equipment and useful tools such as: Bayonets, Entrenching Tools, long lasting Smoke Grenades, Binoculars, Field Dressings, and Incendiary Grenades. Only a few classes carry a sidearm, and only pilots are equipped with a parachute. Non-cluttered HUD - the Heads-Up Display has been heavily tweaked, keeping with a minimalist theme that only shows you what you need to see, and allowing the mods powerful updated graphics to be the most prominent feature instead of non-essential 2D information. The following vBF2 HUD elements have been removed: Cross-hairs, Long Range Name Tags, Enemy Name Tags, Hit & Kill Indication, Health Bar, Ammo Bar, Infantry Minimap, Ticket Counter (now on map only). The Project Reality HUD allows you to focus on what matters. Kit Request System - Unique to Project Reality, special powerful kits with specialized roles have now been limited and made available to squads that request them. By realistically rationing unique and powerful equipment, squads now have more realistic loadouts, and have to use them effectively if their team is to win. These kits include: Officer, Rifleman with Iron Sights. Rifleman with Scope, Rifleman with Grapple Hook, Combat Medic, Sniper, Anti Tank, Engineer, Anti Air, Rifleman AT, Automatic Rifleman. Grenadier, Designated Marksman, Crewman, Pilot and of course, the Civilian Updated Commander Features - Commanders play a vital role in Project Reality as the communications hub and central command organization of the team. Commanders are expected to give squads orders and oversee the entire battle strategy of the team. They are required to command the battle using the Command Post with the new Map Marker system. Commanders can place GPS laser markers for laser guided bombs, call in JDAM strikes, various forms of Artillery, and mark waypoints and minefields. New Deployable Asset System - Never before seen in a realistic First Person Shooter, Project Reality has a unique building system. Squads can now deploy vital equipment and weapons on the battlefield to defend and control key areas. With the proper supplies; squads can dig foxhole defenses, deploy machine-gun nests and AA positions, string razor-wire and deploy forward outposts that act as a reinforcement (spawn) point for your team. The positions these are deployed at are completely up to the players discretion - this allows the players to have complete control of how the assets are used strategically, allowing players to use smart tactics to control areas of strategic importance. Logistics - Project Reality has introduced a logistics system that ensures that a team that works together can ensure that supplies, repairs and ammo are always at hand near the front line. Close Air Support - Players can now take advantage of real modern equipment to coordinate close air support. Jets and attack helicopters across the board now use a laser designation system, allowing infantry units to designate targets for attack. In addition, squad leaders can call in air support via the commander in the form of a 2,000lb JDAM bomb. Single Player - Project Reality supports Single Player gaming, as well as promoting teamwork-based multiplayer. Simply download the PRSP addon to enable Single Player.
Screenshots Videos But wait, PR doesn't end there. The devs plan on taking PR much further. Currently they are working a Vietnam mini-mod for PR and they are bringing Project Reality to ArmA 2. On top of that, they are currently in planning stages for a Project Reality game on the C4 Engine. This game is amazing, and even if you don't like realism games, atleast try it. Haha, torque engine.
No German Army? :(
As I said in the last thread, I just bought BF2 Complete Edition, and downloaded PR. I just need to find a decent server that is nice to starters.
No German Army? :(
that's one of the many factions currently in the works
PR is cool me and my airsoft buddies play it and we're always top squad on the server.
If we were able to get a group together and play, I'd try and reinstall PR. I always get this weird problem where textures start to disappear and become static, though.
This mod makes me want BF2. I wonder if I can get the guys at my local cyber cafe to download it.
The only and really only thing i hate about PR is the "cone of fire". I wish they could make a weaponshake or something cause i hate to see my bullets fly way of the spot im aiming.

This deviation is in place to avoid the game from going "Insurgency" and everyone having laser tag guns. Wasn't there going to be a JSDF faction to be added in the future? I'd love to see that.
jsdf?
Japan Self-Defense Forces.
ah, that makes sense [editline]03:23PM[/editline] i took these the other day
Well Japan is almost purely reliant on US protection anyway.
I'm going to install this right now. Anyone willing to make a server to teach us new FP'ers the basics? [editline]04:33PM[/editline]
Well Japan is almost purely reliant on US protection anyway.
This. As much as I love the JSDF it's pointless to put them in the game when you have other factions that attribute more to the experience. JSDF aren't very experienced anyway and they don't have a standing army, just the Defense Force. All it would do it put more work on them they don't need.
Read the manual that comes in every installation, or go here. http://www.realitymod.com/manual/Project_Reality_v0.91_Manual.pdf This thread is 10x better than the last thread. Good job OP. I was planning on making one myself but never got around to doing it. You should put in the factions that are currently being developed.
I got it all up, what's a good server? I have all night.
Will I get screamed at or kicked if I don't use a mic?
I would play this if I could go onlike. For some reason, anytime I try to go online in any Battkefiled game, it ctds. I click "Join Server" or whatever and it just goes to the desktop. It's really frustrating.
Well, I have a Mic I just need a decent server, I'm brand new at this.
I will gladly download it again, but a storm knocked my internet, so I have to wait. I'm typing from my Droid. Getting a group together would be great. Mics would help for coordination and general fucking about, but I assume they shouldn't be required.
I have experience in JROTC and Airsoft if that helps any. Facepunch clan would be nice. [editline]09:05PM[/editline] The ArmA2 clan that was around before they found out their leader was a phony.
When did they add the Canadian forces? I'm tempted to re-install BF2 just for that.
I really want to get into this but it's damn near impossible if you don't have anyone to help you. Sucks.
As I said in the last thread, I just bought BF2 Complete Edition, and downloaded PR. I just need to find a decent server that is nice to starters.
Yeah this is the hardest part. I think they took out the training serves (but they didn't help much because the atmosphere was so different from the real servers) Just choose a server and squad and stick with it. Squad members perfer a noob who is teachable rather than someone who "lone wolfs" and doesn't communicate. A mic is also very important. Almost everyone uses them and even for a mic holdout like myself, finally getting one made the game much more enjoyable.
I've yet to hear a single human voice so far. I don't know what button I press to use mine either. I've never played BF2.
I really want to get into this but it's damn near impossible if you don't have anyone to help you. Sucks.
Just persist. It would be hard to learn the whole thing just right now because admittedly, the game has alot of rules and mechanics which dont come to most games. (Like choosing a limited kit [sniper, anti-tank, special ops] at certain areas. Having to wait 2 minutes for a heli to warm up) This probably doesnt help, but try reading the manual. While it can never teach you everything, getting the basics down makes the learning curve alot easier I would like to see a facepunch server up there. [editline]06:58PM[/editline] Codemonkey, you have to be in proximity of people to hear their voices, or being in a squad. The button is "V" I believe. Heres a quick primer: http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f138-infantry-tactics/50939-bf2-going-pr-tips.html
Cool, a proper megathread. Good job OP. Too bad I can't play it on Windows 7 still :/
I seriously need to get this game. Just need my new pc.
