MAG is an upcoming MMOish FPS from Zipper Interactive, the guys who did practically every SOCOM game. The big thing about MAG is that is features up to 256 player battles! That's a lot of players; more than any other shooter on console and maybe even to date. You play by making a character from some customization options and picking one of three PMCs (Private Military Corporations).
Raven

Raven works primarily with the nations of Europe, and is comprised largly of German, French, and Italian nationals. A massive corporation with ties to numerous defense industry giants, Raven is managed by a pair of former special-forces operatives. Raven's soldiers are high-tech, streamlines, and elite; for the most part, they are non-veterans who have been exposed to the latest virtual training techniques and physical training regimes in order to enhance their battlefield prowess.
Raven has lower power on their weapons but higher accuracy overall.
S.V.E.R.

Rebellious, covert, and with a checkered history, S.V.E.R. recruits heavily from the nations of China, India, and Russia. The least established of the "big three" PMCs, S.V.E.R. has only recently become a legitimate defense corporation. Its operatives consist of former soldiers and private citizens, some with rumored criminal backgrounds. Unconventional in their look, designation, and style, S.V.E.R. believes in intimidation, respect, improvisation and honor.
S.V.E.R has higher power on their weapons but lower accuracy overall.
Valor

Well funded and experienced, Valor was founded by a group of former US Army officers who pulled in seasoned combat veterans of the US, British, and Mexican Special Forces. As a group with deeply experienced ranks, Valor Company knows that peace requires sacrifice and discipline. They are bold, brash, and flexible; they also believe in the "soldier's code", particularly when facing less scrupulous opponents. Their equipment is battle-tested and reliable.
Valor has balanced weaponry and no advantage in power or accuracy.
Gameplay
There are several modes to play in MAG, from smaller scale 64 man fights up to the huge 256 battles. The way they make this work is by splitting up the battles between squads and platoons. A platoon is made up by four squads which hold 8 men each. A company is made up of four platoons. How many quads and platoons are present depends on the mode. Overall, for every battle you win or lose, this will affect your PMCs status in the Shadow War. Having high status in a specific mode will grant you bonuses to experience.
Suppression
Suppression is a basic team deathmatch mode. Two platoons within the same faction fight against each other, and whoever depletes the other teams forces first wins. You have access to this mode at level 1.
Sabotage
Sabotage is a 64 player mode where you battle over three objectives against another PMC. One platoon of a faction defends two outer objectives while a platoon from another faction attacks. When the two outer objectives are seized, the defending team falls back to an objective deeper in their own territory which the attacking team has to plant a bomb and defend it until it blows up to win. You gain access to this mode at level 2.
Acquisition
Acquisition is a 128 player mode where an attacking team must fight through a heavily defended base of another PMC and acquirer two special vehicles to take back to their drop off point. In this mode, the defending team has access to bunkers with anti-infantry machine guns, radar, anti-air placements, and motor pools for vehicles that all must be taken out of the defending team wants the easiest time capturing the special vehicles. You gain access to this mode at level 4.
Domination
Domination is the big one. 256 players, one company per side, attack and defend a base with multiple points to capture and hold by the attacking side. The more points the attacking side have, the faster they will win. The defending forces must hold out. There are many static placements that the defending side has to help them win and the attackers must destroy them if they are to break through the lines.
Directives
If you chose Directives you will put into a mode where your PMC needs you the most.
Squads and Leadership
Squad management in this game is key. In a single squad you have the squad leader who sets your objectives at a base level. Doing these objectives will net you extra experience. He also grants his squad mates a bonus if you are close by. In a platoon you have four squad leaders that talk to the platoon leader who will help manage overall objectives for everyone in the platoon. He grants a large bonus if people in his platoon are within range of him. In a Domination game there are four platoon leaders. Above the platoon leaders is the Officer in Charge (OiC). This guy manages every platoon and is in charge of making sure shit gets done by each platoon leader. The OiC grants bonuses to the entire company. You must be level 15 or greater for any leadership role.
Character Customization
You'll make a character and have a limited pick of weapons and equipment when you first start. As you play you will gain ranks and one skill point per rank up. These skill points to to new equipment. Equipment is separated into several categories...
Assault - Revolves around assault rifles and their various upgrades.
Persona Defense - Focused around sidearms and knife skills.
Athleticism - Personal improvement to your soldiers such as sprint time and damage resistance.
Close Quarters - Shotgun and Sub-Machine Gun upgrades.
Electronics - Equipment like motions sensors and explosive detectors.
Marksman - Sniper rifles and their upgrades.
Heavy - Light Machine Guns and Rocket Launchers
Explosives - AP mines, AT mines, and gas grenades
Support - Improved repair and resuscitation.
There are also a large list of personal awards and stat tracking.
Personal Thoughts
I loved the game and beta and for the two days it has been out have been a blast. People have microphones and are communicating, all modes are being played, and PMC population has been pretty even so far. As more people get into Domination it should get more intense. Graphics are a bit weak, but for having 256 players on the field at once the game has to take a hit somewhere. Networking is great and I've only had one instance of lag so far, including my time in the beta. If you own a PS3 and are looking for an FPS, get MAG.
MAG has hit retail in North America on January 26, 2010 and is out in Europe on January 29, 2010.
Sorry to shit all over your thread, but I think the game is just aweful. (I played the beta)
And before some chuckle fuck says BUT IT'S ONLY THE BETA BLAH BLAH this game just cannot be saved.
Why?
Seriously. Reasoning helps here.
I too would like an explanation. Despite me never going to play this game.
I wish they didn't lock the training mission for Raven. Now I have to wait until I can rent it to properly try it.
Also FUCK friendly-fire.
I just felt the gameplay seemed stiff and unresponsive, plus there's two threads already on the front page.

Shit game, servers will not be there this time next year.

theres 2 threads already... even on the first page for christ's sake
Been playing it for the past few days now and I'm loving it. I will try and pick this up when it gets out. The fps can get a bit bad when it gets intense but it's still playable. I love it, mainly because I am a huge sucker for large scale multiplayer games.

I can't seem to get them to work at all. Not like it matters, I'm mostly the MVP of my squad anyway. :smug:
I think some people need to give MAG more of a go. At first I thought it was crap, but then I decided to start playing it properly, communicating and working with my team and it was a lot more fun and we were more successful. It's certainly a unique experience, and the sabotage gamemode doesn't really reflect the true awesomeness of MAG, Domination and Acquisition are far better gamemodes/
SVER is over powered.
SVER vs RAVEN maps are unbalanced as fuck.

I've only ever played as SVER so I can't comment, but we do tend to win quite a lot.
It sounds awesome but I only have an Xbox 360. Damn.
This is one of the first games I'll buy if I ever get a PS3.
Is it anything like the Battlefield games? (namely 2142 as that's the only one i've actually brought)

So can anyone go ito any specifics as to why they think this game was bad?
I was actually considering buying a PS3 for this game and Heavy Rain.

I noticed, I used to be OIC for RAVEN. Some squad placements have a ridiculous amount of obstacles just to get near the first objective. It's a mess, I'm gonna give SVER a try tonight seeing as it wiped my other character.
And I recommend everyone takes a look at this to get a hang of things.

And to any Squad Leaders, Platoon Leaders, and OIC's out there, here is a small how-to on how to properly execute teamwork.

Yeah, two threads already but one is about the beat (which ends in three days) and one is retarded bitching by someone who has ONE post.
Wait, three days till the end of the open beta?
If so, fuck it, I don't want to make another character that's just gonna get wiped.

I'm playing Valor and I've noticed this as well. We tend to win against Raven and lose against SVER. Hopefully they'll balance the game a bit after release.
Zipper said the Raven maps suck ass and they are working on fixing them up for release.
Zipper said the Raven maps suck ass and they are working on fixing them up for release.
They better move SVER's spawn points further back, the defensive on SVER's side has spawns at the objective. SVER also has a significant power over any type of armor RAVEN wears, so if anyone is on RAVEN and is about to vs SVER, switch your armor to light, the heavy armor makes no difference for some reason.
I know it seems like I have a grudge against SVER, but that's because I do.
Every game i played against VALOR, I had fun, the spawns and weapons felt very equal and I never truly got pissed off. But god damnit, SVER needs to be fixed badly.
I still have mixed feelings about this game. It doesn't lag, the battles are of an epic proportion on Domination. The customization is good fun to play with and the gameplay is varied. Though thanks to the lack of microphone users on the PS3 it can be a bit annoying to get stuff done, the game overall feels really unfinished (I doubt they would be able to polish this in the given time span, unless we got an old build), and the factions need a slight re-balance.
I don't know whether I'd buy this or not really.
Valor is the best.
Lvl 10 direct attack. It is really hard to get kills in the 256 person match.
Raven's weapon's blow. Their sniper is effectively useless. I found one of SVER's off a corpse and it killed in around two shots, the Raven one takes four-sometimes more for inexplicable reasons.
The game is interesting in concept, but how they pulled it off was lackluster.
What is so bad about it?! why is it lackluster!
I found the beta a real disappointment and I thought Raven were British people :v:.
I'm playing Valor and I've noticed this as well. We tend to win against Raven and lose against SVER. Hopefully they'll balance the game a bit after release.
SVER poses no threat to Valor, all the games I've played against them ended in our victory.
Raven is the only threat.
Been watching a long gameplay vid of a Valor (I think) vs Raven match. 256 player
It's reminding me alot of war rock, and a number of other crappy korean FPSs.
The guy playing also got lost a few times, and in general seemed to fumble with the controls.

256 matches are horrid, they are epic, buy they are hell.
Will try this out, I hear mixed reactions about it, even if it is average, it will definitely be an experience
