• I miss being a naïve gamer

I remember being a few years younger and didn't expect so much from games. It was a happier time, i'd see an advert or some sort of media for a new game and get excited thinking it looked great! I used to just walk into a PC shop and look for a game, pick it up, read the back, if it was appealing i'd buy it. 9 times out of 10 I would have enjoyed it because I wouldn't expect something ground-breaking. The last time that ever happened to me was looking around and i saw Oblivion on the shelf. Now this was 4 years ago, the guy in the shop walked over and said 'if your looking for an RPG, this is it', i didn't doubt him. I bought it, and i still play it today. Nowadays when i see a new game announced or if something pops up on steam i can so easily watch game-play and not be impressed in the slightest. It's very difficult for something to actually make be excited and look forward to a release date because i've lost that innocence in gaming. I actually evaluate in my head how long it will last, like with Sniper Ghost warrior i just thought 'Looks like they took Call of duty, forced you to use the sniper and made some levels' (Especially with the multi-player anyway). I can't quite shake this. I really miss that sense of 'ooh a nice looking front-cover, this game looks great i'll buy it!' way of thinking. How many people have gone through this?
of course such is life when you grow up you start to actually evaluate everything instead of haphazardly buying whatever lol
I feel the same way. New titles don't really phase me anymore. Except -if- they are groundbreaking. Or just really good.
You used to be excited when your father took you to the games store and you'd be in heaven when seeing all those games, nowadays all you see on the shelf is shit and you mostly buy your stuff from steam or other download services. [editline]04:22PM[/editline] Ignorance is bliss, no?

Don't worry : starcraft 2 (map editor) diablo 3 red orchestra HOS NS2 (it sucks for now)
Screw the game store, who remembers their fun time with browser games? Runescape, Neopets, Miniclip.com, Armor Games, Newgrounds (which, oddly enough, I found out about from Neopets), all that stuff. It was like a kid in not just the candy shop, but a candy warehouse!
People just look for the perfect game and don't bother trying what is on the shelf they haven't heard of.
I still do this. But usually I look at the cheaper ones and pick from there. That's how I found the original hoi stuff
Newgrounds
foamy the squirrel. the awsome series salad fingers the occasionaly sexualy depraved game yeah, newgrounds is fucking awsome
Don't forget club-a-seal.
Congratulations, you've grown up. In about 5~8 years you'll be completely bored of video games, and your computer will start to collect dust as slowly you stop bothering with it. Until finally selling it/never booting it up for anything but a quick look at wikipadia, google or youtube. Because to be honest, the more you age the more you responsibility falls on you and the more you think how video games contribute fuckall to your life.
Yeah I'm angry that I don't buy video games anymore unless they are highly anticipated and big budget. It sucks because I miss a lot of good games that are "really" mainstream. Like, I bought the saboteur cheap recently and I really enjoyed it and it makes me think what other gems I've missed.
This thread made me sad, because I know exactly what you mean.
Congratulations, you've grown up. Well, I found Bad Company 2 to be pretty impressive playing it the first time. A lot of the campaign was taken right off other games, but somehow I found it just as entertaining. I think we're all just reaching the age where we've all seen everything ingame, and that the majority of nowdays games are about realism and graphics, rather than kick-ass stories and gameplay.

A thousand agrees and then some.
Last time i felt that was when i played half life 2 for the first time, i just wish i could go back and re-live the experience.
Last game I enjoyed that was actually a big name was Fallout 3. I still play it almost daily, but I just haven't been able to get into the recent major games.
I miss the days when games were about gameplay and fun and not about having a multimillion dollar budget.
I completely agree, i now do research in games before i buy them. I used to just pick a game that looked good on the box and get all surprised.
I think the rising price of games also has something to do with it. Back then, games were cheaper and you could afford to buy them just based on their cover. Now that they're $50-$60, you can't do that anymore.
THe thing is, I believe that's because not as many games are made to the level they were before. Yes, as a kid I thought some games were great. Might have been me being naive, but I can load up any game I still have from like 9-10 years ago and still enjoy it, simply because I think they were better in general. I think games back then were more risk taking and more creative. Now it seems you can't bother making anything other than a pseudo-military simulator.
I remember my first time playing HL2, my jaw propped open from sheer awe.
First time i bought hl2 was like buying my first really good game. (I player deus ex, Morrowind'Diablo 1 and Cod 1 before that) So the graphics and gameplay where just... wow!! I had few years while where i didnt have any WOW moments in any game after that. Cod MW1, Mass effect, Deadspace, Asassins Creed II gave me that feeling again, all in like 1.5 years time.
I know the feeling, Ignorance was such bliss, even if the game so really bad you still played the hell out of it, because there was so little else avaliable. I wish I could go back to that, when you judged the game by it's cover and loved it.
So very few games still give me the feeling of wow, the rest are just oh , recycled old game. :saddowns:

So many hours wasted with runescape.
