• Why did they remove the option to change your name in CSS

Anyone know why they decided to remove the option to change your name from the option menu in css? It's really annoying actually because I'm in a CSS clan and a GMOD clan, It gets really annoying having to change my name whenever I want to play a different game. It was fine the way it was, I didn't see any reason to change it. What are your thoughts on this? Sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Because it's unneeded and the engine update.
It's not really unneeded, It's not like it caused any major problems :/. Not having it is an inconvenience for some people
I prefer the new name system over the old one.
I can see where they were going with it, But it makes it difficult for some people who are in different clans for different source games
Didn't they implement a new clan system recently? You could use that I guess.
Valve didn't like the idea of people having different names in-game then their real Steam names. Which is lame because I liked to go on zombie servers, name myself Bill, and play Bill lines from L4D. :frown:
Then they removed setinfo name so I cant take someones name and get the wrong person banned anymore. :crying:
Clans are useless and stupid. Most members are 12-year olds with weird letters and numbers and TalK lIkE ThIS

What they are meant to be is a bunch of friends who like to play together, maybe even competitively.
You can change your name while in-game by going to Friends. It's no different than going to Options and changing your name like it was before.
I remember really hating this when the new engine came out in 2007. I still quite like the old system... Not to mention to spray system. I used to use CSS to upload sprays and import them to New Engine games because the new engine is finicky as hell about the exact size of the image and shit.
Personally, clan tags are stupid, and only really young kids like them. The new system makes it much simpler and easier imho.
What is the "New System"?
New engine disables the name command and runs off the steam community page. It sucks cause if you want to ban someone you could always disguise and not worry but now you can't. Though clan tags are nice but I'd like a text box to right a private clan not always steam
Do it on steam.
I prefer this new system, I hate when people constantly change their nicks.
setinfo name still works in gmod last I checked, so you could add "setinfo name name" in the gmod autoexec and use the CSS clan tag system while leaving your name untagged on the friends list

"GMOD clan"? What
I like it, because it's easier to mute mic-spammers and 6 year olds since people can't have names different from their steam nick.
What's the point of having them?
I preferred the original way myself, but it does this for all EP2 games, not just CSS, you know. It is handy, but I like changing my name for gimmicky jokes, and that spams up my chat windows/the View Known Alias feature.
I am known on different games/servers by nicknames, it's like changing say Facepunch to FORCE You have your real name, just imagine that shit. I don't wanna change my name in steam and get people on steam friends confused even if they can check aliases.
May as well put all your clan tags in your name so you don't have to switch back and forth. Not being able to grief and get other people banned isn't exactly a valid complaint, though, that's probably part of the reason they changed it.

setinfo name "" would set your name as nothing and you would appear as unconnected in the server (admins also could not kick you because your name was blank) It was also possible to change your name and get other people banned by being a copy cat.
This was in TF2, GMOD and all the multiplayer OB mods for ages now
"GMOD clan"? What
More like a fun group.
I think it's so it's easier to find someones steam account from their in-game name for adding friends and such. I may be wrong 'cause I haven't played CS:S in a long time.
