Set in the fictional Kingdom of Khanduras, located in the world of Sanctuary, Diablo has the player take control of a lone hero battling to rid the world of Diablo, the Lord of Terror. Beneath the town of Tristram, the player journeys through sixteen dungeon levels, ultimately entering Hell itself in order to face Diablo. An expansion pack, entitled Diablo: Hellfire, was released in 1997, although it was not created by Blizzard Entertainment. This was followed by a sequel, Diablo II, in 2000, and a third game, Diablo III, was announced on June 28, 2008, at Blizzard's World Wide Invitational in Paris, France. A PlayStation Diablo version was also released. Diablo is one of the most well-known examples of the action-RPG sub-genre. Although players level up, choose character classes, and manage a variety of spells and equipment as in a typical RPG, all actions are done in real time, as in an action game. Diablo in some ways resembles roguelike games, though major differences include the commercial quality of the game's graphics, the fact that it plays in real time rather than as turn-based, that games can be restored after the player dies where most roguelikes feature permadeath, and Diablo's relatively short learning curve. Diablo was influenced by Moria and Angband. The majority of commands in Diablo, such as moving and attacking, are executed by mouse clicks; however, learned spells can be assigned hot keys. Gameplay is structured around a monster-filled dungeon located near the town of Tristram. In town, players may rest, buy items, and repair equipment. There are sixteen levels of the dungeon, divided into four areas. Each area has a different appearance, architecture, light level, monster mix, and musical soundtrack. The first level of each of these areas has an additional exit leading back up to the town of Tristram. In single player, these entrances are blocked until the character opens them from the dungeon side, and the entrance is available for two-way travel from then on. In multiplayer, the entrances to town all start in their "open" position, but with a level requirement to access them from town. Diablo is highly re-playable due to its randomly generated level layouts, monsters, and items. In addition, in single-player mode there are only three core quests as the rest of them are drawn from several pools, making it impossible to complete every quest in one playthrough of the game. Either way, only the last two quests are compulsory. Given this arrangement, no two playthroughs of the game are ever exactly alike. Warrior The warrior is a powerful melee fighter, master of weapons of war and capable of enduring more damage than the other classes. They range from barbarians of the northern highlands to noble paladins. Rogue The rogues are the best archers in the world of Sanctuary. They can have a higher level of magic than warriors, although not nearly as high as sorcerers. The rogues belong to a group called the Sisterhood of the Sightless Eye. Sorcerer A powerful master of the arcane arts, the sorcerer is able to achieve the greatest heights of magic, so that he doesn't have need of physical weapons. Sorcerers belong to the Vizjerei mage clan, and have come to Tristram seeking long-lost tomes of magic knowledge under the cathedral. [img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/20/Diabloscreen.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://sites.google.com/site/physicsmaester/d1-1.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://img.informer.com/screenshots/9/9237_2.jpg[/img_thumb] Diablo II is a dark fantasy/horror-themed action role-playing game, with elements of the hack and slash and "dungeon roaming" genres. It was released for Windows and Mac OS in 2000 by Blizzard Entertainment, and was developed by Blizzard North. It is the sequel to the 1996 hit PC game, Diablo. Diablo II was one of the most popular games of 2000. Major factors that contributed to Diablo II's success include its addictive gameplay and access to the free online play service, Battle.net. The game was conceptualized and designed by David Brevik and Erich Schaefer, who with Max Schaefer acted as Project Leads on the game. The main production roles were handled by Matthew Householder and Bill Roper. An expansion to Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, was released in 2001, and is currently at version 1.13c. The storyline of Diablo II progresses through four acts, with each act following a predetermined path and list of quests. Some quests are optional. The player assumes the role of a hero from one of five different character classes. Players fight monsters through wilderness areas and dungeons in order to level-up their character and gain better items. Combat is in real-time, and shown from an isometric viewpoint. Players also have the option of hiring one of several computer-controlled mercenaries, or hirelings, that follow the player and attack nearby enemies. A powerful boss monster awaits the player at the end of each act. Item drops, monster attributes, and most dungeon layouts are randomly-generated by Diablo II. In addition to the four acts, there are three sequential difficulty levels: Normal, Nightmare, and Hell. On higher difficulties, monsters are stronger, experience is penalized on dying, and the player's resistances are handicapped. A character retains all abilities and items between difficulties, and may return to a lower difficulty at any time. Players can also create a hardcore character. In softcore, the player can resurrect their character if killed and resume playing, while a hardcore character has only one life. If killed, the character is permanently dead and unplayable, and all items and equipment on that character will be lost unless another friendly character has the "loot" icon checked. Amazon The Amazon hails from the islands of the Twin Seas, near the border of the Great Ocean. The class is based on the Amazons of Greek mythology. She is similar to the Rogue of Diablo: both primarily use bows, and both make equal use of strength and magic. The Amazon can also use javelins and spears. Many of her passive skills are defensive in nature, especially Dodge, Avoid, and Evade. The Amazon is voiced by Jessica Straus. Necromancer The Necromancer is a versatile death-themed spell caster. Necromancers are the priests of the Cult of Rathma from the Eastern jungles. His Summoning skills allow him to raise skeletons, create golems, and resurrect dead monsters to fight alongside him. The Necromancer possesses powerful poison spells, which rapidly drain life from afflicted monsters. He also has "Bone" skills, which directly damage enemies, while bypassing most resistances. His Curses also afflict the enemy with debilitating status ailments, sowing confusion and chaos in their ranks. The Necromancer is voiced by Michael McConnohie. Barbarian The Barbarian is a powerful melee fighter from the steppes of Mount Arreat. He is an expert at frontline combat, able to absorb great punishment, and is the only class capable of dual-wielding weapons. His Combat Masteries allow him to specialize in different types of weapons, and also passively increase his resistance, speed, and defense. His Warcries dramatically increase the combat effectiveness of him and his party, as well as afflicting status ailments on enemies. He has a variety of Combat Skills at his command, most of which focus on delivering great force upon a single foe. The Barbarian is voiced by David Thomas. Sorceress The Sorceress hails from a rebellious coven of female witches who have wrested the secrets of magic use from the male-dominated mage clans of the East. She can cast ice, lightning and fire spells. Nearly all of these skills are offensive in nature, besieging the enemy with elemental calamity. Her Cold Skills can freeze enemies solid and bypass resistances, but do less damage than lightning or fire. The Sorceress's Teleport spell allows her to instantly travel to a new destination, making her very difficult to hit. The strong point of the Sorceress is her damaging spells and casting speed; her weakness is her relatively low hit points and defense. The Sorceress is voiced by Liana Young. Paladin The Paladin is a crusader from the Church of Zakarum, fighting for the glory of the Light. To reflect this, the zealous Paladin's combat skills range from fanatical attacks to heavenly thunderbolts. His skills are split into Combat Skills, Defensive Auras, and Offensive Auras. His auras have a range of abilities, such as increasing damage, or resisting magic attacks, or boosting defense. The Paladin's auras affect all party members, making him one of the best characters for multiplayer. The Paladin is highly proficient in the use of a shield, and is the only character that can use it as a weapon. The Paladin also has specialized skills for eliminating the undead. Druid The Druids who inhabit the northern forests of Scosglen developed their magic independently from the eastern mage clans. They served as the warrior-kings of their tribes, usually living apart from their people in massive stone towers that were covered with vines and ivy. As masters of the natural world, they were able to control living creatures and the very forces of nature. Assassin The Order of Mage Slayers was formed after the Vizjerei survived the tragedy brought on by Bartuc and Horazon. Their purpose was to watch for rogue magi that may become corrupted by the forces of Evil. To be effective at this task they were trained in abilities that were not conducive to Demonic corruption. Living as rumour and myth to the general population, even other magi knew very little about this mysterious order. Their reputation was shrouded in mystery and the simple fear of their retribution almost ensured steadfast vigilance against corruption amongst those who knew they were real. Assassins do not employ the magical arts directly; rather, they use enchanted items that mimic elemental powers and can be used autonomously. To further avoid potential corruption, they focus on the natural abilities of the mortal body - powers of the mind and unarmed combat. It was announced on June 28, 2008, at the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France. The game takes place in Sanctuary, the dark fantasy world of the Diablo series. This world was saved twenty years prior by a handful of unnamed heroes in Diablo II. Warriors that survived the onslaught of the armies of the Burning Hells have gone mad from their ordeals and it is up to a new generation of heroes to face the forces of evil threatening the world of Sanctuary. Players will have the opportunity to explore familiar settings such as Tristram. The only confirmed NPC is Deckard Cain, who has appeared in both of the previous games. Cain's journal on the official site brings the player up to speed on the events of the first two games. Diablo's world map is composed primarily of two main continents with several small islands in the Northwest region. gameplay Diablo III is similar in style to its predecessor, Diablo II. The proprietary engine will incorporate Havok physics and feature destructible environments with an in-game damage effect. The developers are aiming to make the game run on a wide range of systems, and have stated that DirectX 10 will not be required. Diablo III will use a custom 3D game engine in order to present an overhead view to the player, in a somewhat similar way to the isometric view used in previous games in the series. Enemies will utilize the 3D environment as well, in ways such as crawling up the side of a wall from the depths into the combat area. Every creature model will have around 35 unique death animations. As in Diablo II, multiplayer games will be possible using Blizzard's Battle.net service, with many of the new features being developed for StarCraft II also available in Diablo III. Players will be able to drop in and out of sessions of co-operative play with others. An enhanced quest system, a random level generator, and a random encounter generator are slated for use in order to ensure the game provides different experiences when replayed.[2] Overall, the game will include both static and randomly generated levels.[11] Additionally, there will be class-specific quests to go along with the main storyline quests.[12] Blizzard originally planned to have in-game cutscenes,[13] but decided these would divert from the gameplay and decided against them. Two new armor pieces will be available: shoulder plates and leggings.[9] Unlike previous iterations, gold can be picked up merely by touching it, rather than having to manually pick it up.[13] Sidekicks, unlike Diablo II, are now distinct NPCs who join the player, rather than randomly-generated and endlessly replaceable hires.[13] One of the new features intended to speed gameplay is that health orbs drop from enemies, replacing the need to have a potion bar, which itself is replaced by a skill bar that allows a player to assign quick bar buttons to skills and spells; previously, players could only assign two skills (one for each mouse button) and had to swap skills with the function keys. Players can still assign specific attacks to mouse buttons.[13] Skill Runes, another new feature, are skill-modifying items that are randomly dropped by monsters and used across all classes. Similar to runes in Diablo II but instead of changing equippable items, they can be attached to skills as though they are items, often completely changing the gameplay of each skill.[14] They also have the ability to make one particular spell in each class more powerful, and give the player options as to how the rune will enhance a particular spell. For example, investing Skill Runes on the Wizard's "Lightning" can allow the players to make the lightning jump towards additional enemies, or, alternatively, adding the runes with explosion effect blows the enemy up and causes damage to the surrounding area. characters Witch Doctor The Witch Doctor will be a new class. They can summon undead monsters, but without the need of dead bodies like the Necromancer. They appear to be a mixture of the Necromancer, the Druid and an alchemist, with some skills also reminiscent of the Warlock from World of Warcraft, such as Terrify and Mass Confusion. While these are old Necromancer skills, they seem to be a bit more potent now. Barbarian The Barbarian is a melee-oriented class with great physical powers, and uses fury instead of mana as a resource pool. Wizard The Wizard is a pure spellcaster, harnessing arcane and elemental magic to do his/her bidding via a devastating array of offensive spells. The Wizard is quite similar to the Sorcerer and Sorceress of previous Diablo games, in design and concept. One key change in Diablo 3 is that the Wizard does not use mana, but has a new resource called instability, a change that has profound gameplay implications. Details about how Instability will function have not yet (March, 2010) been revealed. Monk [img_thumb]http://www.diablowiki.net/images/thumb/9/94/Monk_concept1.jpg/304px-Monk_concept1.jpg[/img_thumb] The Monk is one of the five playable characters in Diablo 3. He was the fourth to be revealed, at Blizzcon 2009, and plays as a melee/caster hybrid, with a martial arts/kung fu type theme to most of his attacks. His appearance is reminiscent of a European monk, while his saffron robed garments, religion, and combat style draw more from the Eastern, Shao Lin style influence. Though only eight of the Monk skills have yet been revealed, the character design calls for numerous fast-hitting, arcade-style chain combo attacks, a variety of defensive active and passive skills, and various unknown types of party-boosting Auras. The character feels similar to the Assassin and Paladin from Diablo II, and while he shares a name and some traits with the Monk from Hellfire, Blizzard has disowned that expansion pack and claims no connection between the characters. Fun fact: Diablo was meant to be a turn based game.
This game is so fucking addicting.
Great OP, Diablo II is a gem in the gameing industry that still is great today. Can't fucking wait for Diablo III. You should have a (at least) rough Diablo III section, but i guess you might be lacking cool character class gifs or something like that, so i guess it can wait.
Very nice. I loved this game since it came out. When Diablo 2 Expansion came out, I nearly fainted. This game is one of the best games to last through time, and I love playing it whenever I find the disks.
Just gave the banners a little more transparency, use them if you like! :)
This game is so fucking badass it's just unreal
Fun fact: Diablo was meant to be a turn based game.
Well thank god it wasn't because if it was another Fallout I wouldn't enjoy it at all. The way it is makes it one of my top RPGs ever.
I wish I knew where my Diablo 1 CD is. I have Hellfire sitting around being useless.
The Battlechest never even came with Hellfire. :(
I have to say I loved the coop of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction especially with loads of people but the cheating then having duals was also pretty fun. The disc exploded in the drive, so that was the end of that.
I've got a copy at home with LoD, and i've been playing quite a bit over the summer. In previous playthroughs, I played as Necromancer most of the time, since I like having minions to kill off enemies and distract them whilst I use other spells. This time I rolled Druid, and not too much has changed, though it's still a fresh experience with the Icethrower spell and my pack of Dire Wolves. Regardless, I still keep my good ol' Rogue hireling at my side, since I like having a good ranged minion to work with, and though the Ravens are a powerful murder, they just don't have the same feel of the Skeletal Mages I used to command... Managed to reach Diablo in the Chaos Sanctuary again, and I think i'm gonna need a few more levels/spell upgrades/Full Rejuvenation potions before I can beat him this time around... His Red Lightning Hose is a KILLER if you're not fast enough. I guess when Diablo 3 comes out, i'll be rolling Witch Doctor, since they've allegedly got a good minion spell or two (Zombie Dawgs).
WHEN WILL D3 COME OUT I want to come when it does
It's coming out sometime next year. As for Diablo II, I convinced my friends to play it. We had a full party and it was probably the most fun I've had in a video game ever. Everything from the gameplay to the hilarious conversations we had over Skype was amazing.
I always loved the Marius cutscenes in DII.
I loved Diablo and still do, but multiplayer nowadays is just full of bots, hackers, griefers and cheaters. I want Diablo 3 :frown: [editline]05:38AM[/editline] Oh and the fact that blizzard randomly banned all my characters and pretty much just said "fuck you" years ago kinda put me off to playing it for like forever.
I don't know why you wouldn't have, but just in case you have not, (and you might want to ad this to the OP) 20:00 min. Debut Gameplay of Diablo III http://www.gametrailers.com/video/debut-gameplay-diablo-iii/35674 [editline]01:00AM[/editline] Some, if not most of the things in that video are outdated, Like the HUD, so don't get accustomed to whats in that video.
I used to be a whirlwind barbarian, then I switched to an Auradin, now I am mostly a trapassin.
My dad bought Diablo a long ass time ago.
I saw Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction on sale a few days ago, do people still play?
I still occasionally play Diablo II: Lord of Destruction to this day, approximately nine years after I bought it, it's a jewel and a classic of video gaming, all platforms considered.
I played Diablo II a little bit, I've got a friend who's been playing it since it came out. Diablo III looks really awesome, though.
OP you should add some D3 info! :)
I must have played over 1000 hours of D2, I have never played a game this much (I still play it sometimes, though nowhere near the 5-8 hours a day of when it was released).
I saw Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction on sale a few days ago, do people still play?
Oh yeah, it's constantly populated on most realms. Also, Diablo III section up.
I guess I'm the only one that thinks Diablo is a hugely overrated series then.
