Whether it be the support class, the damage soaking tank, the quick and sneaky precision striker, or any other variation, what do you do when you are in a team?
I, personally, go for the "medic" role. Considering that the majority of my teammates are as intelligent as rotten herring sandwiches, I feel like it's my duty to keep them alive to attract the enemy's attention another day.
I switch equally, or whatever is least played on my team to balance it out.
I play whatever role is needed. Support, defense, offense, whatever. I learn all the roles, but I also work with other roles better after I've played them and learned how hard/easy their roles are.

huehuehuehue, everyone else is stupid except for me
I'm that faggot who sits in the back and heals you assholes.
Then I build a fort
I'm the one that runs in and either, distracts, goes on a suicide mission and goes out guns blazing, or the person that goes in and takes cover and tells his teammates the situation.

What, you don't play on public servers?
Support (Non-medic) or Indirect Fire Class (Sniper or otherwise)
whichever is needed
I pull agro
/ffxi
I do whatever is needed unless it's an MMO then just damage since I sometimes panic as a healer/ tank trying to keep the entire group alive

It seems ridiculous, but it really does seem impossible to play on some teams due to the huge number of bad players. Don't tell me this isn't true. Play public matches on popular games without a friend with you, and you'll quickly see, if you're just an above average player then you are often being held back by a terrible team.
Also, I generally play the role of "lone wolf" or support in most shooter type games, and in RPG/MMO's I'm generally a tank or healer.
Support. If the team needs a medic, I'm a medic. If we need to take out a tank I've got the rocket launcher. If we're being overwhelmed I'll add another gun to our force. I'm not great at direct fighting, but I'm pretty good at support and flanking.
I sit in a corner contributing nothing/stand on the balcony of my favorite 24/7 instant respawn spoofed player count TF2 server and pull off crazy bodyshots.
Just kidding, I enjoy going support, or, if we have tons, whatever we need.
i'm the medic. saving people's lives so give me a little credit.
Sometimes I'll just play that one weird guy, then make a huge turn around near the end.
Either tank or healer.
I'll play any role that builds/hacks/welds doors/barricades/upgrades/etc.
I like to get shit done that the offensive roles couldn't care for.
The fastest one, for example, Interceptor on EVE Online, Scout on TF2, or whatever.
Either that or some kind of engineer.
I'm the carry, I make the rules.
I find the big gun and fuck shit up.
I'm usually support, helping the team in whatever way needed, i.e, medic, sniper, scout/saboteur.
Healer or support. I love the Ritualist on Guild Wars.
I usually go for medic in BF2, etc.
Otherwise I just float around assault/support
Usually medic. However in some games that don't give points for healing, I'll go offense.
I always go for support classes, there's enough morons who can't work as a team that needs health/ammo/backup.

Why am I always staring at your avatar. I don't get a boner, I just stare at it. Just stare. And stare. For NO REASON
Support.
If there is a spy/stealth option that is usually my expertise and what I find the most fun. Otherwise stuff like being a medic/buff/sometimes sniper (I.E. I feel comfortable sniping in Americas Army but absolutely suck at sniping in TF2).
Usually the one that causes damage.
An equal mix of sniper or rusher.
In the case of Far Cry 2, I was always a sniper.
Assault or anti-tank. I loved shooting buggies full of guys in BF2 and getting a bunch of kills from one rocket.
