About the series
Game series originally started by germany based developer Piranha Byte and was produced by an assortment of different companies at first, until finally landing on JoWood as their primary developer for the next 2 installments, Gothic 2 and 3, and finally splitting, leading to a different developer to work on Gothic 4, releasing this year. The series is all about choosing your own adventure by taking different paths along with various quests allowing multiple solutions, with wide exploration and realism thrown in. For instance, do you want to pay for a runeblade? Find a runeblade? Or possibly even craft your runeblade? Well, you can do all those things and more! With the freedom to interact with AI that has it's own set schedules to go about for day and night. You can be an alchemist, a hunter, a thief, a smithy, a magician, or hell, why not all those things! Gothic is your adventure to start and craft to your liking from the very beggining.

About the Game
Your an unnamed prisoner thrown into a penal colony protected by a magic barrier, who is also given a letter specificaly for the Fire Mages who are also trapped within the barriers walls. Your first few moments in this new land are less than friendly until you meet a man named Diego who instructs to you about the basics of this place you have been cast into. There are 3 camps, each with their own missions, governing rules, armor, classes, preferred skills, and backgrounds, and you are free to join any one of them at any time. Gothic uses it's own in-house developed engine which took more then 4 years to create.

About the Game
Playing as the same hero in the same world, only this time, you have been brought back from the brink of death, and the barrier has fallen, but now a new evil lurks within the shadows of your humble province. You must now seek a holy relic from the Paladins so you can combat this great evil and save your world once more. There are once again, 3 factions for you to join, each path being unique in it's own right, but this time, game world is twice as big as before, with more weapons, armor types, monsters, and more unique NPC's. No barrier can hold you back now! (And if you get the Night of the Raven expansion, it further adds more land, monsters, NPC's, and seemingly useless locations from Gothic 2's original land into part of the expansions story, as well as making the game overall more challenging)

About the Game
After returning by boat to your homeland you find that the country is in turmoil against the orcs, they have overrun your cities and are now allied with mercenaries while the rest of humanity has been enslaved while the last remaining human city stands, now under a new barrier for protection. Amidst all this chaos you discover Xardas is somehow involved in all this and it's up to you once more to figure this out. Instead of joining different factions now, you have a reputation for each faction, that goes up and down depending on what you do or don't do for each one, with more of a political focus now since you can choose to liberate settlements and castles from the orcs hold through various means and allying yourself with rebels, or perhaps joining the orcs and rooting out all the remaining rebels. Once again, the world is in your hands, and it's bigger then ever!

About the Game
Although now under the wing of a different developer, this seems to be JoWoods biggest project yet, proudly displaying this as the next installment to the Gothic Franchise, and hoping that it may just be as good or even better than the rest of the entries to the series. Its been 10 years since the ending of Gothic 3, and your now a new adventurer, but you will possibly meet old acquaintances and shape the future for this ancient land that is now "embroiled" in war and conflict.

JoWooD produces some of the most interesting games, shame that their running into trouble.
JoWooD produces some of the most interesting games, shame that their running into trouble.
With any luck, this new entry should both breathe some life into the PC scene and help JoWood carry on. I'll try to reserve a copy in time if i get enough money or at the very least, buy it as soon as it comes out.
Arcania looks good. I wonder if the PC version will be easily modded.

I never really noticed a modding community, besides the patches they often release. I can't say i wouldn't be surprised if it was.
I've played gothic 1 in the past, and the game pisses me off because the game was confusing, until I got the controls memorized and have to remember to save (from gothic 1 and 3, there is no damn autosave), This game is hard until you get the hold on learning how to block/parry more effectively on combat.
From the first time that I heard about this was from a review of Gothic 2 in Xplay back then, I didn't really care until I see Gothic 1 in the abandonware section at Home of the Underdogs. You still got to buy it btw, it's not for free yet.

Posted a link to mods on the bottom of first post.

If you install the latest community patches it fixes nearly all of what made Gothic 3 "buggy" and "unbalanced", including amazing new optimization.
i try playing gothic 1 but... i don't like it anymore, too many problems, It freezes up when you alt-tab out. It's too old and hard to play to me. I like gothic 3 if only they got an auto save system.
I playede Risen, they say that it's basically gothic. Is it true? I liked risen but the quests were just stupid, and took very, very long time to finish.
Gothic II was the bomb. I think I slept with a prostitute once.
I always thought Gothic was scarier than other RPG games.
Gothic 2 with NotR was one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
Shame that Gothic 3 was a massive disappointment.
Gothic 4 better be fucking optimized god damn.
Anyone know how to fix Gothic II? I'm on Windows 7 64bit with an nVidia graphics card.
A lot of people get this, no idea how to fix it.
I can't stand Gothic II, and when ever I try to play Gothic 3, it doesn't allow me to make a new game (see http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=852524 for more information)
Bought Gothic II during the summer sale, haven't actually played it yet.
I remember trying a demo or something ages ago and the controls were a bit wonky... played like it was meant to play with a game pad or something.
i tried Gothic 1, 3 and risen. I like Risen as it's like a Gothic (it is made by the same people who made gothic 1 and 2). The storyline was pretty interesting and it was more of a mage/inquistion vs the Bandits stuff instead of the 3 camp in gothic 1.
Gothic I and II is on gog.com for 10 bucks each. Is it worth getting it?
(I played risen and I liked it, only thing I hated was the time each quest required.)
Which one to get first?
[editline]06:15PM[/editline]
Also, I hear that Gothic 2 tends to not work on Win7. Mine is not 64 bit thoug, vista 64 was not compatible with dungeon keeper 2 but My Win7 is.

I've been able to play all the gothics on my 32bit Vista system, the only trouble you will most likely encounter is if you have a 64bit Win7 OS, not sure about 32bit, some people say they've been able to run it with that on Win7. If you have vista i wouldn't worry about it.
I would say gothic 1 and 2 for 10 bucks is a great deal, especially if gothic 2 is gold version, which alone is worth 10$ practicaly.
EDIT
I found this fix on a website, hopefully it works:
"I had lot of problems with Gothic 2 in Win7 (x86), but finally get it working perfectly. No need to run it as admistrator or in compatibility mode.
Here's what I did:
Required steps:
1. Installed Game (Gold == Original + NoTR) all 4 CDs.
2. Installed gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev1.exe.
3. Installed gothic2_vdfs-patch.exe.
4. Installed Community Patch v1.0a (fixes Widescreen and lot of bugs!)
5. Disabled video scaling because my videos only had audio! (system/gothic2.ini):
scaleVideos=0"
I playede Risen, they say that it's basically gothic. Is it true? I liked risen but the quests were just stupid, and took very, very long time to finish.
Yea, it is true, that fact that your on an island, the major city has been seized by higher authority, the theme, story, and almost everything about it are similar to each other. Hell, even the Ogre's in Risen are practicaly exact replica's of the Ogre's from Gothic 3.
But, Risen is still a fantastic game on it's own with a rich world filled with small intricate details covering the entire island. Some fans tend to think of Risen as a soul sequel to the Gothic franchise and even make remarks of it being the REAL gothic 4 compared to this new one thats being developed.
I like Risen better then the gothic games because IT GOT A MOTHERFUCKIN AUTOSAVE! I've try to keep my patience when playing gothic 1 but failed as I continue to have crashes, even with the god damn texture pack and the community patch as well. Fuck it, Gothic 1 sucks because it has no auto-save and it's the crash-y game.
Gothic 3 was definitely my favorite game. The best thing I can say for these games is the world design, it honestly puts all other games to shame. Sure some other games might have huge worlds with high quality textures but the design itself is never as good. Too much copy paste with not enough variance and altitude change.
Risen was also fantastic, it felt exactly like all the gothic games but had a fresh storyline.
Well since risen is a bit related, I just re-installed and I am stuck!
I wrote on the official forums but I'll post it here.
Hi.
I'm in chapter one, and I cannot finish the power struggle quest.
I have collected the money for Borgar, and told Rachel about it, so, I went to borgar and said that I should talk to the Don about it. After this, I can't talk to rachel! Also I cannot challange him in the arena. I can't kill him off, because the entire camp would be after me. I need help!
I have done the gold sword quest, I stole it from borgar. I finished the arena, up till domingo, and I can't arrange a fight with Borgar.
Well never mind, Just killed the bastard on the scene, and then ran away for a day :v:

I remember I would play with the patch on my old comp, but i would have to keep the graphics down and it would work. Now, after i bought a new comp, without the patch, it didn't even start up, with it, it runs at about 2fps, even with low graphics, so i just have to hope a new version come out fixing this.

When you say it crashes alot, when do you mean it crashes? Also, if you try running it from STEAM it will crash (gothic 1).
