• Portal 2 Ending - Hidden Code

When the credits roll for Portal 2, there is a graphic in the upper right corner of the screen. One part contains three static numbers: 2.67 1002 45.6 The other part is a window with scrolling dots. There are two columns, one scrolling up and the other scrolling down, each comprised of 6 inner columns. ValveARG wiki user Beuja posted on the forums about the same thing with the following representation of the data:
11 111 1111 11 111 1 111 111 1 11 111 1111 11 111 1 11 1 11 11 11 111 11 11 111 111 1 1 11 11 11 111 11 11 1 11 1 11 11 11 1111 1 11 111 1 111 11 1 11 11 11 1111 1 11 11 1 11 1 1 11 1111 1 1 11 111111 111 11 11 1 1 11 1111 1 1 11 11 1111 11 1 11 11 11111 1111 11 1111 11 1 11 11 1111 11 11111 11 11 1 1 1 1111 1 1 11111 11111 11 11 1 1 1 111 . . . .
(thread here: http://valvearg.com/forums/topic/53-portal-2-ending-hidden-message/) My first thought was that it could be morse code, but all of the dots are of the same size, although they are grouped together in groups of 1 to 6. I copied a separate set of data that tracks the density and came up with this: DOWN Col 1: 1 1 4 1 1 1 2 2 5 5 Col 2: 5 2 2 1 2 4 2 4 Col 3: 6 2 1 1 1 3 2 1 1 2 2 3 Col 4: 1 3 2 1 1 3 2 2 2 1 2 3 Col 5: 3 2 2 3 2 2 2 1 1 3 Col 6: 3 1 3 2 4 3 2 1 3 UP Col 1: 1 1 5 5 2 2 1 1 1 4 Col 2: 4 2 4 2 1 2 2 5 Col 3: 6 3 2 2 1 1 2 4 1 1 2 Col 4: 1 3 2 1 2 2 2 4 1 2 3 Col 5: 3 1 1 2 2 2 3 2 2 3 Col 6: 3 1 2 3 4 2 3 1 3 In doing that, I was logging each cluster as it touched either the bottom or top of the window. I've been trying to come up with some way to begin decoding this (if there is in fact anything to decode) but I'm pretty new to this and haven't been able to make any headway. This all could be nothing but, as Beuja mentioned on the thread linked above, considering the recent ARG this seems like too much of a coincidence to be nothing. On the three numbers I mentioned first, I did a search and came up with multiple results for a Miami real estate listing, but I do think that one is coincidence. Maybe those numbers are some hint on how to decode the rest?
OR it's possible you're looking into this too much.
if its another arg i will be quite flustered
I thought the scrolling dots was like one of those things that play music automatically, (I've seen them on pianos) I don't know how to describe them, or what they're called.

Maybe its in a cipher and every number of spaces is a certain letter? Like _ _ (2 spaces) would be like letter B of the alphabet?
Oh god not again
I'm not sure if this has to do with anything but if you pause the game during the song they'll still be scrolling.
The only reason it does that is because the background is a .bik, and you can't pause .biks in-game, attempt pausing during the [sp]space and turret opera[/sp] cinematic.

If you're tired of deciphering from the ARG, fine. Don't. I'm putting this out there because I noticed it and thought maybe it's something. I don't deny that it may be nothing. Go whine in another thread.
It's just random numbers to make the monitor look more sciency.
Punched tape, anyone? Although they most commonly had 5 or 8 bits, not 6...
when i first saw them in the game i thought they were words, not in a code but literly spelled out words
when i first saw them in the game i thought they were words, not in a code but literly spelled out words
I had the same thought, but I've had a hard time making anything like that out. [editline]24th April 2011[/editline] Punch tape emulator here: http://www.kloth.net/services/ttypunch.php It's sorta backwards compared to what we need, though. Maybe useful for punching in arbitrary text and seeing if any patterns show up. This could be a stretch (like this whole idea is anyway) but punch code seems like the sort of thing Aperture might have used in Cave Johnson's era, so it could be a legit theory.
Punched tape, anyone? Code is repeating itself starting from two lines to left of the second group of dots. Dunno if it means something.
What about the final transmission and that one that plays in commentary mode when you go into the cup room?
Does it ever stop?
For easy reference, here is a youtube video of the credits (may have some spoilers if you haven't finished the game) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVVZaZ8yO6o
To me it looks like the numbers spell out something.
its probably nothing just leave it in the corner and i will deal with it later really though its just to make it look more computer like
HL3 is coming out in 5 years so I don't care until then.
HL3 is coming out in 5 years so I don't care until then.
don't you mean half life 2: episode 3: episode 1
don't you mean half life 2: episode 3: episode 1
More recently articles and valve themselves have been referring to it as HL3, and in the Final Hours article about Portal 2 Gabe said that something huge was coming in 5 years that would change everything.
More recently articles and valve themselves have been referring to it as HL3, and in the Final Hours article about Portal 2 Gabe said that something huge was coming in 5 years that would change everything.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he said within 5 years.
Okay, maybe not punch tape, but what about punch cards? Like for computer programming? They have 12 columns, like the scrolling window. And then there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture_card Any geezers here know how to interpret IBM style cards?
The only reason it does that is because the background is a .bik, and you can't pause .biks in-game, attempt pausing during the [sp]space and turret opera[/sp] cinematic.
What is also interesting is that you can open the pause menu during the co-op loading screen.
Aperture card. :v:
More recently articles and valve themselves have been referring to it as HL3, and in the Final Hours article about Portal 2 Gabe said that something huge was coming in 5 years that would change everything.
Where did you hear that? Or do you have the app?
What is also interesting is that you can open the pause menu during the co-op loading screen.
That's Valve's pathetic attempt to create an illusion of no loading screens. Really what happens is each time you switch maps, you load this tiny black box that contains nothing but you for a map, and THEN load the real map.
