On Quakecon John Carmack himself had a surprise for everyone, And so he announces Rage for the iPhone 4 At 60 frames per second, The engine will be the same engine as used for the consoles and PC, the id Tech 5, To simply say this, this looks amazing. The video shows some cam of the announcement and gameplay. The game is played on the iPhone 4 and will also come for the iPad and iPod touch.
Check out the video! (High Quality)
(Low quality)
Note:
The iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPad will run this game on max settings and 60 FPS
The older iPhones and iPod touch 1G-2G-3G will run this with lower settings and slightly lower FPS.
(With settings i mean textures, anti-aliasing etc etc )
So, are you suggesting that the iPhone 4 is just as powerful as a gaming PC or a console?
lol no.
[editline]derp[/editline]
also the video link doesn't work.
Looked incredible, better than games on Wii.

I am not saying anything and the link is working.
"Max settings" is rather relative. Of course it's max settings for the iPhone. If it looked like that on PC I'd laugh.
Also, no dynamic lighting, indoors only, extremely simple animations, very simple level geometry, and PS1 level character detail. It'll probably eat away your battery in 30 minutes anyway.
[editline]02:53PM[/editline]
Hardly gameplay, either. He moved around, there was no fancy effects and explosions on the screen which are a better meter for performance.
Well same engine, yes, but not same game. Still cool.

He demonstrated the engine.
Maybe its not as impressive and awesome as the console.
But its still awesome that they can run this on a iPhone

That's what OP said, why don't you watch the video and listen to what the actual developer says.
[editline]12:32PM[/editline]
unless OP ported the engine to the Iphone 4 that is
id Software are the absolute BEST at making game engines. Without them gaming would be radically different.
For example the Source engine was based on Half-Life's engine which was a heavily modified Quake 2 engine made by id Software.
For Codfags, Call of Duty was based on the idTech 3 engine made for Quake 3 by id Software.
They are gods and deserve more recognition.
The only thing impressive is the FPS and visuals. Although, I believe the lighting is actually just part of the textures. Most likely will be a lame iPhone game
[editline]02:58PM[/editline]
But the engine is REALLY impressive.

Even they had a few flops (Quake 4 wasn't bad-bad but it certainly could've been done better), but I agree that they're responsible for the vast majority of the FPS genre at least.

Or maybe it was because I was talking to the OP
Next up in Iphone!
Dance Safari!
Using the ALL-NEW And TECHNOLOGICALLY MIND-BLASTING ID Tech 5 engine!
Too bad that it sucks playing an FPS on an iPod Touch.
If that's really max settings on the PC, it looks like trash.
if that's max settings on the iPhone, the engine must not be very advanced.
I'm pretty sure the narrator said they used radiosity to bake lightmaps into the world rather than use dynamic lights.

The Tech 5 engine uses both pre-computed radiosity light maps and dynamic light. I'm sure that all lighting on this iPhone 4 demo is pre-computed though.
Everything looks quite static to me (lighting etc).
also you cant really call this a demo. we need View models npc's networking biggerlevels. to compare the framerate with a pc i call the 60fps on max bullshit
PS I wish Sony made there Playstation phone. and kick the overpriced Iphone of the market. (The PSP2 they are working on has better hardware then a xbox 360)

We are saying that the new iD tech is flexible enough to be on the iphone.
Of course it's not on max settings on PC, are you fucking nuts? Anyways, this seems impressive. Well it's more like anybody can make 3d environments like that, it's just that even though it's static lighting, it looks REALLY good. It's like playing Doom 3 and then playing Half life 2 and complaining how they're no dynamic shadows even though Half Life 2 looks much more better visually with the static baked lighting even if it didn't have the dynamic shadows.

Spare me the fucking map, but you don't seem to appreciate how massively, ridiculously different GoldSrc and Source are. id are by no means "gods" and have shat out a reasonable selection of poor games. (Quake 3 Arena anyone?)

Source. (If a handheld features a 3-core 3.2 ghz PowerPC processor I'll be laughing)
It makes me laugh when devs think the iphone is a viable gaming platform.

It's John Carmack, one of the greatest game/technology developers of our time. I doubt he thinks he's gonna be bringing in a shit load of money with this, or even think it's gonna be introduced into a large audience.

Yeah! Three amazingly revolutionizing FPS franchises and 5 engines used in basically every popular game for the past decade.
John Carmack TOTALY doesn't deserve the respect he gets.
