Second Life is viewed on Facepunch as something of a joke.
When I ask why this is, I typically get these responses.
1. Furries.
2. Fetish Culture.
3. Furries.
4. Relatively poor graphics, lag.
5. Furries.
Granted, there's a lot of that going on in Second Life.
A huge furry community, and it is a popular medium for people with more 'exotic' fetishes to act out their fantasies. But those aspects of Second Life are only likely to be encountered if one goes looking for them.
I still find it strange that Facepunchers dislike Second Life.
Facepunch is a community built primarily around one of the best sandbox games I've ever seen, Garry's mod. While it's possible to take screenshots of an amazing detail and resolution there, the Source engine does impose some irritating limitations. User-created content exists, but has to be preloaded into the program and is the sole domain of those who can model, script, and texture.
Second Life is a world built entirely around user created content. And while this does draw some undesirable people as a result, there are great communities for those who enjoy building and scripting, and there is some truly amazing user content on the grid.
For the Maya/3DS MAX-challenged, one can use simple primitives - cubes, spheres, toruses, cones, cylinders, pyramids, etc - to make great-looking items. Here's a vest I myself made in 2008:

That's about the extent of my skill. But some people can import 3D models created outside Second Life - and the things they make are amazing. A friend of mine, who goes by the alias April Heaney, made these:
AH-64D Apache Longbow

XM109 25mm Antimateriel Rifle

And tons of other great shit.
In addition, there are some truly beautiful locales. People do crazy stuff when they have enough time on their hands.

AND MOTHERFUCKING DARGONS

So come and join me. I've been using it since '07, on and off again, and I always seem to come back - it's the best sandbox ever, and addictive as all hell. I'm always looking for more people to fly/explore/chill with.

ITT: Dumb raters either have never used SL, or haven't logged in since 2007
It plays like shit, it's too laggy and it's too glitchy.
I love this game, especially scripting and modeling. I was so proud when I made a working clock.
A lot of people get lost in that game though, it becomes their only life. They own houses, throw parties, get married, have children. It's disturbing.
Ho shit I played this in like 2005, I had some fun exploring on it, just finding random people's houses and shit
Looks pretty cool. How does the game work? MMO or player-funded dedicated servers?
I used to play a lot on the 'private' server thing. I liked it because I didn't have to pay for land. I just hosted my own grid space and built on it. I didn't like the inability to do that in regular Second Life. Also, the world is so fucking big it's hard to navigate.
Theres a thread in the MMO section you know

You can get guns? Also looks more like ARMA from some of those screenshots - is there actually anything like that?

The closest thing you'll get is a buggy, laggy combat "sim" full of elitists.
This "game" in a nutshell

"ralph pls go"
"no"
Looks pretty cool.
Too bad I bet a lot of people use their artistic talent to make virtual penises.

Actually, the guns and vehicles I described are generally acclaimed as the best of their kind in Second Life - they function as realistically as possible, and that helicopter has the most realistic flight script of any aircraft in SL. Their creator was inspired by ArmA 2, she tells me.

It's like an MMO - but almost all gameplay elements are user-created, so it can be absolutely anything.
The one problem I have with second life, is not any of the things you said. It's that if you want anything good, you have to pay, with your money. If you want a permanent spot for you to 'express' yourself, you need money. It's near impossible to make money, without spending your real money. That's what turns me off of this game.

Well, that IS a problem for some. But most people in SL make money by making and selling things. For example, see that vest at the top of the thread? I've sold over 250 of those, each for 400L.

What's with the dumb ratings?

Alright, You see, everyone says "Make and sell things", well. I have tried. I made some things, and no one bought it. I got tired of going around saying "I'm selling <name of my product here>, anyone want some?" and no one replied. It's not like I can just stick my shit into a store and let them buy it themselves, because that would require land, and money. I guess it's because I suck at both modeling and scripting to make anything 'useful'.
Off-Topic: Wow 999 posts. You can tell I lurk when I'm from 08 and just about to hit 1000 posts.

You can actually host products on the online Second Life marketplace for free :P Also, you can make money by getting hired by store owners as part-time sales/support staff - that's another thing I've been doing.
Furthermore, there are some truly amazing freebies floating around Second Life these days - there's a lot to enjoy even if you don't have money.
The game had a horrible fanbase, disturbing restrictions on certain maps (no I am not going to pay 20 bucks to fly around my hometown in virtual form) a horrible server selection system and shitty LUA error between servers.
I remember first starting, I got a diving suit and a shotgun from a "free gun shop" then I went to this big abandoned robot museum, got a free r2-d2 and went to a mall, where I glided around in civilian pose with the shotgun in hand and there were minigames (idle in this spot for 1 coin every hour!) and a "pleasure room" full of a shitty tables where 2 people can sit and start this butt sex animation that was constantly stutturing and glitching out so it looked like GTA SA's hot coffee mod but with finger puppets and run through an old color projector with a busted spool motor.

You must've seen the shitty end of Second Life. Seen anything like the pictures I posted here?
Second Life is marketed towards people over 25. Land costs more than most younger people can afford. Until recently, people under 18 were not even allowed in the adult game officially.
Most gamers and others log in, see how they get like 20 fps, and leave for good. The main viewer' draw distance is set above 64 metres by default and so things don't rez for people before they quit in disgust.
The main thing you can do without much hassle in sl is stand around and talk to other well dressed people. No action, not fun for the younger crowd, unless they are into lots of social interaction.
The older someone is the more they like sl. By the time the users on this forum are of that age, there will most likely be a replacement that is not built on a game engine that was already shit when it was conceived.

There was a seperate grid for people under 18, actually - but that's now been merged to the main grid, with age verification required to access adult sims, and people under 16 not being allowed onto moderate sims.

The best modeling I saw was a guy with a full fallout 3 enclave armor set waving around a flag sporting furry porn with a giant X over it.

Around 2007-08
I also remember a furry bondage gear set, that seemed rather well modeled.

If you remember your username and password, here are two places for you to search for.
"Olds AFB" and "The Omega Concern".

Sadly the computer that held the credentials died a year or so back. I'll take your word on them being good maps though.
So I just logged back in and notice that my first account had been created on 04/08/2006. I played on the teen grid all the time, made probably over 100 dollars U.S. on land sales back in the day. God I loved it haha. Noticed that my account still had 6001 L$, might try reinvesting it somehow.
