I think it might have something to do with one of the lab props.
The little wheel thing you use in Eli's lab on the machine with the Xen crystal in is named rotato.mdl, so perhaps one of the developers missed out a letter in the model name and it's some kind of inside joke?

I don't say that the texture is not from 2004, I'm saying that this is coincidence. Valve didn't even knew about Narbacular Drop or Portal not to mention GLaDOS potato in Portal 2.
