Check out darkfall/mortal online. Can't change land to much, but both are sandbox with a medieval tone. If you want sandbox in general, EVE is a great space MMO. A Tale in the Desert is a very crafting-oriented game all about Egypt.

Whats with the x3? Anyways, an MMO costs money to run, and generally its a business, so subscription fees just occur. There are exceptions of course, but even freeish MMOs still get money somehow (micro transactions usually).
You could try Lord of the rings online I guess, as its going free soon, though it still has a paying system in place. If you want absolutely free, I gotta say, I got nothing.

Work hard enough and you can pay your subscriptions/game time with In-game Isk in EvE. About 300 Mil a month, Average 10Mil a day and you'll be fine. I managed to do it with enough Isk to spare to Buy and Outfit fully a Drake, Hurricane and Ferox (With Rigs) and a Hulk. That Toon had only 3 Mil Skillpoints

Fallen Earth is like a generic postapocalyptic Hellgate london, except not fun and with a huge whiteknight community who will all set upon you for even mentioning that the game has a single bug.
Oh it's also pretty shit in the gameplay department too.

You could try A Tale in the Desert or Haven and Hearth. ATitD focusing on crafting and H&H focusing on survival.
H&H is free, ATitD isn't. Just an FYI
H&H is alright i sorta like it.
Star Wars Galaxies Pre-CU (SWGEmu) or even the current version of SWG. Darkfall is fun... Mortal sucks in comparison to Darkfall.
