• Conundrum regarding Direct2Drive store
    3 replies, posted
I've posted this in the Mafia II megathread, but it doesn't seem to be getting the desired amount of attention and I dislike looking through there in fear of spoilers, so I thought I would post my queries here instead. To the point: I'm an Australian and I wish to purchase Mafia II. From the Steam Store it costs $80USD for Australians, but Direct2Drive offers still offers it for $50USD and as an added bonus if I use the 'SchoolSucks' coupon I can get it $10 cheaper. Now this is where problems start, and I start questioning this. It should also be noted that I have never used Direct2Drive before because the Steam Store has usually been satisfactory. Right, well unfortunately on Direct2Drive, the Mafia II page states
This product is available for purchase in the United States, Canada, and Mexico only.
which causes problems for me. So these are the questions I would like answered basically: If I used a US proxy, would I be able to purchase it without having to download at undesirable speeds? i.e. after purchasing would I be able to disable the proxy and download the game at my normal speeds? or Because Mafia II is a SteamWorks compulsory game, would I download a smaller file, which I would use to simply add Mafia II to my games list on steam where I can then download from the steam servers at a normal speed? or My brother has purchased Mafia II on steam (and downloaded), so would I be able to purchase Mafia II from Direct2Drive with a proxy, then take his files and avoid downloading the whole game all together (at least for the bulk of it)? Anyone help is greatly appreciated! Also don't let this sound like it's me trying to get Mafia II before the global release date, more that I'm just trying to buy the game digitally for a reasonable price. Also sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.
That's how you spell that word? 1- I'd maybe get a friend in the US to buy it for you, and then send you the game maybe, I've never had luck with any proxies, but that's just my experiences. 2- No clue. 3- I believe you can, but that might be illegal- not sure, also not sure whether or not Steam puts everything into those oddly shaped files that make it so you can only use the game on steam, and on that account. I know little though.

So is there no one else who can give me definite answers to my questions?
If I were you, I'd just get it on Steam. I could help you out if you want, send me $50 USD via PayPal and I'll gift it to you.
