The Steam for Linux Beta client supports the free-to-play game Team Fortress 2. Approximately two dozen additional Steam titles are now also available for play on Linux systems. Additionally, the Steam for Linux Beta client includes Big Picture, the mode of Steam designed for use with a TV and controller, also currently in beta. Within its first week, Valve received over 60,000 responses to its request for participants in the Steam for Linux Beta. The first round of beta participants has been selected from this group of respondents. The Steam for Linux Beta client will become available to a widening group of users over the course of the beta. Subsequent participants will be chosen among survey respondents, and once the team has seen a solid level of stability and performance across a variety of systems, the Steam for Linux client will become available to all users of Steam.
The beta can be downloaded here. You will require a Debian based distro to install it properly; although various solutions have been solved: it's already available in Arch's AUR. http://store.steampowered.com/browse/linux/ doesn't load
http://store.steampowered.com/browse/linux/ doesn't load
It's regionally selective at the moment; it works for some people, not for others. [editline]6th November 2012[/editline] http://store.steampowered.com/search/?os=linux Also seems to work for some and not for others, you might get lucky though.
I installed it and for some reason all I can't get my friends menu to unmaximize off my 3rd screen... [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5601782/Screenshot%20from%202012-11-06%2015%3A10%3A25.png[/t]
If you're not an enrolled beta user you can still play games using the following: To install TF2: steam://install/440 To play TF2: steam://rungameid/440
I'm just getting the 'servers are too busy to handle your request' error after it tries to prepare TF2's files :( Other games like World of Goo are working fine, so I'll play about with those in the meantime
So, how's the performance on valve games with an AMD gpu?
I wish Valve wouldn't be so hard on Windows 8. They could make a really nice app using the metro system.
I wish Valve wouldn't be so hard on Windows 8. They could make a really nice app using the metro system.
This has nothing to do with Steam for Linux. [editline]boop[/editline]
I installed it and for some reason all I can't get my friends menu to unmaximize off my 3rd screen...
Yeah support for multiple monitors is a bit shitty right now.
This has nothing to do with Steam for Linux. "Please don't turn this into a Windows vs Linux thread." [editline]boop[/editline] Yeah support for multiple monitors is a bit shitty right now.
Well in wine when I try to move steam windows around they have an odd chance to explode off the screen and disappear forever until i restart it. Meh
I'm getting a "Wrong architecture i386" when I try to install the package, is it 32bit only? Edit: It's only 32bit...
Keeps crashing on me :S
After 4 freaking years, this is great.
Holy fuck it's already available on the AUR? Damn people are fast. [sup][sup]I am excite.[/sup][/sup] [editline]6th November 2012[/editline]
So, how's the performance on valve games with an AMD gpu?
Going to test it out later, will tell you how it goes.
Use the official logo!
I started using this, its REALLY nice to use a non laggy version of steam on linux. Im getting the "too busy" error when trying to install tf2, so im trying to copy over some GCFs right now. Edit: Nope still not working
Installed it off the Aur, added myself to the video group so opengl worked and I'm in. Though "too busy" for tf2 as well, but maybe I can play cavestory and dredmor when they finished downloading. [editline]6th November 2012[/editline] Cave Story+ gives a "missing executable" error, but Dungeons of Dredmor runs very well. Hopefully tf2 will download eventually.
I managed to Download Amnesia and Serious Sam 3, Amnesia runs well but SS3 gives the "Missing Executable" Error.
I managed to Download Amnesia and Serious Sam 3, Amnesia runs well but SS3 gives the "Missing Executable" Error.
List of working/not working games is in the OP. Snipped to avoid confusion.
hmm for some reason the text isn't displaying for me [t]http://ubuntuone.com/7ITaNwYv6KRNPrahGtXHEf[/t]
That happens to me if it crashes or I kill it when it freezes. Exit cleanly and relaunch, see if it works again.
-snippes- nevermind just installed the ubuntu restricted extras and it works now
I can't seem to get TF2 to download, it always gives me a "Steam servers too busy" message.
Working wonderfully with E17, heh.
I can't seem to get TF2 to download, it always gives me a "Steam servers too busy" message.
Seems a lot of people are having this issue; tried copying the gcfs over from a windows installation?
where do we report bugs? in kubuntu, the mouse cursor is flipped when hovering on steam.
where do we report bugs? in kubuntu, the mouse is flipped when hovering on steam.
Users with official beta access have a bug forum.
Does TF2 run good on this beta?
Any fix for TF2 install always giving "servers are too busy"?
Any fix for TF2 install always giving "servers are too busy"?
You need to actually be in the beta.
I need help installing it onto my Linux Mint 13, I tried the main deb download, it didn't work, some error came up, I forgot what it said. I then tried the link in the browser to download it, which didn't work, firefox can not use those links or something it said, and I lastly tried the Arch download, I do not know how to use Tar.gz's.
