Well, what happened to me is the kind of thing that makes you feel really, really stupid. Basically, I forgot my Steam account password and the secret answer. My Steam account still automatically logs in, though. So, if my PC loses that information somehow, I'm screwed.
I suppose I should start saving money for my games again, in my new Steam account, or is there anything else I can do other than trying to hack my own account?
Use your email
Tell Steam Support to reset your password

This.
I was in the same situation as you once, the guys at Steam Support will reset your password into a random generated code thingy if I'm right you just need to provide a proof a purchase which is the card type, full name, expiration date, and the last four digits of the credit card you last used when buying a Steam game.

you dont even have to do that, just search your email for steam, find an invoice, and paste that into the support ticket.
Use Clientregestry.blob

Wait if you click on the forgot password button does it direct you to the part where you answer your secret question?
No, if OP would actually be bothered to click on it. He would see a page which describes multiple scenarios. One of which applies to his situation:
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR STEAM ACCOUNT NAME:
Select the I don't know my account name. option and click Next.
Select an item of information, preferably the account's contact email address.
Enter the contact email address on record with Steam to have Steam Support email your Steam Account name to this address.
Repeat the initial step in this process and, upon receiving the email message containing your Account name, select the "I know my account name" option. Or, if you didn't receive this email message, Contact Steam Support.
And if that fails
If you are still unable to access the account, please Contact Steam Support.
If you have any Steam game that's boxed (HL2, MW2 etc) you can use its CD-Key on Steam Support for them to reset your pass and secret answer. My friend did this once and it worked for him.

This.
Just take simple pic of your cd key and you're ready to use you are going to get new password in less than a week.

That happened to me, just go to steam support and "ask a question", if you have a cd-key that you used in one of your games, take a picture and show it to them.
I got my account back after 5 days.

I didn't do that, so I suppose I am not an idiot.
I just said that, if, hypothetically, I didn't get my account info back, that's what I would have to do. Mainly because my Google search found stories from other people you'd call "idiots", that tell they didn't get their password back.
I did what the other nice and polite people in this thread told me to do, and got my Steam account info back. You can have fun trolling someone else.
