I've been thinking about this for a while. Games like Grand Turismo or Forza are touted as being the best video game simulations for racing, but none of them truly implement a clutch. I realize it'd make setting up controls a bit more difficult since most controllers only have 2 triggers but I think it'd be doable without having to make a new special controller. My main beef is that every time I pick the manual option for my car in a game, I don't get a manual, I get a flappy-paddle gearbox. I think the current manual option should stay, but it'd be nice to have proper manual controls. It'd be hilarious to be doing an online race that was restricted to true manual early on, because 1/3 of the players would stall trying to take off, the other 1/3 would have slow, methodical launches to prevent stalling, and the remainder would have varying levels of skill. Maybe I'm asking for too much, but all the same I'll be extremely excited when I hear about a racing game that does true clutch simulation.
Because it's just a major PITA on a controller and has little benifit
Most new racing games have that.

Can you name some? I haven't heard of any doing that.

Every NFS after Underground 2, Dirt 1/2, Grid, Toca Racing Driver 3, Colin McRae Rallies, practically all F1 games. Need I name more?
Woo-hoo, I didn't notice I got 2000 posts. So, happy 2005 posts to me!
I would look like a spaz if they did that.
I always have it on Automatic anyway
Even the games that do have clutch control don't actually have stalling or proper low speed behavior.

Forza 3 has clutch
because it's not a clunge simulator
oop misread
Forza 3 has clutch
but it's shitty and doesn't work like a real one at all
Only expensive racing wheels have a separate clutch pedal. If you only had a button for a real clutch, it'd be a pain in the ass to use. Live for Speed has a realistic clutch, but starting is hard when you have no pedal for it.

you shouldn't be able to.
It's not like we're driving Ferrari pick-up trucks.
Besides I always have it on automatic.
Play Live for Speed.
Instant racing boner.

I suppose you've never heard of a company called logitech

The newest Forza has clutch..
Also mainly because to do it on a controller is near impossible, that is if you actually want to win.
you shouldn't be able to.
There's an option to use either a button or a gamepad (wheels/joystick) axis. Most racing wheels only have 3 axises, but it needs all 3 for the steering, brake, and gas.
Button clutch starts are really jerky in Live for Speed.

The clutch in Forza 3 is automatic at low RPMs to keep the player from stalling the engine completely. You still need to use the clutch to get going again after stopping, but your engine doesn't stall at all.
