• Aging and having children.

Ok so you'd have 2 people, and each person would have a face and how the face looks is determined by visual sliders, much like the ones you find in rpg games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Each person would be programmed to age over time, how this would be done is that after X amount of game time has passed (Not real time) the character will have a few of their appearance sliders changed to specifically make them look older, baggier eyes, sagged skin, wrinkles added on to the face. Eventually, after they reach a random age between lets say 70 years and 100 years, they'll die. The age at which the values change will be +/- 10, so some people age better than others, and when two npc's have a child, the exact in between of the mothers "aging value" and the fathers "aging value", will be the child's, so if a father ages well, and a mother ages well, the child will also age well, however if the mother ages well, and the father ages badly, the child will age normally. However when an npc is between the ages of 18 and 35, they'll be coded to have children with a person within X distance of them, usually the distance of the town or city which they're in, who's appearance sliders are within a certain range, this range will be close to theirs, but not exactly the same. For example, lets say there's a visual setting called "Nose size" and their nose size is set to 60, they'll look for some one who has a nose size between 70-65 or 50-55, but never their exact range, it will always vary. After they select an npc to partner with and go through a certain amount of in game time, their child will be born, how the child looks will be determined like so. If one parent has a nose size of 60, and the other has a nose size of 70, the child will have a nose size of 65, +/- a random value between 1-5. The +/- is there so that the child will not always be the exact middle, or else after a long time, everyone would start keeping the same general appearance, because the values wouldn't have a certain amount of randomness. Naming will work like this, the 2 parents will have a 85% chance of getting "married" which will always be done when the player isn't near them, when they get married the female will have her last name changed to the last name of the male npc, and her first name stays the same. There will be a long list of first names, either randomly generated or written by some one, one will be picked out at random for a child when it is born, and applied to it along with its fathers lasted name, however if the first name is already in use by another npc, and the npc is within 20 years of that child's age (0) the name will not be used, and instead another one will be randomly chosen. When an npc is over the age of 20, their name will be usable again. There will also be another list of last names, far shorter than the list of first names, and when a child turns 18, there will be a 0.5% chance of it getting its last name changed to another name on the list, if the last name they choose is already in use by an npc within a set distance of them (Usually the distance of the town/city they live in) the name won't be chosen, and it'll choose another random last name.
Uh what
Uh what
He's talking about adding aging and the effects of having children being added to customization systems. I think.
Interesting, but what do you mean? Is this a concept for a game you're working on or something?
Makes me want to play fable
Makes me want to play fable
Or Fallout 3
Or Fallout 3
Though Fable came first.
But fable had that super accurate face editor. I mean, fable could've had that, but I didn't play fable 2.
Don't forget to give a random factor to how well you age, or it'll average out over the generations.
I hope this never gets used in games, because with 2 parents only producing 1 child, eventually the game will only have 2 npc's. :colbert:
And by a lot of freeform games, you mean fallout?
Don't forget STALKER and Borderlands. [editline]08:53PM[/editline] Not to mention there are still ones in development such as Rage.
Don't forget STALKER and Borderlands. [editline]08:53PM[/editline] Not to mention there are still ones in development such as Rage.
Both those examples aren't really freeform, it's like saying Crysis was freeform, sure the levels weren't perfectly linear, but you're still stuck on a single story line on a single path through one level after another.
Stalker lets you go about anywhere that isn't completely mission anchored.
Stalker lets you go about anywhere that isn't completely mission anchored.
It lets you go about anywhere...In a single area, then you move to the next area and can't go back, it's like Crysis, still linear.
It lets you go about anywhere...In a single area, then you move to the next area and can't go back, it's like Crysis, still linear.
I don't know about you, but I could move freely between most areas.
It lets you go about anywhere...In a single area, then you move to the next area and can't go back, it's like Crysis, still linear.
Uh, you can go back to pretty much everywhere, same as in Borderlands. I dunno what games you were playing.
