Bioshock (The Original) is my favorite game of all time, and everyone says it's the spiritual successor to System Shock 2, which already sounds good if it's at all like Bioshock 2.
Now, I'm gonna be honest, I'm a bit of a console gamer, and haven't been gaming all my life, will I enjoy System Shock 2?
Oh, and how scary is it? Bioshock was scary, is it scarier?
UPDATE
I saw a video of the Shodan character saying "LOOK AT YOU HACKER" and I think 'm going to cry
System Shock 2 is a complex shooter, adventure game with roleplaying elements. Bioshock on the other hand, is a casual console shooter aimed for the mainstream market.
My opinion: you probably won't like it.
I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but c'mon, give Bioshock's story some credit at least.
Sorry, but System Shock 2 is superior in every way.

So, should I just wikipedia the story or soemthing? Cause I'm kinda interested ing getting it.
I quite like both of them. Systems Shocks has an inventory, a more traditional leveling up system where you have points to upgrade yourself. The scariest bit was the Cargo Bay for me.

Ehhh, the ending could have been a hell of a lot better, and the only thing that kept me through the first part of the game was the atmosphere.
But, I'd recommend trying System Shock 2. If you do like it, you'll be amazed. Dunno where you'd find it though, I don't think many copies are for sale, and I'm not sure it's abandonware.
If it is though, you don't really have anything to lose.
A warning: Trying to get the fucker to work on windows XP and up is a bit of an anal pain.
System Shock 2 is a lot more complex than Bioshock, and it is INTENSELY scary (if you want comparison, I did not get scared once in Bioshock, SS2 had me quitting the game out of fear).

I will check....
THE EBAY.
Yeah, Bioshock is a game where you want enemies to show up so you can blow them away with your shotgun or zap them or whatever. When an enemy shows up in System Shock 2, it's more like "OH SHIT WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME".
If you can find it and have the patience to get it to work, yeah.
Definetly, game's awesome.
I've played both Bioshock and System Shock 2.
They're both amazing. The Bioshock hate from System Shock fans is blown way out of proportion. In some ways, I like Bioshock more, and in others, I like System Shock more.
Either way, I bet you'll enjoy it.
I've always wanted to play System Shock 2, but the only thing standing in my way is that I don't know where to get a copy.
Well this seems like an appropriate thread to post this.
How do you get SS2 to install on Windows 7? Every time I try, it says something about DirectX 6 incompatibility, I have the tool to make it work on modern PC's but I cant use that until I install the game itself.
then install the game if that's what it's asking for you to do.
I tried playing System Shock 1 and 2 but I just couldn't. I'm fine with most old games but they're pretty dated in every aspect, especially System Shock 1. Getting them to work in the first place is a pain, and then playing them is even harder, mostly because of the controls and the fact that for some reason I couldn't jump in System Shock 2.
You should totally get it. I still have my copy from years ago, and I still play it to this day. That is, whenever I get the courage to play it. It really is a fantastic game, probably my favorite of all time.
Just remember to run it on one core and use Windows 2000 compatibility mode if you run into issues.
You won't like it.
Just finished System Shock 2, very recently had a roommate finish Bioshock, I observed a ton of gameplay and all the important story moments.
I can say that I personally prefer SS2 (BEST FUCKING ENDING EVER, it will make you LOL), but with a few qualms: The weapon repair system sucks early game on harder difficulties. Sucks. Balls. Even the developers between Looking Glass and the SS1 studio were arguing about it.
Hacking is quick and painless, but entirely stat-based and random. Wish there was a bit more skill to it.
Being hella old, the lighting does not contribute to the atmosphere at all. While it's still intense, most areas are very brightly lit, and I'd personally love to see a remake in Unreal 3 or id Tech 4/5 that takes advantage of lighting to full effect.
Music. While the tunes are solid and catchy, there are like four decks of the Von Braun where the music destroys the atmosphere, big-time. The other decks use it more as ambience, and it's done well.
Bioshock 2 has a very interesting story, but it's practically a carbon copy of SS2's underwater (get betrayed, forced to work for bad guy, etc.). It's themes are far, far more interesting, however, as a commentary on objectivist extremes and the nature of man.
Bad: Hacking. Repetitive as fuck. While it requires far more skill than SS2's stat-based hacks, you can spend up to half of a five-minute engagement, a whole two and a half minutes, hacking multiple objects with the same damn pipe-game. BS2 kinda fixed this.
No class system. For most of SS2, you're stuck with the skillset you focus in on for the majority of the game, only becoming a sort of jack-of-all-trades by the very end (if you include Psionics, then that's out the window -- some builds might not touch it or will constantly use it throughout the entire game).
In Bioshock, you're always that jack, spending multiple resources on multiple paths of advancement until your weapons, plasmids, and gene tonics are all maxed-out. In other words, you really don't need to replay the game, since you can just watch the other endings on YouTube. In SS2, you might run through with a vastly different build.
Also, SS2 will kick your ass if you're not on easy. Be prepared.
then install the game if that's what it's asking for you to do.
No, the problem is that it wont let me install the game.

You may have to run the game as an administrator even after following that guide.
[editline]01:08AM[/editline]
Do the following:
1) From the Start Menu, enter "cmd" to bring up a command prompt.
2) Navigate to your DVD-ROM drive. (If your DVD-ROM drive is E, simply enter "e:", without the quotation marks)
2) Enter "setup.exe -lgntforce" in a similar manner to force the setup program to run.
3) Install the game accordingly. When asked, do not install DirectX.
4) Go to http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=392.0
5) From that web page, download and run SS2Tool.
6) Select "Patching Up, "Bug Fixes", and any other options that you want.
7) Have fun! If you can't use items, just save your key bindings, and the bug will go away.
This is how to install it, the bit before is how to make it run.

Thank you very much, I'll let you know if it works
Isnt system shock 2 abandonware ? AKA free.
if you don't like System Shock 2's gameplay you could always put cheats on I would say the story is still worth it, you would not get as much by just reading the story.
Thank you very much, I'll let you know if it works
If that doesn't work, just copy the SHOCK folder from the CD and use the SS2Tools. I remember there was this modding guide from reddit, which was quite good. If I find it I'll let you know.
I say get it, it freaking amazing.
You'll have problems running it if you have a multi-core processor. It crashes, you'll need to set it's affinity only to one CPU.
