so im just having a mess around, and i want to try out this steam wallet thing, im just gonna put £4 on it just to see, but what exactly happens, when you go to checkout does it come up as an option ?
Pretty much yeah. You can put money in the steam wallet and then you can just chose to pay for something using that wallet money.

You put money in it, and later you can buy games with it. Not such a big deal.

I don't see this as much of a point besides it working somewhat like a Steam giftcard. For kids, their parents might put money on their Steam Wallet, and they can buy what they want on their.
For me, I will just keep it on my debit card until I "need" to spend it.
