Well, when I enable them in the highest setting it lags and the framerate drops big time. (And not just in Dalaran)
Here are my specs:

Well I don't have any knowledge about computers at all but everything else is able to run in the highest settings (in WoW).
So, do I need new drivers, enable/disable something else or is my graphic card or something else just shit?
Thanks in advance.
The highest shadow settings give alot of people problems. Just have to deal with it being one notch lower. The big problem it seems comes from the shadows of trees, as when I have the shadow settings all the way up it's fine til I get to a wooded area.
This happens to everyone, and it's worse on ATi cards.
I gain 15-25 FPS from dropping shadows one notch down on my 5770 and it doesn't look any different.
edit: the 4550 is shit
Because the shadows are implemented incredibly badly in WoW. In cataclysm, they're far far better.
Your graphics card sucks dick.
Do you have -opengl on your shortcut? It used to do that for me.
if you run wow with that resolution and 8x AA definetly your fps will drop with shadows with that graphics card.
I'm running 50-80 fps in crowded Dalaran and 25 man raids with same resolution 8x AA and all other maxed including shadows and i have HD5830
The shadows in WoW suck nvidia's cock.
I get a 15fps increase in most places just by dropping the shadow quality one notch down on my 5770.
Same problem, I can go down to 20 fps with a Radeon 5970(killer computer) if I set up the shadows.
How do i run in crowded Dalaran with 50-80fps with everything maxed 1920x1080 8x AA with my HD5830 then O.o
Shadows work fine for me.

It's not just your vcard that needs to be 'killer'.
I just disabled shadows all together. 50FPS everywhere.

By Killer computer I meant a 3.5Ghz quadcore and 8GB RAM.
