A friend of mine recently recommended I get into the MGS series, and when I went to the game store today, I was advised to buy the Subsistence pack, because I was under the impression that it included the first two games in the series. However, I soon found out that 'first two games in the series' meant the Metal Gear series, when I in reality had wanted the first two games in the Metal Gear Solid series. V:v:V
So, FP, should I wait until I play Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 before I play 3, or, since its a prequel, could I still play 3 now and know what the hell is going on?
3,portable ops, peace walker,1,2,4 because 3 PO and PW are prequels.
But if you want to get some of the jokes or cameos then do it 1,2,3,4,portable ops, peace walker

But there wouldn't be any serious gaps in the story that I wouldn't get, right? Because the main reason I'm playing them is because I heard they had an awesome story.
just do it the order they were released
1,2,3,4 PO, PW
no the order is 1 , 2 , 3, PO , 4 ,PW
where are people messing up the order is beyod me

Not big gaps but I would recommend playing it in the order they made them in. I started the series later played them 3,2,PO,4,ACID 2,PW never played 1 yet Ima gunna get it off of psn soon.
Also if you have a psp try the MGS ACID games it has nothing to do with the story of other games but I found ACID 2 fun.

Meh, now I have to buy all the other games. :sigh:
You can get MGS1 off the PSN for $10 for both PS3 and PSP. Start there, then play MGS2, then MGS3, then Portable Ops, then MGS4, then Peace Walker.
Play them in the order they were released and not in chronological order.
Doing that would just spoil parts of the story since you would know things you're not supposed to.
You can get MGS1 and Special Missions for about £20
MGS2 Substance for about the same.
Well worth getting both, although they are quite dear.

Alternatively play MGS3 first, MGS1, MGS2, MGS4.
MGS3 is set in the '60s.
I think it'd be interesting playing MGS3 but I would play them in the order that they were released.
no the order is 1 , 2 , 3, PO , 4 ,PW

That sentence doesn't make ANY sense.
Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker.
no the order is 1 , 2 , 3, PO , 4 ,PW

Because the canon story is 3, PO, PW, MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2, MGS4.
stop being a fucking monkey about it. That's the fucking canon.

This is correct.
Do them in the order they were released if you're on a first play, without the MG's from before MGS1.
If you've played them before, do it in Canon order, with MG1 and MG2.

Yeah but you should really play them in the order they were released otherwise you wouldn't understand some of the plot.
For example in Mgs3 any reference to the patriots in the game will be completely lost because you have to play Mgs2 to get what's happening.

That is the canon but you should play in release order. Chronological order is something fans should do on their second playthrough of the series.
Chronological order isnt really needed. just stick to the main 1/2/3/4 in that order and youll get the best parts of the storyline, as it was made.
If you did 3 before 1 and 2 then some references would slip by you, and may not make as much sense as they should do.

Actually. MGS3's sole role was to explain the Patriots so that MGS2 would actually make sense. No one got anything about the patriots apart from the AI part before MGS3 explained it and MGS4 explained more. I still reccomend the original canon but skipping the MG games.

I find it quite opposite. MGS3 made all that babblin and rabblin about some "wisemens commitee" and "AI Patriots" more understandable. play it first... it serves as a fitting prologue.
Do it in the order they released. Although 3 is a prequel, playing them like this is a bit like watching the star wars saga (in a good way) in terms of finding out things backwards and having them 'ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh' moments or seeing how characters originated or were in their past.
Playing it in any order other than 1, 2, 3, 4 for your first time would be a bad idea.
just do it the order they were released

PO was out before 4
The whole reason to playing it in order of release is so you can go
OOOOh so that's why he/she's like that.
It's so much better that way
I got MGS3 on ebay for £2.49, I was the only bidder.
The twat still hasn't shipped it. I'm starting to get suspicious :/
I really enjoyed MGS1 and MGS2, looking forward to MGS3. Hopefully I'll see a MGS4 port to PC someday.
Is it worth getting PO? I already have PW and I'm guessing PW is more polished in some respect.
OP, you have a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time of gaming in front of you.
Good luck.
Oh and create a time collapse later, in MGS3
Any easter egg collector knows what i mean.
Go in release order.
Prequels are more statisfing when your mouth gawks open to when you see something referencing a future event or seeing a character in a younger form.
Also if you can play MG1 and MG2 they may not be the most fun of them but you'll understand the other games much better.
