I was just wondering what you think makes a good MMORPG? I can't really provide much starting input because I really have almost no idea what makes a good MMORPG.
Well depends.... I think a good combat system, along with a good sound track, some good graphics, good quests, and a good story line makes a good MMORPG, also something that isn't from acclaim :v Good Combat System: Hack and slash and not boring click and wait, the exp should not be too low where you would grind for 3 hours just to get to level 10(Ragnarok) General Gameplay: Has alot of features, such as farming, weapons crafting, weapons upgrading, some type of pet system, a weather system, day and night settings, ect Graphics: Don't play a major role as long as it isn't like Final Fantasy 2..... Although graphics don't affect that much. Story Line sorta puts the atmosphere in the game. A game with good quests and not useless ones:Good Quests would be something that is balanced and is worth the reward, but that differs from the quest reward...... Bad Quest: A super hard quest for a shit gear, a very long but easy quest.. A very short but hard quest.(Unless it has something to do with the storyline)
Quests that have a bit more depth than just "Boars killed 3/10"
See: Star Wars Galaxies 2004 expand it, fix it, and embrace it A game many MMO developers should be taking notes from
Are you thinking like Runescape style quests where each one is part of some story line, or something else?
Well told stories is what most MMOs lack IMO.

Fire mages.
Are you thinking like Runescape style quests where each one is part of some story line, or something else?
That's one thing I think Runescape deserves credit for. Compare their quests to those of nearly any other MMO and Runescape's will most likely be more interesting. Quests in Runescape are designed to capture interest, rather than to perform a grueling task for a mediocre reward.
originality
combat
Well, I think it should atleast have some sub quests that have nothing to do with the story line.. Mabinogi, now that has TONS of sub quests and TONS of mainstream quests.
Quests that have a bit more depth than just "Boars killed 3/10"
I'd like to expand abit more on this. Although your point is true, but i'm fed up of all these MMO's where you simply grind quests and kill thousands of enemies just for the sake of leveling. I know its supposed to have an RPG element, but most of these games make it so that leveling is the MAIN goal of the game. Leveling should be more 3 or 4th in line of importance... sure it get's you places within the game but the doing things just for the purpose of numbers increasing is kinda sad.
Games that aint like click to use that spell and shit. More oblivion style
I definitely agree with that. Levelling shouldn't be the aim of the game.
a dynamic and changeable world thats affected by the players.
a dynamic and changeable world thats affected by the players.
cool idea, but near impossible to do at least in an MMO. They would require insane servers to keep up with all the changes, specially if thousands of players are on at a time.
It depends how dynamic your thinking really. If it was like, lighting conditions change depending on how many people in each faction are online at the time, it probably wouldn't be so bad, especially if it only updated like every hour or something. But if you're thinking like all the fortresses on the map can be customised and destroyed realistically, it might be a bit different. I actually couldn't think of any other examples for a situation that would be hard to keep up with.
EVE market.
EVE market.
Huge-ass world Some backstory Non-shit tier quests Normal leveling so you don't have to grind like crazy or get maxed out stats in one week.
Fun fun fun!
Fairness, Replayability, balance, fun, no grinding, good combat system, nice and mature community, harshness(like eve).
See World of Warcraft.
Fairness, Replayability, balance, fun, no grinding, good combat system, nice and mature community, harshness (like eve).
Aren't they kind of opposites?
dragons
For me, having a wide selection of activities to do and community. Basically the old SWG. Got to know so many people due to starting off as an entertainer, coversations and making friends was pretty cool because I feel that it's much rarer to happen in most MMOs now, mainly people are friends for the sake of their self gain in the long run but SWG seemed different. Multiple things to do other than fighting. Scanning the areas in SWG and placing down resource harvesters and then checking them every time you log on to get the resources from them and then creating shit with is and making your home into a giant warehouse of resources, stacking objects perfectly. A game that felt like a community and everyone somewhat knew eachother. Apart from these things, A smooth, clean easy to work with interface is ideal. MMO communities have been degrading like shit mainly due to the different state of minds of people now imo.
most important to me is a good combat system and good quests, but i dont want to be boringly grinding all the time, but in some games grinding is fun, like diablo 2. ive played that a for a while and its really one of the best ganes ive ever played. lately i've come across this game, Mythos, wich looks pretty cool but is still in closed beta. i signed up for it but i dont think ill get a key, well see. take a look at www.mythos.com
Aren't they kind of opposites?
Nope.
i like 2d pixel art style with fluid animation
Spelling magic words to cast spells into your mic, but that would p fucking white and nerdy.
