I don't get it, why do people love it so MUCH? Believe me, I gave it a chance and I really want to love the fuck out of it. Problem is, it only feels okay at best. (I only have the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)
So can someone please explain why it's so great?

It's a bit like an Italian sports car. It's full of problems which will ruin your life, but you won't care. Well, to a lesser extent. Less life ruining.
It's full of bugs and stupid AI, but the atmosphere and rich open world are enough to compensate for that if the problems don't ruin it for you.

I have to agree with the OP. I've tried probably about 6 times now to get into it. But try as I might, the game just feels clunky and not too fun. :sigh:
I *want* to enjoy it. The atmosphere is pretty cool, but I just can't get past the gameplay.
Theres a mega thread, and if you have the first one get the mod called Stalker Complete 2009 , its vamps off the graphics HUGELY and adds some new features, you have to get into this game's atmosphere.
I tried getting into STALKER and it was going fine until I got to an area where I get shot at from all sides (including fuckers hiding in trees) literally as soon as I load up my save and then it stopped being fun.
Where abouts was that?
To be honest, yes it's a bit hard to get into. It just depends on the kind of gamer you are, I personally enjoy it but others may not. Mods sometimes fix the game but usually make it more difficult, if anything you should go through the game vanilla first then try out some mods.
Or if you have the first you should try out Call of Pripyat, it's much easier in my opinion.
I feel the same way OP, yeah it creates an immersive atmosphere. I don't want to be immersed in an abandoned wilderness, it's just bleak and uninteresting. It's slow and boring, and the presentation is just horrible in every way.
For most people, it's a hit or miss
The atmosphere is amazing.
The story is amazing.
The gameplay is fun and addicting.
It's always different.
That's why I love S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The appealing factor is the adaptability of the game in how it changes; even more so by how mod-able it is. The open-end sandbox gameplay isn't for everyone; neither is the difficulty for everyone.

STALKER has always ran on trash for me. Not that I'm upgraded, it runs maxed out.
Except for RAM. It will eat your RAM and spit it back out without giving you a second look.
It's not supposed to be mainstream. It's a cult game. It has a small but devoted fanbase.

What? I'm playing SoC above an average of 30fps on a 1.6ghz Celeron with a 9400GT and 1GB RAM on 1366x768 native.
On Vista. The OS runs slower on this hardware than the game itself.
I enjoy stalker for its atmosphere, story, gameplay, and difficulty. On master, you have just about the same amount of health as other human enemies, so your shit can get fucked up easy if you're stupid. Especially with mods
it's a game for fat people so they can feel hardcore
