First off, I've been playing games since the Atari 2600 in 1982 when I got it for Christmas so no, I am not a small child. I have a full time job, three children and have all consoles and a gaming PC.
I have seen games "evolve" with graphics, sound, story and more adult content but what I have noticed lately is the increasing number of games with a ton of profanity.
Call of Duty - Started out with minor profanity and has grow into a lot
Battlefield Series - No swearing to excessive
Crysis 1 - A bit into A LOT in Crysis 2
Epic Games - A little to A LOT but they also offer OPTIONS to toggle language and gore.
Is this trend ok? Do you care? Please keep religious and belittling comments OUT of this thread.
Fuck no.
People cuss in real life. Especially when there's a chance they'll DIE.
It's the same with movies.
When used with an actual purpose, and with artistic talent, then I do not mind swearing. If it's just saying "fuckingshitcunts" for the hell of it, then it gets old after a while.
Depends what the game is. In Brothers in Arms, stuff like that, I'll want a lot of swears because of the environment and the sort of characters involved, same with CoD.
The Epic "epic" games crap like Bulletstorm/Gears etc has lots of swears because it's supposed to be overly macho and violent so it makes sense.
As long as they're not putting loads of swears in stuff that doesn't need it then I'm not arsed.
Swearing is cool with me, though can be a little annoying when they put them in as much as possible just for the sake of it. If it fits with the story or characters then I'm all fucking for it.
need a game studio that makes games like will smith makes rhymes
Yeah, I think it's getting pretty fucking ridiculous with the amount of fucking swearing they have in games these days.
But then again, in this day and age... you can't exactly shield your children from these things any more.
They'll pick up these words at their shitty school or from their piss drinking parents that it's inevitable that they'll grow up saying these hateful things.
Fuck the world, God is dead.
I personally don't even notice swearing in games most of the time. As long as the swearing doesn't take away from game experience, I'm fine with it.
It's not too much, except, in my very own opinion, it got a bit overhand in Bulletstorm.

I think it's mostly funnier when it's censored. Like in Brutal Legend, censored is the way to go.
Well, now that the mainstay of 12-year olds is games designated 'Mature 18+' and people play by themselves I think most games gave up the family friendly respect for appeal to teenagers and substituting quality dialogue with shit that's easier to make up since games end up only being around six hours anyway
I didn't really like the immature overuse of swearing in Bulletstorm, it made everyone sound over-the-top and too silly to be taken seriously. As long as it's actually used to express a character's reaction to a dramatic or a big event it fits in well.
There's too much swearing in real-life too, especially in my country, you'd hear almost everyone around you throwing the words "Fuck", "Son of a bitch" "Bitch" and "Fucker", there is no conversation that has no swearing when you talk to one of your friends, casual conversation go like this: "Hey, did you study for the exam yesterday?" "Yeah, it fucking sucked" "Yeah I agree I hate this fucking subject" "Not to mention the finals are coming soon" "Yeah, what a pain in the fucking ass", or so.
I admit I also swear a lot when I converse with my friends, so it doesn't really bother me that much.
For some reason it was hilarious in Mafia II.
Bulletstorm has this to the bone, but I don't mind and I find it nice in such a game. It makes it fun actually.
If it were a game like CoD or something else, it would be bad. But then again, I don't remember hearing much swearing in any game.
Crysis 2 had a bunch, but wasn't anything bad. Think there was a game or a movie where it was just plain awfull to hear it 24/7, but can't remember where.
I am not really interested in if you agree with swearing or think "everyone swears so it's cool" but more of the TREND in gaming. COD 1, 2 or 3 didn't have any F bombs.. yet Black Ops has a ton.
Battlefield 1942 had no F bombs.. yet Bad Company 2 is loaded with them. Does it really make the game... better?
It's full of dumb american swearing in most games, it just gets boring. They try too hard to come over in a comical way, instead they make themselves sound even more stupid than they already are. I don't care about it since I skip all cutscenes in most games nowadays (no story/originality), but a bit less swearing could be considered to.

even if you sent your kid to fucking eton he's still going to learn bad language, it's a natuural part of life and not 'society going down the drain'

I didn't notice because it was normal, it's just another word and saying it while you get shot makes a lot of sense.

Thats entirely the point of the game, you're not meant to take it seriously, otherwise you'd scare the dick off people.
Only when it sounds contrived
mommy doesn't let me play games with cursing :(
Swearing Emphasizes, adds comedic effect, and sums up in one word what you would normally take 10+ words to say
Bring on the swears
F-bombs errywhere.
Besides, once you see this, you know bulletstorm isn't meant to be serious.

No, Bulletstorm was the most serious game in history it was based on actual events and stuff.
