Warzone 2100 is a now free rts by Pumpkin Studios, published by Eidos Interactive in 1999 for the original Playstation and Microsoft Windows. The story is relatively simple, as shown by wikipedia's summary below.
Story
In the late 21st century, the world's civilizations are wiped out by a series of nuclear strikes. While most of the survivors form scavenger bands to survive, one group of people, who refer to themselves as "The Project," seeks to rebuild civilization using pre-war technology.
The game begins with The Project sending three teams to gather technology that would help with reconstruction; the player assumes command of the team in Arizona. While gathering said "artifacts," the Project fends off attacks from an organization called the New Paradigm, which is under the command of an organization called Nexus, which is actually one man responsible for the nuclear war. In the final campaign, the Project launches a full-scale assault on Nexus, destroying it and thus removing all significant, organized barriers to its reconstruction of the Earth.
Gameplay is the same as any old RTS, you gather resources or in Warzone's case, a single resource, power to build various building and units. What sets Warzone apart from other RTSes is the fact that the units are not pre-made, you have to build them from parts researched. Building them is split into 3 parts, the chassis, the drive system, and the weapon/tool. They all vary on speed and health, armor and type. The tech tree is massive and somewhat confusing.
Warzone's developer, Pumpkin Studios, released the last patch on November 1999, closing down the 15 of March, 2000. Eventually it was revived as Pivotal Studios, before closing down again. In October 1999, a group called NEWST took over, later becoming PUMPKIN 2 in February 2003. Pumpkin 2 released a patch adding many things into the game, before going through a bit of downtime. During that, they released a petition asking Eidos to release the source code and make Warzone 2100 free. The source code was released on the 6th of December, 2004. After a bit Pumpkin 2 became the Warzone 2100 Project, developing the game using free and open source alternatives. Today the game is availible for free at the Warzone 2100 Project.
Vehicle Creation
Warzone has many, many options for vehicle creation it'd be too time consuming to write about them. You can go from fragile yet deadly artillery to an armored death flyer. With the single click of a button you can change a tank to an anti-infantry vehicle, an anti-aircraft force or perhaps artillery to bomb the enemy to hell from the comfort of your base. Maybe you'd prefer a speedy medic to help on the front line, or a quick response engineer. Maybe turn a VTOL used for anti-tank operations to the bringer of death. Oh how fun it is to make a bomber swarm...

This op looked larger when I was writing this, I swear.
Second thread dead.
You barely wrote about one of the best features. The vehicle creation one.
I think I played this.
Never got into it.
Had this on the PS1 back in the day. I always wanted to play as the scavengers for some reason.
I really love this game, the unit pathing can be frustrating sometimes but the actual gameplay makes up for it, I've always been a sucker for the ability to create your own units like in Warzone 2100 and the Earth series.
I love this game. The enormous tech tree is awesome and the way that the campaign is done is really creative.
I would recommend this game.
Trying this out.
One thing that sucks is the crazy good AI. I swear, they see one of your units in a skirmish, you're dead. That's why the thread name is Warzone 2100 - Free Tank Rush Sim. You will not survive.
I played this on PS1, awesomest thing ever. So these guys added a load of new stuff?
Fantastic to see it brought forward a bit. It's fakken awsm.
I had this game in a bundle with Windows 2000. This game was the shit back then....
Palyed this on ps1 was like wowwowowow a 3D RTS
