There lies a land embraced by mighty gods
Her name...Eorzea.
As fates cross, swords will clash.
Under the eldritch veil of a crimson shadow.
Heroes of the realm, take up your blades!
To answer the call of destiny.
You must join hands...once again.
[release]The Armory System
In the game there are four base disciplines, which each divide into several classes. Each class has its own weapon type, and changing classes is as simple as changing weapons, which is referred to as the Armory System. Classes can be changed at any time, except during a battle.
An armor in Final Fantasy XIV. In this specific example, any rank 50 disciple of magic will get the full gear stats.
You can use almost any skill on any class after learning it, but each skill has an invisible "affinity" value that limits its effectiveness, reducing power and increasing cast and recast times when used on another class. For example, the healing spell "Sacrifice" learned by Thaumaturges has a high affinity with the Conjurer class, working nearly the same when used by one. However, using it on an Archer will result in a noticeably higher recast time and lower HP healing. To help alleviate this, every fighting class has an affinity trait that can be purchased with Guild Marks which increases the affinity for all of its skills when used by another class. The number of skills and traits that can be used at a time is limited by Action Points.
Due to the nature of the Armory System, there is no kind of restriction for using equipment, as you can use any equipment on any class at any rank (except shields that are limited to some classes), and the game scales down the gear based on the difference between current rank to the gear's "Optimal Rank" - the rank where it will provide its full stats. Also, some gear may also have "Favored Classes". While those pieces can also be used by everyone, using in any class that's not the favored will incur a stat decrease, even if the player's rank is at or above the Optimal Rank. This system helps changing classes on the fly, as the player is not forced to have completely different equipment sets for every class he plays. The addition of Rank and Class restricted gear is currently planned.[/release]

"Never did we expect to encounter such a diverse and wealthy people! And so very tall!"
- from Travel Logs of a Lalafell, Jajariku Nanariku
Elezen (El-uh-zen)

In former times, the Elezen were the sole inhabitants of Eorzea, claiming dominion over her. Traditionally a nomadic people, the tall, slender Elezen believed the realm to be theirs by divine right—a gift from the Twelve themselves. Unfortunately, this belief made the eventual appearance of the Hyur in their multitudes akin to an invasion, and a long history of conflict ensued.
Ultimately, the Elezen diverged into the two clans that exist today. The Wildwood Elezen took to the forests in their ongoing fight to protect their homeland against the encroaching Hyur, while the Duskwight Elezen withdrew to caves and sub-terrain, opting instead to avoid all contact with any but their own.
Clans:
Duskwight

The Duskwight Elezen have spent centuries in the peace and seclusion of Eorzea's caves and caverns. They have developed an acute sense of hearing, capable of detecting the faintest of sounds. This natural gift, and the uncanny awareness it grants, has proven advantageous in the field of hand-to-hand combat. Many of the reclusive Duskwight resort to robbery and pillaging to survive, earning them the scorn of their woodland relatives.
Wildwood

For hundreds of years the Wildwood Elezen have lived in the safety of Eorzea's lush forests. They possess an incredibly keen sense of sight - a contributing factor in their unparalleled expertise as archers. With the formation of the realm's governments, many Wildwood ventured forth from the forests, drawn either to the exhilarating cosmopolitanism of the urban centers or the simple nomadism of the plains.
Hyur (hee-oor)

The Hyur are said to have first traveled to Eorzea from the surrounding continents and islands.
Some one thousand years and three great migratory waves later, they are now the most populous of all the civilized races. They exhibit a relatively modest physique, both in height and build, and are known for their peculiarly short, rounded ears. Hyur are well-suited for traveling long distances by foot, a trait thought to account for their swift proliferation.
Their espousal of an eclectic variety of languages and traditions is a legacy of their diverse heritage—as is their resulting lack of a unified cultural identity.
Clans:
Highlanders

The Highlanders were the first of the Hyur to reach Eorzea. Their name derives from their long tradition of building strongholds in the mountains. Compared to their Midland brethren, the Highlanders are noticeably larger in build. They adhere to the doctrine of the Twelve, and are devout followers of Rhalgr, the Destroyer.
Ancient Highlander practices of tattooing and tooth filing are still very much alive today. Of late, Highlanders have become an increasingly rare sight in Eorzea, their number represented almost exclusively by those who fled Ala Mhigo after its fall, and now work in the other city-states as mercenaries and sellswords.
Midlanders

The Midlander clan comprises over half of the total population of Eorzea's Hyur. They have established themselves throughout every city in the realm and lead lives as diverse as their heritage.
Trained in letters from infancy, the Midlanders are generally more educated than many of the other races and clans. Despite the fact that males tend to be slightly taller than females, there are no significant differences between the genders.
Lalafell (lah-lah-fell)

A wee people sporting short, rotund bodies, the Lalafell appear as no more than children to the eyes of most. Many of these nimble little folk hail from the islands of the south seas, where they practice a simple agricultural lifestyle. It was not until the opening of maritime trade routes that the gradual migration of Lalafell to Eorzea began.
Now one of the most well-established races in the realm, Lalafell can be found in great numbers in nearly every city. Though Lalafellin culture places great emphasis on blood relations, individuals are known for getting along amicably with members of all races.
Clans:
Dunesfolk

Perhaps the most unique characteristic of the Dunesfolk is their native dwellings—structures affixed to the backs of large beasts of burden. It is in this way that they are able to traverse the vast desert expanses of the islands which they call home. The luminous eyes of the Dunesfolk are a result of a glossy, protective layer which covers the pupil, an evolutionary response to the region's glaring sunlight.
Many individuals wear a small, traditional gemstone on their forehead, a symbol of their zodiacal sign. They are adamant about scholasticism, placing the advancement of knowledge before all else. Other races tend to perceive male Dunesfolk as introverts who care more for books than the goings-on of the realm.
Other races tend to perceive female Dunesfolk as gentle souls with a love for fortune-telling and divination.
Plainsfolk

The flat landscapes of the Plainsfolk's home islands are dotted with the clan's traditional thatched huts, beneath which lie intricate networks of underground passageways. Their distinct hair coloration—a myriad of earthy and grassy tones—helps them to blend in well with their environment, acting as an effective camouflage against would-be attackers. The long, pointy ears of the Plainsfolk are extremely sensitive, said to be able to detect the faintest scampering of the prairie's various fauna.
They are a clever and opportunistic people, and crafty with their words. These traits have helped the Plainsfolk excel in the arena of business. The generally accepted view of Plainsfolk males is that they are a cheerful lot, with a weakness for festivals and celebrations.
The generally accepted view of Plainsfolk females is that they are a vibrant lot, with a penchant for excessive conversation.
Miqo'te (Mee-KO-tay)

The ancestors of the Miqo'te made their way to Eorzea during the Age of Endless Frost, traversing the frozen seas in pursuit of the wildlife upon which they subsisted. Adaption to a hunting lifestyle has fashioned them with a keen sense of smell, powerful legs, and a tail which provides them with exceptional balance.
Miqo'te are known to be very territorial, and many individuals tend to lead solitary lifestyles, particularly males. The few Miqo'te who have made the transition to life in Eorzean society are predominantly female.
Clans:
Keepers of The Moon

The nocturnal among the Miqo'te have dubbed themselves the Keepers of the Moon. Shying from the garish light of day, they revel in the shroud of night, with most offering their piety to Menphina the Lover, goddess of the moon.
They are distinguishable from their diurnal cousins by their darker fur, larger ears, rounder eyes, more pronounced canines, and longer, skinnier tails. The ritual application of war paint to the face is still regularly practiced, as it is believed the vivid colors grant lunar powers.
The Keepers are known for their reticent and brooding personalities, but are also respected and sometimes feared for their tenacity.
Seekers of The Sun

The self-proclaimed Seekers of the Sun are the diurnal clan of the Miqo'te race. Their preference for the warm light of day pervades all aspects of their culture, as is apparent in their devout reverence for Azeyma the Warden, goddess of the sun.
They are perhaps known best for their striking eyes- the result of their vertically aligned pupils and faintly colored irises. It is also not uncommon for their eyes to be disparately colored from birth, a trait considered auspicious amongst their kind.
The Seekers are widely regarded as quick-witted and prone to action, and many exhibit a tendency to bore easily.
Roegadyn (ROO-guh-deen)

Known for their brawny builds and piercing eyes, the Roegadyn are the largest and most rugged of Eorzea's races.
The majority of the realm's Roegadyn belong to the Sea Wolf clan, a maritime people who earn their keep on or by the sea, be it as sailors, Fisherman, or pirates. Comparatively fewer in number are the Hellsguard who are known for their more earnest demeanors and can often be found working as bodyguards and smithies.
Clans:
Hellsguard

The Hellsguard are a clan of Roegadyn with body and mind tempered by the unforgiving heat of the volcanic regions they inhabit. Believing these mountains of flame to be gates to the underworld, their line has for centuries stood vigil over them to prevent the passage of souls back to the realm of the living. Their sheer girth and steely demeanor open to the Hellsguard a wide range of paths, from the martial to the monastic.
Sea Wolves

The Sea Wolves originally hail from the islands of the far north seas, where they still subsist as fishermen and women. Long ago, no vessel or coastal village was safe from their maritime brand of brutality. Now, it is not uncommon to see them employed as sailors or naval mercenaries on all manner of vessels.[/release]

Gridania

"Each tree, each shrub, each leaf, each blade of grass -- we treat them as
our own sons and daughters. And for that we are loved by this wood."
-- master conjurer and prophet, O-Guna-Por
In the eastern reaches of the Aldenard landmass, home to vast, dense woodlands and
coursing rivers, lies the forest nation of Gridania. The cityscape is a mosaic of labyrinthine
waterways and great wooden structures, so gracefully constructed they seem a part of the
surrounding environment.
The main body of Gridania is known as the Heartstream. Connecting to the Heartstream
are Lily Hills and the Lotus Gardens.
The Gridanian emphasis on natural harmony has led to its preeminence among Eorzea's
city-states in trades such as forestry, agriculture, carpentry, and leatherworking. Gridania
is also home to the Wood Wailers, a militant band of polearm-wielding sentries charged
with the protection of their homeland.
The favored goddess of the citizenry is Nophica, the Matron, but great faith is also placed
in the wisdom of the Seedseers -- young oracles who guide the nation based on the will of
the forest's elementals.
Limsa Lominsa

"No man may tread upon me, for I am the sea."
- 77th Admiral of Limsa Lominsa, N'bolata Tyata
On the southern coast of the island of Vylbrand, under the shadow of ancient cliffs worn by
the relentless onslaught of the Rhotano Sea, lies the maritime city-state of Limsa Lominsa.
Said to be blessed by the goddess of navigation, Llymlaen, the city is spread out over
countless tiny islands, each connected by sturdy bridges of iron and wood construction,
earning her the name the "Navigator's Veil" from traveling bards who have witnessed the
city's beauty from afar.
Limsa Lominsa is a traditional thalassocracy, with power lying in the hands of the ruling
party and its leader -- the Admiral. Its economy is driven by shipbuilding, fishing, and
blacksmithing, but the majority of wealth comes from the lucrative shipping industry.
To maintain the safety of its maritime routes, the city employs a formidable navy known as
the Knights of the Barracuda. However, even in the waters nearby the city, pirate bands
run rampant, reaving and pillaging.
Legend holds that Limsa Lominsa was founded shortly after the remnants of a giant armada fled from its homeland following a crushing
defeat. Llymlaen is said to have taken pity on the plight of these brave sailors, and guided them to the shallows of a rocky bay where their
ships were grounded upon the sharp rocks. With no home to return to, the sailors chose to settle in this newly-found land, and use the
remnants of their vessels to begin construction of a city.
However, the sailors never forget their nautical backgrounds, and once a new fleet was in order, they would take to the waters again. It was
only a matter of time before their influence spread and they ruled the five seas of Eorzea. Thus, the Limsan thalassocracy was born.
Remnants of this legend live on even today in the nation's ruling party, whose members still address their leader as Admiral.
Ul'dah

"Everyone here is after something -- fame, notoriety, power, money. Me?
I'll have the whole bloody lot."
-- self-made Lalafell and former Syndicate Member, Cicidoa Sosodoa
The bustling commercial hub of Ul'dah sits amid the desolate desert landscape of
southern Aldenard. The city is organized strategically around the dome-shaped citadel at
its center. Its towering fortifications and protective outer walls are visible for malms in all
directions, and serve as a stark deterrent to would-be besiegers.
The main section of Ul'dah is known as The Fronds, while the Ruby Road Exchange and
Sapphire Avenue Exchange and the Market Wards are contained in a section called The
Dunes.
Visitors from every corner of Eorzea come to Ul'dah to partake of the city's famed
recreation, most notably the fighting arenas and gambling halls. Ul'dahn culture is known
for its affluence, and the wealth of the nation comes in large part from its abundant mineral
resources and prestigious clothcrafting industry.
Historically, it is the sultan who claims sovereignty over Ul'dah, but true power is wielded
by the Syndicate, an elite group of six of the most influential and richest members of
society. Nald'thal is the patron deity of the city, and two great halls, devoted to his two
aspects, can be found in the eastern and western section of the city. [/release]

The Grand Companies of Eorzea Return!
The Grand Companies of Eorzea are a military alliance of nations united in common cause to avert imminent catastrophe
from engulfing the realm, each city-state charged with mustering its resources under the banner of an elite regiment. At
their commanders' behests, the companies have begun petitioning able men and women to join their ranks regardless of
birth and standing. In due time, that selfsame clarion call will sound out to those intrepid individuals known as adventurers.
To be a part of the Grand Companies is to be a part of history in the making. Grow strong through cooperation and rivalry,
and earn yourself boundless glory and a place in history. Will you lend your stout sword arm to the cause?
Do Your Part for the Survival of Eorzea!
The first step to joining the Grand Companies involves enlisting in one of three regiments: the Maelstrom, helmed by Chief
Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn; the Order of the Twin Adder, lead by Elder Seedseer Kan-E-Senna; or the Immortal Flames,
commanded by Flame General Raubahn Aldynn. To ensure the optimal allocation of manpower, a trial enlistment system
will be established whereby individuals can discover firsthand with which company's ethos they most closely identify—it
matters not wherefrom one hails.
In time, you will find yourself prompted to formally enlist. To which company would you swear allegiance? For whom
would you lay down life and limb? Only you will know the answer to these questions.
Upon induction, you will be awarded the initial rank given to all new recruits, and may count yourself among elite. Company
members will be assigned missions vital and diverse in nature, ranging from skirmishes with Garlean forces and savage
beast tribes to supply replenishment and manufacturing. Whatever your strength and specialty, rest assured in the
knowledge that your presence will make a difference.
Prove your worth by unfailingly completing the tasks assigned, and you will climb the ranks and be entrusted with missions
of greater import and issued powerful equipment befitting your prowess. As a special provision exempts adventurers from
bound service, you are free to take up the cause at your own pace and convenience. Yet know that disaster waits for no
man, like a dark cloud overhead spreading its shadowy demesne ahead of the coming storm. And when the day of
reckoning arrives, all adventurers will find their steel tested to the farthest limit.

Game is actually pretty fun as of late. Started playing again for the first time since about January after patch 1.17 came out this week. Pretty good update from what I've seen so far, the game is far better than it was at release.
Still waiting to get a solid answer if it is one time payment. I know most people have said we are gonna have to pay eventually, most likely later in the year, but that's just a maybe.

So far the way it works is you pay for the game, one subscription installment, and that's it until they start charging us monthly.
Is there a free trial? I would like to try the game before purchasing. Since ive heard it is pretty bad.
Is there a free trial? I would like to try the game before purchasing. Since ive heard it is pretty bad.
Sadly no, there isn't.
Awwww....
Awwww....
You could find out if someone still has a buddy pass to give you, they were given to anyone that got the collector's edition.
No worries now. I went to my local Gamestop and they had a buy 3, pay for 2(9$ games) and I snatched myself a copy of Empire total war, Alpha protocol and Final Fantasy 14 all for 18$.
Installing now.

Final fantasy 4.0 is free from subscription fees till they "stop being so bad".
In other words, you buy the game, you set up a subscription and you'll get to play on your free 30 days for as long as square enix thinks the game is bad.
That's how it works basically.
I recently bought it myself and started playing on lindblum. Roegadyn Lancer
Question is, why do you want to play a game that even the developers think is bad?
Or rather, I think they know that the majority will leave after they'll activate the monthly sub, so they're trying out different methods of surviving (this one being B2P)

Why didn't you start on Trabia!? :arghfist::saddowns:
Why didn't you start on Trabia!? :arghfist::saddowns:
Because certain people from a certain site on a certain board that only consists of the letter "v" play on lindblum.
That and I always had my eyes on lindblum as it was the most populated on day 1.

Because they HAD to release it due to deadlines.
Square enix is really a bitch on deadlines, which in the end could screw over certain games.
They've been updating it non-stop now so if you're a fan of the series and actually have a bith of faith in the FFXIV crew, it could become amazing.

Hrm. It doesn't look like I can just buy a digital download version of it. Can I?

Not sure to be honest, but there's no harm in checking to find out.
If buying physical is the only option it's not really that expensive, looking at the Best Buy.com website it says that it's about 40 bucks or so for the standard edition. Dunno how much it'd be for other places but meh V:v:V
I looked and couldn't find anything very legitimate.

Sadly I don't really think there is, so buying physical is your best bet imo.
Also I look rediculous in this hat:

Yeah, looks like the only option is to either buy it online or get a buddy pass.

So, would this game be worth it after these updates? I wanted to shell out the $50 just because I enjoyed FFXI so much, and I need a new MMO.
Unfortunately, I have no friends with a buddy pass.
Oh man, Pugilist is a fun class imo. Nothing more satisfying than wailing on a Dodo with your fists. :buddy:

50$? You'll easily find it for 15-20$ at most.
