I Want to build something on an epic scale i just don't know what.
Please give me a picture of something to build.
make tons of small things to form a city with them!

Can't really help you, but I've got a tip: try minimizing the use of cobble, even a little wooden home is better then one twice as large made of cobble. People will admire your creation more, since you've put in the effort of using wood/smoothstone.

Why do so many people hate cobblestone and love smoothstone? I kinda hate the look of smoothstone. It makes me think the buildings were just mined out, not created.

On the default pack from a distance, cobble looks ungodly, as in it hurts my eyes. Smoothstone is, well, smoother, so it looks better from a distance.
Just avoid cobble and smoothstone altogether and use sandstone for some epic desertbuildings.

Well I never use the default texture pack, so I guess I don't notice it.
