So you may of heard of EVE online selling 70 dollar monocoles, well the players certainly heard and it certainly dosn't help when an internal dev newsletter is leeked titled "Greed is good?"

Naturally players numbering in the thousands are now rioting, firing on ingame stations and economic hubs. CCP is currently trying to run damage control, arguing that real life clothes are expensive and that you dont have to buy them:
People have been shocked by the price range in the NeX store, but you should remember that we are talking about clothes. Look at the clothes you are currently wearing in real life. Do you have any specific brands? Did you choose it because it was better quality than a no-name brand? Assume for a short while that you are wearing a pair of $1,000 jeans from some exclusive Japanese boutique shop. Why would you want to wear a pair of $1,000 jeans when you can get perfectly similar jeans for under $50? What do other people think about you when they see you wearing them? For some you will look like the sad culmination of vainness while others will admire you and think you are the coolest thing since sliced bread. Whichever it is, it is clear that by wearing clothes you are expressing yourself and that the price is one of the many dimensions that clothes possess to do that in addition to style and fit. You don't need to buy expensive clothes. In fact you don't need to buy any clothes. Whatever you choose to do reflects what you are and what you want others to think you are.
I am personally not a player my self but all this rioting is understandable and I'd have to agree with the rioters.
Are the rioters justified or is this just one huge riot of butthurt?
[sp]First big thread be gentle[/sp]
In game footage of riot:

I guess they've been rioting for 11 hours now.
I thought the space police shot at you, if you fired at a station.
I thought the space police shot at you, if you fired at a station.
fuck the space police
[editline]25th June 2011[/editline]
the riots are completely understandable, but I doubt they will change anything in the end.
I thought the space police shot at you, if you fired at a station.
Yeah but there's like a thousand people in Jita alone, not enough space police to go around :v:
$70 for a monocle? That puts the celestial steed to shame in WoW.
they are legion
These riots are more understandable than the Canadian riots
what's the big deal you can get them with ingame money and they're permanent. decking your guy out with all the cool shit shouldn't be cheap or it wouldn't be cool shit
Just don't buy them then, wasn't that hard?
Eve is incredible to study, the social interactions and economics are unlike anything else. I've never played it myself, but it's probably the most successful MMO in terms of actually being it's own independant, fully functioning, self sufficient universe.
The awesome shit that goes down is great, it's like something out of a movie. Like that time a guild (or the eve equivalent) sent a spy into their biggest rival's ranks, and it took him like 5 years to work his way to the top then he completely fucked them over from the inside out. Badass.

True but I belive it's more of a matter of principle, the players don't aprove of the micro transactions and their ridiculous prices.

Indeed, not my kind of game but it's certainly a game to watch from afar, a popcorn game if you will.
Just wait till Dust comes out. Then they can take the rioting to the stations :science:
At first I thought people were stupid for complaining about micro-shit. But now that I know this... Well, this is just bullshit.
Just don't buy them then, wasn't that hard?
The internal newsletter is actually pretty bad. It's talking about something that might compare to a pay2win system, were players can buy ships and ship modules for real money.
CCP also basically said the players were stupid and would continue to pay for anything they threw out.
Luckily I don't play EVE.
CCP also basically said the players were stupid and would continue to pay for anything they through out.
Like half of the people who play Eve on my friends list have cancled their subscriptions because of that leaked memo. CCP is going through shit right now.
I hate these people. They are protesting about shit that doesn't matter and they are also clogging up Jita. I can't trade and haul stuff, i'm losing ISK and it's their fault. CCP should just ban these idiots

The rules of the game say they can, if you don't like it, counter-riot.
what's the big deal you can get them with ingame money and they're permanent. decking your guy out with all the cool shit shouldn't be cheap or it wouldn't be cool shit
Except not a monocle costs more than fully equipped battleships, hell a fleet of battleships. Hell a shirt costs more than a months subscription.
It's not so much that these cost loads, It's the level of exchange, I think most people expected to be able to use one PLEX to be able to get at least a new outfit, not just part of one.
Microtransactions for cosmetic items, I don't think Eve players are opposed to, its just the damn price, a shirt that costs 1plex ($14 or 400mil ingame based ont rading rates)

Yes yes. Ban the people that make you money while they're protesting against the fact that they don't want to be milked of money.
Just wait till Dust comes out. Then they can take the rioting to the stations :science:
I duhno, blowing up stuff in game sounds more effective.
Edit: added video to op.
haha a micro transaction that costs more than a new release.
Expensive shirt as an in-game item.
Destroy everything in protest.

What type of free addon is 'Dust' again?
What type of free addon is 'Dust' again?
The one that will give stations 3d space for players to walk around in if i'm not mistaken.
Edit: Never mind. dust is the console game they're working on not the update.
Oh god they're rioting?
This is the funniest shit I've seen in awhile. I might join them. Been wanting to try out my Drake for awhile :v:
Surely a better form of protest would be to cancel subscriptions and not play it?
something like this is probably going on (different of course)

but then against CCP itself.
