Weird things with video games and their ingame emails

Alright, so we got games like Vampire the Masquerade, Indigo Prophecy, Assassin's Creed with ingame emails which you can check. You can't really compose a message, (Maybe in some you can) but of course you can read them. You login, check your emails...hmm...let's see. Message from your Boss...message from your girlfriend....message from your mum....wait..what's THIS?!

I notice that you can find this infamous in most of these games with ingame emails. It can be funny, but a weird fad for the devs to put in. Thoughts?
