Tropico is from the people who made railroad tycoon, which is a pretty awesome game. They took some elements and made it into a city builder, but this time you were dealing with a 3rd world oceanic tropical country. You are not "mayor for life," rather you must gain political respect with groups ranging from religious fanatics to communists to intellectuals. You get overthrown if you suck, or beaten in an election. You can rig elections and do Latin America politics like that.
Tropico 1 has an expansion which adds more scenarios and more tourist operations. You build structures and issue edicts ranging from martial law to opening a swiss bank account for yourself. You can be as corrupt as you would like, I for one enjoy marking political adversaries as heretics.
Here's a picture, you can see agriculture, housing, the dock and shit

Tropico 2 is built on basically the same engine, except this time your run a fucking island full of whore loving grog drinking rowdy pirates. Instead of citizens, you get slave labor to do work and pirates to go looting and shit, in between voyages they just eat and wench. Every pirate has his own likes, dislikes, skills, moods, and thoughts.
You issue commands for you pillaging fleet while controlling your island. You can forge alliances with foreign nations or stay independent. It's nothing like Tropico 1, but feels the same.
Here is some boats, some pirate structures and a few captive things.

If you havn't played this yet and have a decent comp go for it, it's cheap on steam now. The car and road system is pretty cool, but it still maintains some of the restrictions (and classic gameplay) from the older ones.
wikipedia:
Players begin having seized power of the Caribbean island country of Tropico, where they rule as "El Presidente". The game offers: a comprehensive campaign with 15 different missions, a variety of business sectors, a time line editor that allows you to create your own fictitious historical events or enter real ones, custom avatar, political speeches, wide range of editing and modification functions, mission generator for random map creation, variety of online-functions such as high scores or visiting islands belonging to other players and a Latin soundtrack.[2]
The game combines city management with a wide variety of residential, economic, civic, and military structures and transportation and resourcing management, with political gameplay including a variety of factions with needs and demands, elections, coups and revolutions when needs are not met, and the ability to follow each Tropican including key faction leaders individually, determining individual needs and orientations, and apply a variety of means of persuasion from improvement of conditions or bribes to firing, imprisonment, and assassination.
I perfer Tropico 1 then 2, because 1 seem to be more fun then 2 due to how you have more options then 2.
I found the Tropico Mucho Macho edition at a garage sale. I forgot how awesome it was.
I used to play Tropico all the time. I never played two though.
Major nostalgia attack. :3
Tropico 2 was shit, Tropico 3 looks good.
My brother actually gave me his copy of Tropico many years ago, but I never installed it. Wonder if I should?

Go for it, it's fun.
I fucking loved Tropico 1. I think I lost the CD though...
I hope they keep the same style of music in 3 as was in 1. I still listen to it.
I signed up for the beta but I didn't get in :(
I still play Tropico 1. Pretending to be Fidel is just so much fun. :buddy:
They included an Obama starting class this time
TROPPPICCOOOOOOOOOO
I loved this game.
1001'th post
This game is awesome. I only have the first one and it's just a demo. I'm too poor (or lazy) to get the full thing, even though I want to.
3 will be great
I loved the first one, expansion was a bit underwhelming, didn't bother with 2 and 3 looks like it could be good.
I'd always think things out badly and end up going bankrupt but occasionally I'd get a great island going, only to be crushed by poor housing planning.
Tropico Pirate Cove was fucking incredible.
Tropico Pirate Cove was fucking incredible.
it's mixed, if you enjoyed tropico 1 you won't necessarily like tropico 2
they are 2 radically different games
I used to love Tropico!
Can't wait for Tropico 3!
A friend of mine played it, looked kind of cool. I think I will get the demo.
I used to have Tropico. I can't find my disk and I am frantically searching for it.
Also don't you just love the 2d isometric look of the game? I'm a sucker for these games (Rollercoaster Tycoon, older RTS, etc.).
What happens when you are not in political power?
I had Tropico 1 but I didn't like the feel, nor the fact that they used parts of the Railroad Tycoon engine.
Tropico 2 looks awesome though, I think I'll get it.
I laughed at how similar it looks to Railroad Tycoon II, not a bad thing but you can really tell they're based on the same engine. I've seen this game in the bargain bin lots of times but was never tempted to buy it, next time I see it I might give it a go.
Oh fuck yes they're making a new one my dream has come true. :4chan:
Such a good fucking game.
Tropico is for BADASSES, because it is BADASS.
My 6th grade science teacher played Tropico. I just remember him saying, "EL PRESIDENTE," all the time.
What happens when you are not in political power?
I think it's game over from that point
you have plenty of options to stay in power though, keep a half decent military and you can resist the rebel attacks caused by canceling the elections
I just installed it again :buddy: The music is really awesome.
