[release]When I awoke, we were in the forest we'd played in so often as kids.
"...lise! Elise!"
I could hear the voice of my sister calling me.
I glanced in the direction of the sound,
expecting to see my worried sister...
Translucent wings on a tiny body...
There was a fairy where my sister should have been.
Could this be the witch's curse?...
If it is, then there's only one answer:
we find the witch... and make her turn Chante back![/release]
Chantelise is an upcoming game by Japanese developer EasyGameStation, and translated by Carpe Fulgur. Recognize the names? That's probably because they're the developers and translators (respectively) of the shop-keep game Recettear. Chantelise is an action-RPG staring the titular Elise and her older sister Chante. Chante has been cursed and turned into a fairy. Elise sets out with Chante in tow to find a way to reverse the curse.
The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has ever played an action-RPG like Legend of Zelda or even Recettear. Elise chops through hordes of enemies that drop money, treasure, magic gems. See, magic works a little differently in this game -- rather than learning spells with MP costs, players pick up magic gems which allow Chante to use magic. Furthermore, gems can be combined by charging up the spell for different effects; for example, two red gems creates a more powerful explosion than one alone.
Aside from that, there's not too much more to say about this game at the moment. It releases this Friday, July 29th on Steam, Gamersgate, and 'other download services'. In the mean time, a temporary site for the game is up, along with a demo. (Saves from the demo will transfer over to the full game, so that's pretty nifty.) If you enjoyed Recettear, or are just looking for a solid action-RPG, it's definitely worth a try.

I'll (hopefully) be updating this thread later this week when the game actually releases with more info, reviews, etc.
I predict incoming boxes, purely because of visual style.

also recettear was great and this will probably be too
Im reminded of Dark Cloud for some reason, And Ragnarok Online for its Sprite characters/3D backgrounds. And thats not a bad thing.
I think i might buy this on steam and try it out. I quite fancy it. I have yet to play much on Recettear due to being busy with stuff. But that was quite awesome.
Oh, one thing I should have mentioned in the OP (which I still can't fix, sorry about that): Chantelise actually predates Recettear. It was the first game EasyGameStation created, I believe -- Recettear was the second, and Fortune Summoners (currently being translated by Carpe Fulgur) was the third.
Edit, so I don't self-bump: Formatting fixed. Also, I'd like to point out that it's currently available for pre-order from Gamersgate for $8.95 (£5.94, €7.19), which is a buck off the normal price. So it's launching cheaper than Recettear to reflect that it's an older game.
Anyone else with a 6000 series AMD card getting a crash on start with the demo?
Looks pretty neat, may check it out.
Bumping because the game just released. Price is $9.99 normally, $8.99 for the first week.

This really reminds me of Dark Cloud.
Why.
Wow, fuck, it's out already and I'm poor as fuck. Welp, looks like someone will have to wait.
Wow, the second boss is a son of a bitch. Just beat him, though.
Also, I feel obliged to point out that you basically need a gamepad for this game. I mean, technically it'd be possible to play with a keyboard, but only in the same way that it'd 'technically' be possible to play Super Meat Boy with a keyboard.
I'll be buying this on monday. Hope the translators did as good a job as they did on recettear.
How long will it be 10% off? I'm having to transfer funds in PayPal and that usually takes around 5-7 days.

Playing SMB with a keyboard isn't that hard :V
Really, the only thing that's really unintuitive in this game without a controller is locking on to enemies.

Too bad I can't find any stores that sell PC controllers around here.
And turning the camera.
Would be nice if you could use the mouse somehow
Looks good, I bought it as soon as I saw it in the Steam news tab, I'll play it eventually, got a huge huge backlog.
Just found a extremely helpful walkthrough. It details how to find all the secret treasures and has plenty of general tips and whatnot.
It's based on the previously translated version of the game, so some of the item names and area names don't quite match up.

For a week from today. After that, it only goes up a buck, so it's not absolutely vital you buy before then.

Wired 360 controllers are the best gamepads, and you can get them from pretty much anywhere. Game stores ought to have a few, and if that fails, there's always Amazon.

Believe me, you're going to want a controller for this game. I guess it wouldn't be all that bad with a keyboard for the first dungeon, and maybe half of the second... but after that, you're going to get frustrated quickly, wrestling with the camera.
I enjoy action jRPGs, some of which are my favorite games. But EGS's character design just turns me away, it's that 'dinky little thing destroying swathes of enemies by brute force' thing.
Everything else, as I have heard, is top notch.
I love this style of game, gonna start now.
Why does Chante kinda look like Recette?
Why does Chante kinda look like Recette?
Probably because EGS draws most of their characters very similarly.
