A simple mob
A Ghost
Sure it sound simple, but put yourself in the situation of your character
you are checking your chests for some wood and you find that your stone is in the wrong chest. nothing big, just move it back and continued. you go down into your mine with your new pick and find a torch missing from the normal way you place them. no biggie, just throw one up. after digging for a while you emerge from the depths to find that your door has been left open. Oh well, better be more careful next time.
At first it would do very discreet things. maybe only one thing a week. after a while you would notice these things. beds become useless, because if you try to sleep you will just wake up in a cold sweat.
After that bigger things would happen. you will be walking in your house and a torch will burst off the wall in front of your face. doors will open and slam when you are not looking and paintings will change. every day it gets worse. windows breaking, doors being knocked down and things going missing from your chest. you ignore it and go back down into your mines, hoping nothing to bad happens while you are away, you begin a new 1x2 pathway into the stone and your torches suddenly all blow out, you quickly throw one on the wall next to you in horror. just in time to see the last stone blocks, filling up the pathway out of your 1x2 hole. you struggle for your pick, but its gone missing and you don't have any way out.
the mob would be really, REALLY rare, and there would be nothing in the patch notes about it.
There should be a chance when you kill a zombie a ghost spawns or something. That would be neat.
I agree, but I'm more of a coward.
Best mob idea, the best mod idea.
Even if there was nothing in the patch notes about it, modders and the like would find the files and spoil it for everyone.
A haunting sounds absolutely delightful. And by delightful I mean terrifying.
Also, would there be any methods of banishing said Ghost? Perhaps using Golden weapons, or perhaps forging some sort of mystical Cold Iron Circle?
Yes, but ghosts scare the feck outta me and it gives me another reason to play peaceful.

A crucifix or some idol would be cool. A totem, maybe?
That's a good idea, but it's a little over the top I think, like Notch is too lazy to ever even imagine an idea as intricate as this, let alone code it. He should just add a simple ghost that can move through wall blocks that are only 1 block thick, or 2 if it's a lighter material like glass or wood. It can posses you (instead of attack, it just makes you walk around uncontrollably-don't fall off of a cliff-and the only way to get rid of it is to jump in water, cause ghosts hate water, or something off the sort).

Ectoplasm, when frozen, becomes Ecto-Balls, which can be used when crafted like this:

And becomes and Ecto-block. Ecto-blocks suck up light within a 20 block radius, and will suck in torches. When broken, all light goes back, and the torches fall out.
Could be used for a quick-getaway or something, hell I dunno.

And ectoplasm itself can be used with water (bucket of water + Ectoplasm in crafting) to make some kind of drink.

This might ruin some adventure maps though.
Sounds like a great idea, but there should be a (Tricky) way of exorcising the ghost. Maybe you require diamond or something similarly rare to do it.

No. It is a good mod idea but it would be terrible for real game play. What is the point? What does it drop? How do you kill it. You described a machinima more than a mob.
If this were added into the game, it would ruin the adventure of minecraft and make it more scripted than anything.
The only thing this would add to the game is negative fun.
This sounds like it would be good for adventure mode, not for survival.
Maybe simplify to a ghost mob which lowers the light level around it and can pass through 1 block thick walls.
it should be released from a dungeon and then follow you on your journey mind fucking you.
Only if we get to craft traps and proton packs.
Maybe a use for Slimeballs or Lapis?
Could be cool if it was toggleable in the options. But even with Ghosts turned on, they were still really, really rare.
And perhaps there could be some way of defeating them, with a craftable Redstone item that was similar to the compass but pointed towards the Ghost.
To expand on the totem idea:
A combination of Glowstone and Lapis Lazuli creates a totem that wards of ghosts for a 256x256x256 radius, and requires another glowstone brick every 10 days. Every day, 15 bricks become unprotected, as it's power goes away.

This might be spooky to read, but would it be fun to play? Going down into your mine to find that a bunch of hostile mobs have spawned where a torch once was, coming back up to your house to find that a few creepers have walked into it through the open door, not being able to skip the long, boring nights, and being trapped in stone without a pickaxe?
And how would you get rid of it?

This is creepy as shit. Its never gonna be added in but its id be a good mod.
I want more flying mobs (non-hostile), and the water mobs we were promised.
The description of what happens seems scary as hell. Especially if the music changes.
