Because i'm bored i decided to post another mod from the minecraftforums, made by lasarus.

ImageToMap is a lightweight and powerful Minecraft map editing tool. It can transform different image formats into a .dat that Minecraft uses for maps. So basically you can use maps as a book for example.
If you have any suggestions, complaints or problems don't hesitate to post them below.

Stupid Facts:
The 7z and zip file contains ImageToMap.exe 56kB and colors.con 753B.
The default xCenter of the maps generated by ImageToMap is 13371337 and zCenter -13371337.
If you click on the window a pixel of id 10 is drawn.
To do list:
1. Custom zoom level when you load an image.
2. Changeable window size.
Tutorial:
To open an existing map drag the file and drop it over the ImageToMap window.
To open an Image drag the image file and drop it over the ImageToMap window.
To save an image right click the window and select "Save".
The maps in Minecraft beta 1.7 is in "%appdata%\.minecraft\saves\<world-name>\data\map_<map-id>.dat".

This could be especially useful for challenge maps, no need for signs telling us to read 'note1.txt'

It's not a mod, it's a tool, it works on versions of minecraft with no mods installed, and in multiplayer, if you give the map to someone else who doesn't have the tool, he will still see the image/text.

The map_x.dat file would need to be uploaded to the server. Been playing around with this and it looks like you can't get the map to show up without restarting the server.
