Hey, I am looking for a good simulation game to delve into. I feel like getting lost in a sandbox whether it be a roguelike, top down RTS, or an FPS. I really have been craving a simulated world/galaxy/universe thing where you live out your life and choose what to do in a massive sandbox open ended game with little to no story, only the one you create as you go.
Now what you guys recommend doesn't have to match my criteria perfectly, but if you can find something that may vaguely imitate what I want to play then that'd be great!
Thanks

ASCII sector is pretty cool for that, so is X3.
Is there no ground combat in X3?
FTL and/or Dwarf Fortress.
Already got FTL, and Dwarf Fortress needs better ASCII art, I haven't really been able to enjoy it.
There's no ground anything in X3, everything is in space, but it has a fully simulated universe, so it seems to me it best meets your criteria. If you get powerful enough you can start smashing up other races' infrastructure and see the effect that has on the economy and the amount of ships roaming around.
You might also like Mount and Blade, the empires make their own decisions and go to war and exchange territory and stuff.
