Shadow Warrior is a bold reimagining of the classic 3D Realms’ shooter from independent developer Flying Wild Hog (Hard Reset) starring the legendary and quick-witted warrior Lo Wang. Combine the brute force of overwhelming firepower with the elegant precision of a katana to annihilate the merciless armies of the shadow realm in an exhilarating and visually stunning transformation of the classic first-person shooter.
This thread is either for the classic game or the remake, whatever works.
Did you mean to create this thread with such little content?
Finished it a few days ago, fucking incredible I say. I think it's a very good start for a first but it has a few things to fix up for a possible sequel.
so is the remake as fun as the original was?

I'll work on it later, I have to go ingame and get some weapon screenshots anyway.
I mainly just wanted to get some sort of thread out for Shadow Warrior discussion since literally no one else on my friends list owns it.
so is the remake as fun as the original was?
No, it's way better. The original Shadow Warrior was an iffy Duke clone, the new one is probably the best of the new wave of "old-school" shooters like Serious Sam, Painkiller, and Hard Reset.
Thank god, somebody finally made a thread.
I thought it was pretty great. The most surprising thing was how long it was. It took me roughly 11 hours to finish, which is extremely impressive for this kind of game.
I think my main issue is that the story got way too serious at the end. The ending felt like it was made for a totally different game. I spent the whole final level waiting for some kind of clever subversive element that never came, and then the credits rolled and I felt a bit empty inside.
Also, I don't like how some weapons are just pure shit until you upgrade them. Upgrades should be about making good weapons better, not making mediocre/shit weapons decent.

Damn really? It took me about 19 hours to finish, also I agree the finale wasn't exactly what I was expecting [sp]especially after Lo Wang was gone with just the Nobitsura Kage and Hoji's Sister just laying there in the credits which I didn't get[/sp].
Also the only "shit" weapon I could say that really needs an upgrade to be good is the uzis, since you can't just use it without akimbo. Also the flamethrower maybe, the grenade launcher is just great.
Anyone want the 10% off Coupon I have for this? It expires the 26th, I don't plan on buying it before then.

The shotgun was basically useless until you got the quad barrel and reload speed upgrades. Two shots, and then take two seconds to reload? Fuck that.
Great game, the weapons were very useless compared to the sword though, only used the akimbo against the boss fights
here are all the retro secrets that I found if anyone else wants to see them. (there are more that I haven't found)

I agree.
edit: Not only does the game have a great sense of humor, it's also quite beautiful.

If you're into this kind of old school shooter, most definitely. It's about 10-11 hours long, and it's very fun to go back and play it again.

Maybe it's just been a long-ass time since I've played an FPS with a good story, but it's the first game in a long while that's felt like a grand adventure to me. I get that excited feeling when I play it that I haven't had since HL2. The characters are also far better than I was expecting. I went in expecting a multitude of dick jokes and not much more but I really like Hoji and Wang.

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt. Granted, it would have felt more like a grand adventure if the levels had a bit more variety, by which I mean, more than just docks, mountain, and town. HL2's variety is part of what made it feel like such an adventure, and Shadow Warrior falls juuuuuust short of that.
And yeah, I was way more into the story than I thought I would be. This is by far the best story any old school shooter has ever had. I just wish it hadn't gotten so overly serious and melodramatic at the end. It should have had a fun, ridiculous ending instead, because that's way more fitting with the tone of the game, and it's something that would make more sense for this kind of shooter.
After finishing this, it only reinforced my biological need for a Blood remake
i've been wishing for a blood remake forever. Blood on the scale of this would be absolutely amazing.
Caleb's one-liners to me are undoubtedly the best any character has ever had. Everybody always cheers on Duke Nukem's lines but apparently they've never seen army of darkness or else they would have known almost all of his lines are blatantly stolen from bruce campbell. not that blood is any better. but calem has far more character
his "I LIVE AGAIN" as soon as you start the game just seals the deal as soon as you start it
Is this as much of a "Hard Reset in Japan" as I'm thinking?
Hated Hard Reset. Extremely linear levels, bulletsponge enemies and a stupid upgrade system (that I heard SW even borrowed).
The trailer looked really similar in gameplay (and it's made by the same dev) which is why I'm put off so hard currently.
yeah. I'm feeling the same vibe. It looks like an exact clone of hard reset (which is good in its own right but the gameplay just ruins it. We're not in the 90s any more) and the only way I can see it being as fun as people are saying it is is because there's a load of dialogue and/or story progression instead of going 15 minutes with just a few one liners are 100 enemies
I'd say Shadow Warrior improves on Hard Reset in every single way. The kills are way more satisfying, and not every enemy is a bulletspongy dickhead. Also, you can actually quicksave and quickload in this game, which is an absolute godsend. And this time, there's a dodge move, so avoiding damage is less of an issue. The main thing that pissed me off about Hard Reset was that you had to just soak up damage and pray that you killed them before they killed you.
Although I don't see how you came to the conclusion that it looks just like Hard Reset from looking at the trailers. It actually looks nothing like Hard Reset, and it plays much better than it. You're in totally different environments fighting totally different enemies with totally different weapons. Slicing dudes into pieces feels way better than blowing up robots.

His voice actor was perfect, his voice was nightmare fuel. I need to try playing the original again some time, haven't played it since like 1998
anyone having frame rate issues with this game or is it just me?
Turn off mirrors, they halve your FPS.
Honestly I don't think the enemies are bullet spongy at all, I beat it on hard first time through and the only ones that felt somewhat spongy were the mini boss creatures.
This game's gameplay was really surprising, I loved it, the levels were nice with all the multiple pathways and exploration, and the story surprisingly kept me interested.
Do you guys have any tips for getting higher combat scores? I usually settle in around 2-3 1/2 stars depending on the fight. I try to mix it up with different moves and chi attacks, but I tend to get hit a lot.
Swap weapons a lot, get headshots, kill multiple enemies with 1 shot, mix it up.
Basically, if there's a weapon or move you aren't using in combat, use it
Then of course dash a lot. Don't bother using sprint, dashing to avoid getting hit works way better.
The only thing i have to complain about this game was that one time where I pressed dash next to a stair case, I bounced off the sloped ceiling, and the momentum caused me to die from the velocity.
I'll put a video up sometime.
Oh, switching weapons helps? That would explain my problem then, I'd generally only use the sword and maybe one gun.
