This is now a mod, you can view Stronghold locations by pressing F3 in-game, both in singleplayer and multiplayer
(these locations will be perfect, you'll always find a Stronghold at the indicated positions, sometimes the game calculates them wrongly for a second so just press F3 a few times to make sure the values don't change, they usually only do if you press F3 while moving)
Instructions:
1. Delete the META-INF folder in the file minecraft.jar
2. Copy the files to the same jar.

Woah that's awesome man. I'ld never have an idea like this :v:
Aww, always ruins the fun of it if you find out all the specifics about the generation. Gets rid of that feeling of mystery and unknown.
Oh god I just noticed it says "Biomes do not exist in the following Biomes" :v:

I saw that too but then I thought that it was intentional
Who am I to blame I know shit all about programming
v:v:v
Could you make it so that it spawns strongholds EVERYWHERE?

I could... look into it :v:
Underground cities everywhere!
I fucking love you for this.
I found one, got lost, and ran screaming from silverfish and endermen. Seems like a useful evening.
Whenever I run the bat file I get this problem.

Shortly after I press a key nothing happens. I'm probably missing something.
GD you're using java on 64 bit and don't have the java environment variable or whatever set.
Rather than remember how to set that I'll just tell you what to do to the .bat file.
Open in some text editor, replace java with
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe"
including the quotes(or a similar path for you)

oh and for me, a stronghold DID spawn in the ocean, just under the ocean floor.

Thanks. This fixed the issue.
They might spawn in those Biomes if the optimal position is in a valid Biome, otherwise they don't.

Silverfish? Why is it I havn't seen one yet?
Silverfish? Why is it I havn't seen one yet?
They're in rocks that look just like stone, when you break it they spawn from the place where it was. They only appear on hard difficulty.

Just getting back to you on that, I checked and the decompiled code has way too many errors for me to bother solving, I'll wait for the Minecraft Coders Pack for 1.8.
As for them being everywhere, I'm not sure if they can go anywhere other than 1200 in each direction for each axis, it's definitely possible although it will be quite a bit more work because the code for Stronghold placement isn't part of world generation but something that is done after.
I'll still look into it, if I can't do that I'll just increase the amount to something ridiculously high, that can be done by erasing the 3 and placing some other number there :v:
So does this work on multiplayer servers, and does it usually have the strongholds spawn below 1000k?
It works based on the seed, if you know the seed of the multiplayer server and the server has a map generated by 1.8 then the program works just as well as it does for singleplayer. And yeah they all seem to be within a 2400 x 2400 block area (1200 in each direction) surrounding the (0, 0) coordinates.
"C:\Program" is not recognized as an internal or external command ...
I keep getting this also on almost any .bat file. Win7 64

Download Java Runtime Environment (32 Bit) and Java Runtime Environment (64 Bit) on a x64 OS.
Oh god thank you for this
It's the best minecraft-related thing since 1.8 <3

Put quotes ("") around the whole path.
So do strongholds ever have above ground entrances? If not, they're gonna be a little hard to find, even with this thing. It doesn't specify an exact location, and digging around randomly will get time consuming.
I have yet to see one that has an above ground entrance, they're all pretty deep. The best thing you can do is use a Cartographer to find them, if you render an underground map, you can see the Strongholds as being a hollow wooden square of sorts.
hey could you change it so it shows the y location of the top stronghold-brick?
MCP 1.8 has been released and I just got home, I'll start working on the next version of Stronghold explorer, which will appear as debug data when pressing F3. I'll also look into some other fun stuff I can make with it, maybe spawning Strongholds on the surface and indicating the y position of the highest block(s), etc. Stuff that modifies the default position or amount of Strongholds will be optional of course.
Nice man.
I'll just leave this here for now, gotta go to sleep but it will be done tomorrow (still some problems with perfect calculation of Stronghold position, just requires time):

Think it can be found using the cave render on dynamap?
This server as example http://66.96.206.204:8123/#
Don't know about that but the mod I'm making works on both singleplayer and multiplayer, right now you have to be near the coordinates for it to inform you if the Stronghold is valid or not and then delete it from the list, but there are some issues with loading chunks on time for that kind of calculation, so when I get home I'll make it so it loads the chunks around the coordinates once, determines which Strongholds are valid and then unloads the chunks, providing an accurate list.
The ability to spawn strongholds would be great since I used a 1.7 save and took a nether portal to 1.8 terrain; meaning there is no possibility of strongholds where I'm at.
