Hi, I'm Matt Blanchard/Jawalt, and I just finished (not really, but it's in a playable state sort-of now. I made this entry for the Ludum Dare Game Jam.) I know it's not much but I wanted it to be played by a few people who are gamers, not programmers, or average Joe. Sincere, blunt, feedback. If the game sucks say it, but give me somehow I can improve it. "It sucks" doesn't help me any. I'm also looking for an artist willing to help me out here. Version 0.sucksless is up with: Complete enemy rebalance. Pong physics redone. The dialogue is trite and childish. Mostly There's no sound. Didn't know that. I'm no writer or artist I'm a programmer, I'd especially like feedback on the pong I'm having trouble making it fun :( [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline] If you guys find this worth continuing, I'll do more, tighen it all up, polish it up, and try to get something going. [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline] Also, don't even try to take this game seriously, it was made to be campy/funny.
You forgot to use a left parenthesis and it's bugging me.
You forgot to use a left parenthesis and it's bugging me.
Right, but ok.
The pong seems broken, on the first bat the ball only flies straight so I can't win or lose...
Move your paddle up or down before it hits, the ball follows the velocity of the paddle it hits. I think perhaps I could fix this by not making the ball rely solely on english and make it bounce off at an angle near the ends of the paddle.
I am, the curve is so slight it makes no difference, bat keeps shooting back straight balls.
And the enemy's strength defines the return x velocity.
I can lose on purpose and that's it
Oh hmm, which OS? Dude we sniped the shit out of each other.
It's keeping the same velocity [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline] Windows 7 64-bit
I noticed the paddle thing, but if you hit the ball with the end of the paddle it bounces off at an angle and the opponent starts moving. It works it's just a bit awkward at the moment. Edit: Ah, I see what was meant about moving the paddle. I am also really really bad at pong and lost to a bat and the game seems to have frozen. Assuming I've died, is something meant to happen or do I just close it and start again?
Found the problem, thanks guys. [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline] For testing purposes to skip the intro press space at the menu.
Here's my criticism. The collision plain out sucks, when you walk, the controls are pretty fluid, but the wall collision is bad, i hate bumping into the same wall three times in a row. Also, while i don't doubt that pong is fun, it's somewhat boring. I imagine if you don't want to scrap the idea completely, then you can at least make it more fun. Once again, the pong paddle collision is crappy, and numerous times the ball went through the paddle. Also, add something new, something that will draw people to your game. Last thing, the grammar is pretty shitty on some parts. Other than that, give it a shot. Maybe you can make it into something people will want to play.
Okay the pong issue was apparently due to me forcing v-sync to be turned off. Turned it on and now when I move the pad as I hit the ball it curves like it should.
Its an interesting mechanic, needs a bit more variation in the enemy's though, instead of just being a game of pong where you have to walk from each of the same to the next. Two things about the Giant Ugly Hunchback, whenever you score (or lose a point) it takes a long time for the name to type itself, which feels a bit too slow. And also, he hits bloody fast, if you just leave the paddles still his shots are about twice as fast, faster than your paddle can move, + he has ten health! Its good though, I laughed at some of the speech and I find the pixelated style great, great for 48 hours, with a bit more time it could be pretty fun (:
I was going to do spells and shit so like the slimes would hit the ball back covered in slime which made it bounce weird as shit. And like fireballs that would kill you if you hit the ball, like shit that'd make combat fun, but I ran out of time. [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline]
Here's my criticism. Collision is pretty bad, I'm thinking about trying to make it 'slidey' so when you hit a wall you keep moving.
I'm enjoying what you've done up to now and I like the ideas you've suggested to add to it, but I'm really struggling to beat the Hunchback, he's so fast I just can't keep up (it could just be that I suck, but I am really having a hard time reaching the ball to return it).

He actually moves his paddle fairly slow, but he hits the ball back TWICE as hard as you do and 4x as hard as bats do.
I think either he needs to return the ball more slowly or the player's paddle needs to move a little faster, I'd probably go with the former though because it currently feels a steep curve up from the other enemies.
Will play the game when you fix the pong physics, y'know, that was done correctly in 1972
Will play the game when you fix the pong physics, y'know, that was done correctly in 1972
If it's that simple you do it :|, the 'pong physics' take a lot of tweaking to get the feel you want. Much more fluid now, and the battle against the Hunchback was actually really fun this time, it was still fast but the whole thing was smoother and it became exciting whittling his HP down :) I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next with it.
Works pretty good, although I've just realized I can't actually see the path (I thought it was a feature but my friend told me that they can see the path). The window is also slightly too large for my netbook screen resolution 1024x600. Here's a screenshot showing both problems.
Uhh, your netbook only supports power of two textures, I think. So I'm going to have to make a version for netbooks with a smaller screen resolution and power of two textures. :D [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline] This is going to take a while, the codebase is a -mess- and relies in some places on windows size ( :( ) but for Chapter 2 the whole thing is getting a rewrite, to support cool new stuff like actual equipment changes, save games, etc. Chapter 2 is going to be Chapter 1 + a bunch of new content, and a rewritten game core for better collision, animations, etc. I'm aiming for 20-30 minutes of playtime. [editline]23rd August 2011[/editline] Is there a way to have the mods change the title to "The Accidental Adventure of Jim" :|
We're getting some musics! Thanks Irtimid!
New version! This one is just a sneakpeak, basically. It's got an original track for the sewers (thanks to Irtimid), and a preview of what I'm doing to the intros. You need Love2d to play this one.
Now it's all white for me :v: damn
Now it's all white for me :v: damn
Mind talking to me on Steam? My info is: <---
I guess I have that 2-texture problem too. My character is apparently a bat, there's no visible walls, and when I get to the Slime my character also turns into a slime. And yeah, the screen goes white initially, djjxbox360, hit space. I'm not on a netbook, but an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop.

Giving me this much info is about as good as "it does not work", sorry guys.
