Imagine flying to the deep reaches in outer space, flying your own spacecraft, controlling every aspect of it AND having realistic space physics.
Well then, welcome to the Orbiter thread!
Okay then so what the fuck is this
If you've played Kerbal Space Program you will love this game! It's basically KSP with 1000x more spaceships, rockets and planets. Yes, you can go to a planet and build an awesome base. You can even fly Space Station Modules up into orbit around earth and build your own space station. The possibilities are endless since there are 1000000 addons and it's very easy to make your own addons.
Sounds cool, but I'm still not convinced. Show me some pictures.

Holy shit this looks awesome, where do I start?
First, download the main client from the website http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/download.html
Then just begin your journey to the stars. Optionally, load your Orbiter will a million of addons for extra fun.
ESSENTIAL ADDONS
[release]
* Orbiter Sound 3.5 - by dan steph - This one is ESSENTIAL because otherwise you won't have any sound in Orbiter
* Universal Mmu (UMMU) - by dan steph
* Deltaglider IV - by dan steph
* All deltagliders by Altea Aerospace
[/release]
The main source of addons is Orbit Hangar, you'll find everything from exoplanets to stars there. http://www.orbithangar.com/
There is no multiplayer, all multiplayer addons have been abandoned
Maybe we could ask the good ol folks at the programming section to code a Orbiter MP mod.

I played the shit out of this.
It's very complicated.
The best bet would be for you to install some kind of warp drive/jump drive if you want to go jet around and sight-see.
Chances are you'll still fail and get lost billions of kilometers out in space though.
Well, this looks like it'll be fun. Time to install, and blow up on the launchpad!
I will be the space master!
Any good guides on how to play this?
Apparently space travel is not as easy as I previously imagined...

The wiki is an awesome resource. There also is an ebook by the name "Go Play in Space".
This looks good, but could you perhaps link to the essential addons you recommend? I'm having trouble finding them on that addon website.
Sweet, another Orbiter thread.

Flew every mission to assemble every component of both stations.

This is how you fly space station modules to the Moon. Saturn V + 4x SRBs = Empire State Booster.

What? Nuclear test ban treaty says I can't fire my Orion drive while I'm in the atmosphere? Well fuck you, I'll just get it out of the atmosphere first.
I wish they continued development on Orbiter MP.

Fuck
Luckily it survived and I was able to place the beacon and shelter I packed in it. Which brought the main ship down with the rest of the supplies

This game is epic. I have played it excessively.
I tried playing this.
It's extremely interesting and well made, but really complex. It's almost a 1:1 simulation of space flight, except you can use instruments that do the math for you.
I played it for about 6 hours straight - counting the ingame tutorial video that lasted 1 hour and I still ask myself why I watched it all - and in the end, I had an insane headache.
If you're the kind of person that doesn't give up when you feel like the dumbest person on earth for not figuring out how something works, definitely try this out. It's really nice, but I'll leave it to you.
Orbiter really feels like rocket science.
Read 'go play in space'.
Also, orbiting roughly is pretty easy, jet upwards til about 40km, click the 'prograde' button, then watch a circle grow on the orbit mfd.
if the circle starts doing wierd things, cut engines and wait til your orbit line is closer to the solid dot.
then start the engines again til you got a full orbit

Don't get discouraged, it takes a while to learn the basics. You are correct, it is a 1:1 simulation of spaceflight with entirely real physics and distances.

Watch this before you give up for good. It provides a step-by-step process for flying the DGIV to the ISS. If you haven't already, go locate and download the Delta Glider IV. It's a good ship to learn on, and includes a suite of built-in autopilot options for ascending to orbit and reentering. Working your way through a basic flight to the ISS will teach you the basics like aligning and syncing orbits.
It feels like I'm really a astronaut.
Edit
God damn is it hard to navigate to download the damn thing.
Havent played it since '06 , how much did it change ?
Going to try it right now.
Everyone trying this out, be warned, this is not something you learn super easily. This is a simulator.
Orbiter will be frustrating for you at first, but when you get the hold of it, it will be fun.
Shit i forgot wich key increases the thrust :v:
After playing this for 4 years non stop, its kinda boring after building a functional base on every planet you can walk on.
Havent played it since '06 , how much did it change ?
It changed a lot since UMMU and UCGO came out back in 2009 - 2010.
You should try it now, it also looks a lot better since everything got new textures.
Also, for the guy that wants less flat planets and more mountains, try Orulex: http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=2686
and download: http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=4433 for collisions with UMMU.
And don't forget to download the heightmaps in the first link or else terrain on Earth and Mars etc will look weird and earth will have craters 'n shit.
Any programmers here? We should make an Orbiter MP mod.

There already is.

If you really want to start with Orbiter, download "Go play in space". It's probably the best tutorial out there.
You can hop out of your spaceship now?
You can hop out of your spaceship now?
Many addon ships simulate crews, so if you have a docking port you can select crew members and order them to go EVA. The suited crew members are separate vessels, so you can switch to them and walk around or maneuver in zero-g.
Oh, there is an Orbiter Multiplayer addon. EVERYONE DOWNLOAD IT AND LETS START AN FP FLIGHT!
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/fporbiter/
Made a group.
I'll probably make one.
I'll probably make one.
