Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.
In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.
Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.
Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.
Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content (this really had me laughing when I encountered this in game), and strong language. Please enjoy.

Oh it's the game where a mad person tries to cut off your dick?
That first image looks so fucking creepy.
Game looks fucking sick, can't wait to try it.
So is it actually good?

If awful pacing and jumpscares are your thing, go for it.
I watched someone stream it from the beginning and it only took them a minute to reach the very first jumpscare, and after that they only got more predictable.

So, kind of like Amnesia?
cool

horror games aren't meant to be watched, sorry for the bluntness but i fucking hate when people are like "oh i watched X game and it wasn't even scary huhuhu". games are designed to be played, and that's the only way you'll experience them properly.
it's actually quite deftly paced. it does opt for jumpscares a little too often at times, but the fact of the matter is, jumpscares are a totally legitimate tool of horror. people like to decry them as being cheap or easy, but only bad jumpscares are cheap or easy and the ones in this game are usually pretty good.
How long is it?

It may just be the beginning section that's really badly done because the stream I watched played up until the [sp]basement where you have to turn the power back on[/sp] and there had been way too many jumpscares in a short burst before he just gave up and bugged the ai out by vaulting over a banister.

"Oh no a dying guy in a wheel chair is he gonna jump me when I go back that way oh he is o h n o waaaaah"
So is it actually good?
in my opinion, not really the best out there. I'm about 3 hours in and I'm really disappointed by how it turned out to be. it's not really that scary, more of a "complete somewhat similar objectives while avoiding one patrolling enemy" game. might just be me who expected a lot more since it got good reviews and stuff
I think it's really good, there are a few jump scares near the start, but later on it gets properly creepy and atmospheric. And the played movement is extremely well done, there are lots of cool little things about it like your character putting his hand out on a corner when you're leaning around it.

how far into it are you?
how far into it are you?
I'm at the female ward right now
The only thing I don't like about this game is the regenerating health system. It kinda takes the suspense out of some of the "have to avoid this dude to get to a specific room" sneaky situations when you can get hit twice, run away and just be a-okay.
Amnesia didn't have this problem because you had to manage your health, and just one hit from an enemy you could be fucked in the next encounter if you couldn't heal yourself.
This is so fucking scary. Played it for 15-20 minutes and it scared the shitt out of me. Really good horror game!
at the risk of getting spoiled, does the time spent recording have any bearing on anything or is it purely cosmetic?
cuz i don't really see a reason for not running around with the camcorder up considering you're there to record everything you see :v:
How long is the game, exactly? How long have you guys been playing for?

How is a corpse falling out of a closet going "OOGA BOOGA" accompanied by a loud noise at a random point in the intro without any sort of buildup a legitimate tool of horror?
It's cheap, and it was done far too early in this game; I wasn't absorbed in the atmosphere enough nor did it actually instill any sort of fear in me. I jumped, sure, but the only thing I was afraid of after that was another painfully deafening jumpscare after that.

It's approximately 5 hours.
I just feel like the story is very bad. The gameplay is okay. It really just makes you wish that you could have some kind of weapon, because I really don't understand why you can't use one. It would've made the game better, because the running away and hiding thing gets old really fast. It gets predictable very quickly.
I finished it and can honestly say that it's 1000x times better than Amnesia.
It may have some jumpscares (I love them) but they are quickly replaced by chases and other unique mechanics that I have yet to see in any another horror game in the last few years.
It's a bit short, but it's definitely worth the price.

Having a weapon in a horror game almost instantly makes it MUCH MUCH less scary IMO
I really like one specific difference between outlast and other horror games; inmates are unpredictable.
In other horror games you just run if anything moves/makes a sound. In outlast you can happily waddle around in front of inmates, and they'll talk to you, some may slap you for getting too close, and most just don't care...
...until you complete some objective.
Seriously, horror games (all games really but horror in particular) need to fuck off with that. It's been done to death, and it's incredibly uncreative game design.
There's one room in particular that's entirely optional to explore, and doesn't even have any documents or such. The only reason to go into that room, is curiosity, and perhaps to search for more batteries.
And going into that room triggers a nice little scare, just because.
That's innovative. Nobody expects that to happen, when there's nothing special in that room. In fact, when it happened to me, I didn't even want to leave the room, because I was terrified of what might be outside.
And there's just one single room like that. I haven't found anything else like it since. Why not? Why am I not being scared shitless for exploring, or "just because"? I paid for a horror game, not a "first person flip switch/press button/turn valve/etc to get scared" simulator.
Progress scares are so old and dull. Ever since I made it through the generator restarting part, I just look around for lockers when I'm at a point of progress.
If there 'just happen to be' lockers, I press the button and hide in the locker. Lo and behold, a psycho will storm into the room literally 3 seconds after.
Also after the first few encounters with hostile inmates, it gets really dull. You run faster, and if you close a door in front of them they somehow go "HOW I DOOR??" and spend 5 seconds literally breaking down the door, only to forget about your existence, walk off, and casually unlock, open, close, and re-lock a door on the way out.

Well, let's say you could use a weapon.
But if you saw this:

Would you really want to try to fight that thing?
I just finished the [sp]outdoor area[/sp], and I must say that this and the [sp]large open room in the sewers[/sp] have been the only good scares for me.
[editline]6th September 2013[/editline]
[sp]mostly because you can barely see anything and I always had the feeling that that ghost thing could appear anywhere, so I kept looking behind me and shit. that's how it should feel throughout the entire game, you should feel chased and watched.[/sp]
[editline]6th September 2013[/editline]
[sp]oh and, they've literally only placed hiding spots where enemies will appear, so you can easily predict when a chase or something is going to happen... really lame[/sp]

Have you played Metro Last Light?
This game keeps surprising me, the trailer made me think that it's filled with cheap jump scares and screamers and that's all. But it's actually pretty good. I'm at the showers currently (lol those two dudes)
Have you played Metro Last Light?
God damn I still remember that fucking room in the tunnel where you push the train, completely optional, even easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but if you go in there it's one of the scariest moments in the game.
Talk about rewarding exploration.
must say that it gets a little scarier now

I hated the curiosity in me at that point.
How does the camera work in this game? It looks really awesome and spooky.
