Quick Question: Do you have to be connected to PSN to get game updates?

At my University, I can connect my PS3 to the internet however due to the way the university network is set up, I cannot sign into PSN even though the Playstation has a perfect connection to the internet. Are game updates only checked and downloaded if you are connected to PSN?

I believe so, but if a game requires a system update to play, such as Uncharted 3, it is usually is included on the disc. The game updates likely require a PSN connection to download, though.
