Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a rogue-like, as you might have guessed. It has a graphics version, which in my opinion is better than the ASCII version, which sets it apart a bit from other rogue-likes. But that doesn't make it any less brutal, oh no. Whether you get smited by that Orc priest, get mobbed by Wargs, or fall to the terrible Sigmund, you will die. A lot. But it still is quite fun. You get to choose from a lot of races, and then get to pair your race with a class, of which there are also a lot of. This makes for some fun combination's. Ever been a Mountain Dwarf Transmuter who can turn into a giant spider and eat that goblins face? Probably not. There is also a ton of gods, such as Trog, Makhleb, Vehumet, Nemelex, Okawaru, and more. --TIPS-- There are some race/class combos that are easier than some others. Such as: Deep Dwarf Necromancer of Makhleb: These guys are pretty good. Although you can't heal by resting as a Deep Dwarf, being a Necromancer negates that. You start with a spell named Pain, which does decent damage, and once you've leveled up a bit you can (and should) get the spell Vampiric Draining which lets you drain health from your foes! Then once you get the spell Dispel Undead, you can take on a lot of things fairly nicely. Troll Berserker of Trog: (I haven't actually tried this, but here is what the CrawlWiki says): Trolls have high HP, fast regeneration, and vicious claws. Berserk makes this a great combo for reliably clearing the early game, which is a good place to start for a new player. High Elf Wizard (Flame) of Vehumet: (Haven't tried this yet. Wiki info): Magic Dart is a great starting spell, and Mephitic Cloud makes the early and mid-game a lot easier. Once Vehumet starts gifting books, you should be able to take out almost anything. Spriggan Enchanter of Nemelex: These guys are good. Once you get the spell Encorcelled Hibernation, you can basically put things to sleep and go stabby stabby. Then there is Confuse, one of my favorite spells. This one lets you confuse monsters. A lot. You can actually cause them to die by confusing them so much they hit themselves. Once you get Confuse and Encorcelled Hibernation you can take out a fair bit of monsters quite easily. Sleepy Sleepy, stabby stabby, or confusy-fusy, stabby stabby. Merfolk Crusader of Okawaru: (Okay, I haven't tried this class either. Wiki says): You can steamroll things once you can cast Berserker Rage. Okawaru is a simple god who gives weapon/armour gifts and the ability to use Might and Haste whenever you want. --- Another tip: If you are a spell caster, don't wear heavy armor. It hurts your success rates of casting a spell, bad. --- A final tip: Beware of Sigmund (This guy: ) . He will fuck your day up. He is the Raper of dreams, Destroyer of players, the stuff of nightmares. --RELEVANT LINKS-- Download and Blog and all that stuff: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/ CrawlWiki: http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=CrawlWiki So lets get crawling!

Amazing game to play while killing time in a class.
Seems pretty cool.
Probably my second favorite roguelike, behind NetHack. Really awesome, and really user friendly, so it's (sort of) a good entry point for roguelikes. "Sort of" because it's one of the hardest roguelikes out there, I think.
looks p cool, downloading now. [editline]7th November 2010[/editline] so I'm doing the tutorial, and I reached a translucent wall I can't go past. [editline]7th November 2010[/editline] oops, nevermind. [editline]7th November 2010[/editline] oh, I died.
You need a certain spell, Dig, to get past translucent walls.
Seems awesome. Gonna try it now.
I love this game so much, I've probably killed around 40 hours playing this game. The one god that gives you decks of cards (can't remember his name) is awesome. Those always saved my ass.
I believe that the card god is Nemelex. However, being the newblie person I am I have not yet gotten a god except for characters that start with one.
Great game, one of my favorite roguelikes, IVAN is another great one.
this has always been my favourite dungeon crawl, even before the stone soup variant came up. I could never get into nethack as much as this one. but then again, I hardly ever make it past the first dungeon branch. :I
Bumping because I wanted to post about stonesoup so no point in making a new thread. Thus far my most successful character has been a TrTM (troll transmuter) I quite like the transmuter class and playing as a troll offers a great deal of survivability which casters (especially transumters) lack. I finally died when descending into a sub-dungeon, which to my glee had shops!! (trolls don't use weapons so all magical weapons are just gold that take up inventory space), but yeah the sub dungeon. Just a shit ton of orcs. Now I don't know if you're aware but a transmuter uses mana to turn corpses into potions, and then a spell called evaporate which super heats the potion. Then the transmuter throws the fucking potion up to 5 squares, on impact a 3x3 cloud of gas causes magical effects. So yeah, I threw out some poison (you can transmute kobolds into your favourite potion) and some confusion (orcs and humans oh my) to mitigate the damage a bit, after ripping apart seceral orcs I settled in to start extracting potions and eating bodies. Then the orc in plate armor (which had run away in confusion) ran up and bonked me with a magical mace. It's worth noting that I worshipped slow god because confusion potion makes targets helpless (they just sort of move randomly) which mitigates most of the disadvantages of being slow. The massive HP + regeneration of a troll does the rest. Also trolls have a REALLY fast metabolism, and often I'd need to eat bodies instead of making potions. God of slow (after obtaining a lot of favour) will slow down your metabolism (eventually never age or eat fuck ya). Also he blesses your armor for free, and magical robes are hard to find. So yeah I like being slowwwwww. What characters do you guys like? I ripped the DDCK from the top of the scoreboard, it's super easy mode :|
Bumping because I wanted to post about stonesoup so no point in making a new thread.
Sorry but you bumped a completely wrong thread. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1123235
I searched Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and this was the first thread that came up in the search. So clearly your thread is wrong.
Except that mine is two moths old and this one is a year old.
This is page one, first relevant thread after a search.
Except that mine is two months old and this one is a year old.
So you admit that you posted a redundant thread instead of appending your post to the end of the proper thread? Good to know bro. Clearly you care more about people thinking you created a thread devoted to a roguelike rather than caring that people know about and have fun with the roguelike.
So you admit that you posted a redundant thread instead of appending your post to the end of the proper thread? Good to know bro.
You're hilarious. No, it wasn't redundant, a moderator (Dragon) asked Crawl players to make a new thread for 0.9 version that just came out back then, and that's what I did. What you did here can actually be classified as a bad case of necromancy. I cut the offtopic here anyway.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
