Nethack is a rogue-like video game based off of Hack. Nethack, aside from Rogue, is the most well-known rogue-like game, and many people consider it their favorite.
Nethack, like most rogue-like games, is an insanely tough game in which you are expected to die, and die often. Seriously, this isn't Call of Duty, you will die multiple times, and it is extremely difficult to beat this game. Along with this difficulty, you have a concept not in most modern games called permadeath, in which once you die, you must start over with a fresh save, and the only thing you carry over is the knowledge you learned.
This game is pretty difficult to learn, but once you understand and use the control scheme, it will be second nature.

There are a few ways to play this wonderful game.
The most recommended way, at least in my case, is to use telnet to connect to the actual server for it. You do this by going into command prompt/terminal and typing "telnet nethack.alt.org". You must have a telnet client installed on the computer. Linux and XP have it by defult, but look for tutorials online to install it on Vista or 7. The telnet version has color text, saving files on the web server (Just access your account from anywhere to pick up your game), watching/spectating games (complete with sending scrolls to the player! [m]), and general bugfixes.
If you don't want to use telnet, or can't, just download it here.
I hope to see you all on the telnet server, and you can find me by going to the spectate section, scrolling down or up, and looking for "chezhead".

Goodbye Chezhead the Priestess...
You were poisoned in The Dungeons of Doom on dungeon level 1 with 141 points,
and 125 pieces of gold, after 280 moves.
You were level 1 with a maximum of 14 hit points when you were poisoned.

You always have to bet when eating things, never sure if they are tainted.
Seriously, this isn't Call of Duty
It would be incredible difficult to confuse an ASCII roguelike with Call of Duty.

Well neither upgrade their graphics game after game!
I came into this thread expecting something akin to uplink. Oh well.
NetHack was my first roguelike. Fond memories.
Or maybe not so fond since I died so much, but I grew to love it over time. :v:
nethack is an unbelievably deep game. i seriously have sunk more time into this game than any other, and i haven't even ascended yet. :(
Coolio. I saw this a while ago. Thanks for the links.

I've easily spent hours upon hours playing it and, while I can't remember exactly, I don't think I've ever even made it past floor 20 or so. :v:

Valkyrie is a good starting class if your looking to try this game out.
Also, http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
FYI i usually play as a dwarven valkryie or an elven ranger
oh yeah, a recent death was when a nymph ended up stealing my sword and i couldn't find it again and i had already thrown my dagger, so i had to punch everything.

also [sp]cockatrice or chickatrice[/sp] corpses are god tier weapons
This is how my first game went.
Oh cool I can ride my pony, now I will kick this door and leave the first room.

Oh god.

why i don't like knights all that much is because i can't kick down doors.
another tip, try to get [sp]a lockpick, a credit card or a skeleton key[/sp] as soon as possible because [sp]kicking down doors attracts monsters[/sp]. [sp]a rogue starts with a lockpick and a tourist starts with a credit card. BTW, credit cards can't be used to buy stuff, just to open doors.[/sp]
i'm putting this all in spoiler for people who want to figure it out themselves
[editline]21st July 2011[/editline]
also, try to move diagonally as much as possible, it saves A LOT OF TIME.
[editline]21st July 2011[/editline]
also, when it says "The door resists!" that doesn't mean it's locked. just try to open it again.
[editline]21st July 2011[/editline]
[sp]if you name an elven dagger Sting, or an elven broadsword Orcist, they turn into artifact weapons that deal double damage to orcs and tell you where all orcs are on the floor you are on. Very useful if you're playing elven ranger.[/sp]
[editline]21st July 2011[/editline]
if you [sp]dip a longsword into a fountain when you're lawful and above level 5, it makes excalibur.[/sp]

Pressing n-20-s in that order will make you search 20 times.

which takes 20 turns

which means that a newt can come and fuck your shit up

This has killed me more often than I'd like to admit. Don't do this.
speaking of newts, aren't they yellow dots on NAO?
I play with the X11 tileset version because I'm a gay baby.
Hmm, I think I should try this soon, I was spectating some guy, but he got killed pretty fast, wasn't paying attention because of the ASCII, which is pretty much indecipherable for me.
Also, what does this game have to do with networks and/or hacking?
FYI, we just started a NetHack and Forks tournament this weekend that is being played on all the major public servers (of course including http://nethack.alt.org/).
The tournament website page is http://junethack.rawrnix.com/.
Also, what does this game have to do with networks and/or hacking?
It's "hack" in the D&D sense. Hacking on monsters to kill them.
It's "net" because it has been developed over the Net at a time when this was special. Yes, the origins of this game date back a looooong time.
i'm hopefully about to finish my 6th ascension
Just the other day I searched for a past Nethack thread, I was disappointed. Good to see we finally have one.
Now, Nethack time, and to think I was planning on going to bed.
Edit: Oh yes, wand of sleep!
Edit 2:The Sleep Rays hits The Water Nymph, The Sleep Ray Bounces, The Water Nymph has stolen Wand of Sleep.

you shouldn't be eating kobold corpses regardless. even when they're fresh they're poisonous
Spent a hour reading the wiki. The game is so fucking complex. Also I think I played this few years back. I can remember trying to kill the pet dog and failing to kill even one enemy.
I've only gotten to level 3... :(
I love my kitten, and go on a revenge-fueled killing spree whenever my pet is killed.
My kitten was just so badass!
I've been playing an OBSCENE amount of this game lately so I thought I'd give this a friendly bump.
