What's the difference? The origin, not the way in which they're used, and honestly the origin shouldn't matter THAT much. If someone gets upset over Memes in general fine, if they're getting upset over a specific type of Meme just because of the source it comes from, grow up. Then again facepunch has made it ban worthy for many such other overly used memes, and I do understand that the MLP macros were being spammed beyond reason, but I don't see this much hate over people who copy paste Lol cats over and over and over, even if it was banned from the forums for getting used too damn much.
