I'll start off by saying that yes, I do know it's actually called Might and Magic: Heroes VI, but most know it by the old name and will most probably continue to call it so (therefore until this is released I think most people will respond with more interest to the old name than the new one). Heroes of Might and Magic VI (which I'll refer to as Heroes 6) is the sixth (surprising huh?) instalment of the HoMM franchise. It's developed by Black Hole Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. I'm going to assume you are familiar with the gameplay style and concepts of the HoMM franchise, if not:
The Heroes series is within the genre of turn-based strategy. The titular heroes are player characters who can recruit armies, move around the map, capture resources, and engage in combat. The heroes also incorporate some role-playing game elements; they possess a set of statistics that confer bonuses to an army, artifacts that enhance their powers, and knowledge of magical spells that can be used to attack enemies or produce strategic benefits. Also, heroes gain experience levels from battle, such that veteran heroes are significantly more powerful than inexperienced ones. Whenever a player engages in battle, the game changes from the adventure map display to a combat screen, which is based on either a hexagonal or square grid. In this mode, the game mimics the turn-based tactics genre, as the engaged armies must carry through the battle without the opportunity to reinforce or gracefully retreat. With few exceptions, combat must end with the losing army deserting or being destroyed, or paying a heavy price in gold to surrender. Surrendering allows the player to keep the remaining units intact.
Story: Chronologically the game takes place 400 years before HoMMV, and tells the story of the Griffin Dynasty. The game will be told through the eyes of 5 siblings left to contend for the throne, and each of them will be representing a faction. What's new in Heroes 6? Well, quite a lot really: [release] Resource System
There are only 3 resources now, 2 basic ones (Wood and Ore) and 1 special resource (crystallized dragonblood). On top of that there is Gold, of course.

There is now an "area of control" around forts and towns, that means that all mines and dwellings that have been flagged once can only be taken if the enemy takes the fort/town. This means that a lone hero with 1 pixie won't be able to steal all your mines anymore. Heroes can block mines, but they have to remain on it to block it, once they leave it goes back to normal.
Factions and units
There are 5 factions, which have been revealed to be Haven, Necropolis, Inferno, Sanctuary and Fortress, each with their own playstyle.

Each town will have 3 core units, 3 elite units and 1 champion unit.

No more welfare dragons (AKA every faction has a dragon).

The fifth faction will be new to the series (and going by some artworks, it might be Nagas).

Units will not be able to move around without a hero.

Factions will not have Dragons anymore, instead Dragons will be bosses and such.
Heroes, Magic, skills and items
Heroes will now have a tree-like development, no more randomness in the two skills/abilities you can choose.

There are 7 schools of magic: Air, Fire, Earth, Water, Light and Darkness and the Primordial Magic.

There have been hints that old and legendary heroes of the franchise like Sandro and Crag Hack might make a return.

Heroes can be customized with sex, name and might or magic orientation, though there will most probably still be "premade" heroes.

There will be artefact sets.

Heroes can now unlock advanced "classes" that will give them a different look and an ultimate ability.

There are no primary and secondary skills nor perks and such, instead abilities are unlocked with ability points.

Magic is now an ability too, so you won't go to magic school or such to learn the individual spells, instead you will gain them by unlocking the ability tree.

Depending on Reputation (not sure what that is yet), the hero can choose three directions: Life, Death and Neutral. Each direction has it's own advanced class.

Due to the above, all factions will have 6 special classes since Heroes can be either Might or Magic, then specialize in one direction and gain a special class (the special classes unlocked by a Magic hero will be different from the ones of a Might hero).

Magic has been weakened to make it on par with Might. No more Magic heroes annihilating a Might heroes' army in one spell.
Towns
Towns can now be converted to another faction, so you could capture a Haven town and convert it to Necropolis (the conversion will be expensive and take several turns though).

Towns will have a fully animated 2D townwindow (townwindow, not screen), following the complaints that the 3D screens in HoMM5 didn't feel right (and took a toll on performance).

Towns will upgrade visually, so if you build a wall it will appear from the adventure map, not only in the townscreen.
Artstyle
As you probably have already noticed, they dropped the cartoony shapes of HoMMV and have gone after a more realistic approach (but still plentiful in colours where they are needed).

The developers say that while HoMMV was more cartoony, HoMMVI will be more like a comic book.
Combat
Combat has gone back to the old initiative system of HoMMIII, with some improvements.

The combat arenas will be dynamic and varied, no more bland squares with some background. For example the area could periodically flood with water, or lava. Even weather may affect units, but that's random.

Bosses have been introduced, they will be huge (larger than 2x2) monsters that will spice things up.

Combat arenas will also have different topographies, like different sizes and different shapes (so not always square).

There will be different combat objectives, for example you could be tasked to defend X shrine or kill X enemy stack. These combat objectives will most probably not be in normal open-field battles (more likely in campaign or special conditions).
Sieges
You will now be able to garrison long-ranged units in towers/fortifications.

All units can damage fortifications now, but their effectiveness will vary and will be a lot less effective than siege machines.
Multiplayer
Hot-Seat has been confirmed, it's in the game.
Editor and mods
According to the FAQs, there will be a map editor, and if it's done in time, it might even be released before the game itself.

It will use triggers, a bit like the WC3 editor, so if you want to you can make a map without writing a single line of code.

It's their objective to make modding the game easy.

They have an UI in place to activate and deactivate mods.
[/release] Faction units: [Release]Haven: C Core: Sentinel/Praetorian, Crossbowman/Marksman, Sister/Vestal Elite: Sunrider/Suncrusader, Griffin/Imperial Griffin, Radiant Glory/Blazing Glory Champion: Seraph/Celestial Necropolis: C Core: Skeleton/Skeletal Spearman, Ghoul/Ravenous Ghoul, Ghost/Spectre Elite: Vampire/Vampire Lord, Lich/Arch-Lich, Lamasu/Putrid Lamasu Champion: Fate Spinner/Fate Weaver Inferno: C Core: Hellhound/Cerberus, Succubi/Lilim, Maniac/Demented Elite: Tormentor/Lacerator, Juggernaut/Ravager, Breeder/Mother Breeder Champion: Pit Fiend/Pit Lord Fortress: C Core: Mauler/Crusher, Harpy/Fury, Goblin/Goblin Hunter Elite: Centaur/Marauding Centaur, Dreamwalker/Dreamreaver, Jaguar Warrior/Panther Warrior Champion: Cyclops/Enraged Cyclops Sanctuary: C Core: Shark Warrior/Shark Captain, Kappa/Kappa Shoya, Coral Maiden/Pearl Maiden Elite: Spring Spirit/River Spirit, Snow Maiden/Ice Maiden, Wave Warrior/Tide Warrior Champion: Kirin/Cloudwalker Kirin [/release] I'll add more as they release more info. Also those marked with a "C" are 100% confirmed. Trailer: Gameplay: Well Ubi evidently thinks it's a good idea to not release official video footage of the game yet (yes there are leaked videos but those are still very early). If you want even more details, head over here. There you can find all possible details that have been released (which I thought would be a bit excessive for this thread as it would be boring to a non-hardcore fan). I'll add more stuff to this OP when more news are released. There are two different pre-order versions with similar pre-order bona (yes that's the plural of Bonus). Here they are: Boxed Collector's Edition (Ubishop): Digital Deluxe edition (Steam, GamersGate and such): - Soundtrack. - Artbook/Poster. - One month subscription on Heroes Kingdom. - 1 Bonus Single Player Skirmish Map. - 4 Dynasty Heroes : Aguirre, Sveltana, Yume and Kraal. - 2 Dynasty Weapon : Staff of Cleansing and Staff of Asha’s Eightfold. - Edge of Chaos (item) and Akasha (hero), note that these are only if pre-ordered The game is slated for the September 2011 exclusively on PC (no Mac version at launch, not planned at least). There will be a Beta by the end of June 2011 and the easiest way to get in is pre-ordering from Ubishop.
Heroes 1 was ok. Heroes 2 was amazingly fun, Heroes 3 was even better, heroes 4 was bad, heroes 5 was better then 4 but still not better then 3 or 2. I wonder where this will appear on the heroes list.

They are also working closely with the fans so that should help.
The only thing I really liked about Heroes 4 was the soundtrack, the rest of the game was so vastly different to all the earlier ones in the series it just didn't click with me. Heroes 3 is still number 1 in my book. I hope this one will be great as well.
Went downhill after heroes 3
The only thing I really liked about Heroes 4 was the soundtrack, the rest of the game was so vastly different to all the earlier ones in the series it just didn't click with me. Especially the first time I played, I sat there checking through the factions for 10 minutes thinking "Where's the Necropolis? Or Inferno?", then I found that horrible Infernopolis. Felt like picking up a playboy model only to find out that it's a he and has a dick once you are in bed.

I pretty much felt the same way. Honestly though, the soundtrack was fantastic. It's the only really good part of that game in my opinion. A sample if anyone wants. Yeah the soundtrack was pretty good, and HoMMVI seems to have an awesome soundtrack as well: Also I added the trailer to the OP.
Yes! I've played all except 1. 3 was one of the best games I had back then but 4 wasn't so appealing. 5 was great actually and 6 seems like it will be like a "remake" of 3 and keep that style. Hoping for a nice finished product
I loved 5. But 3 is still my favorite.
Also 4 had horrible townscreens. We went from this in 3: To this in 4: Though I thought the screens in HoMMV where pretty good (although the Necropolis' one sucked a bit, but that was also me not really liking the new Necro style), but if we get high-quality 2D screens in HoMMVI it's even better.
I'll probably buy this because I used to love 2. I've heard 3 is great but never played it
I'll probably buy this because I used to love 2. I've heard 3 is great but never played it
That's really sad dude, the third game was a masterpiece. I probably give this a try, as long it's better than 4 & 5, I'm satisfied.
Man. I used to love 4. And 3. And 2. The best thing about them all was the campaign editor. I'd spend weeks just making levels and things. Hell. One of those campaigns is where I got my name from. Great times.
When i was 8 my friend gifted me with heroes III and it was amazing. I liked it so much, that it becomed my favourite game of all times! I still have it, and yesterda i've seen all 3 parts of Heroes III in local shop. I think, i gonna buy it.

Most of those changes I either like or I'm fine with, but I'm not so sure about the resources. I'd prefer more factions though, but I guess five is fine if they are well-balanced.
I've never owned a Heroes of Might and Magic game, but I have played the 2nd, 3rd and 5th at friends and I thought it was so god damn awesome. I really need to pick this up when it comes out!
The 4th one disappointed me so much i didn't buy the 5th, is it any good?
Well it's all opinion, but yeah it's considered to be pretty good. It's much more similar to Heroes 3 than 4, personally I think it's either the third best, or maybe even the second best (but I haven't played Heroes II in a long time so I can't decide). I don't know how much it costs, but I'd say it's definitely worth it (with the two expansions). The only thing that felt kind of disappointing in 5 was the artstyle (too cartoony), and the Necropolis (which was my absolute favourite in 3, but I found it "meh" in 5). [editline]16th October 2010[/editline]
Most of those changes I either like or I'm fine with, but I'm not so sure about the resources. I'd prefer more factions though, but I guess five is fine if they are well-balanced.
Yeah I'm not really sure about them either, but they said that the reason was that certain factions would only really need a lot of one resource, and therefore once you had enough of it you wouldn't really care about the others (which is true, happened all the time for me). I would have preferred if they opted to make factions need a bit of all resources, but I see how that could have been difficult to balance and a pain in the ass. [editline]16th October 2010[/editline]
I've never owned a Heroes of Might and Magic game, but I have played the 2nd, 3rd and 5th at friends and I thought it was so god damn awesome. 2D town screens? What is it? 2005?
Heroes 3 was fucking awesome I never played any other from the series, but I found screens and they looked terrible
2D town screens? What is it? 2005?
More like 1998 since HoMMV was released in 05 (I think) and had 3D screens. I'm ok with both really, but I have a feeling that high quality (and definition) 2D can capture a feeling that 3D can't without going either cartoony, or very detailed (with subsequent higher requirements). Though 3D allows for a more "whoa" effect I must say (like the Haven in 5 with the huge citadel in the middle). It's also true that the "whoa" effect wears off after a while.
Updated OP, added some stuff to what's new, 2 leaked gameplay videos and more images.
Heroes 3 was the best one. Period. REALLY doubt this'll be better.
I already posted a thread about this months ago, yours have more content though.
The Necromancer units are always the same, Zombie,Skeleton,Vampire and Lich or some sort of Necromancer. Still looking forward to this.
I already posted a thread about this months ago, yours have more content though.
I hate search being down :argh:
The Necromancer units are always the same, Zombie,Skeleton,Vampire and Lich or some sort of Necromancer. Still looking forward to this.
Yeah it's pretty predictable, it will probably be something along the lines of: Core: Skeleton, zombie and some kind of spectre Elite: Vampire, Liches and Dark Knights (but DKs will probably not be in, seems that Sphinxes are in instead) Champion: Either skeletal dragon or spider woman thing
