The Steam Holiday Sale is on now through Sunday, January 1, 2012. In addition to huge savings throughout the store, the 2011 sale features two special promotions that allow you to win like never before.
The Great Gift Pile challenges gamers to complete up to six objectives each day. Completion of each objective grants the chance to win a free game or discount coupons for select games available on Steam. If you don’t win, no worries, you’ll be given a piece of coal. But hold onto that coal!
Why?
Coal is the ticket to enter the Epic Holiday Giveaway. It’s called Epic because the top prize is every game on Steam. The more coal you have, the better your chance of winning. Players may alternatively choose to magically mix their coal into something shiny and new by “crafting” seven pieces into a gift from the Great Gift Pile. So this year receiving coal is a good thing.
Didn’t get what you want? Of course Steam allows you to trade coal and prizes with your friends.
Further details on these events and information on how it’s progressing may be found here.
Complete information on all the savings, daily deals, featured publisher game packs, compilations and more may be found on www.steampowered.com.
Protip(s):
1. Do not buy any games until the last day, wait to see if it is in a daily deal.
2. Don't spend all your money, you'll probably need it for other things.
3. Your friends would probably like if you got them some gifts.

Time to play more obscure indie games i never heard of and get addicted to them.
Another time for me to enter a Steam competition and win nothing.
The achievements are pretty easy for the most part. The only one that I know could be annoying to do is the Binding of Isaac one as it seems to be a random event inside of another random event that you can only access after beating a difficult boss.
It has some good games that are part of it too, like Killing Floor and Rock of Ages (the latter hasn't gotten enough exposure if you ask me).
One person will get every game on Steam... that's like my ultimate dream.
I don't like how we have to choose between small gifts and entries in the giveaway.
I tried doing the Spiral Knights achievement but it would never find me a team.
I also had to restart Bastion, erasing my save file, to do its achievement.
But it's not too hard.

Third prize is fairly crappy.
Lots of people got the Golden Potato, me being one.
it's still good to have, portal 2 is still fairly new and i gave most of my extra copies to people already.
i'd rather wait to know the details in the official announcement, because there's that weird coal thing and i'm wondering if there will be a prize for people who get all the achievements like last time or if it'll be crappy like with the tickets.
Well, I've gotten eight so far, still need to get the AaAAaaAAAA!! one.
Mother of GOD
i hope that includes all railworks DLCs
Fuck this. I can barely get 3 of these achieves and I'm in no position to buy any of the games.
What's this game though?

Added to OP.
I wonder how you get coal since playing the games seems to give gifts (which contain coupons and probably some cheap games like Alien Breed 2?)
If that's even what this really is and not some person just making shit up
Well for now, all I can get is the CS:S, DoD:S, KF, TF2, and Payday ones. The rest... I really don't think I'll be buying them. Having all the games I've ever wanted would be great, but buying games to have a greater chance to win isn't really going to help me win. *Sighs*
OH WELL!
Is Steam down for maintenance again?
looks like im only going to be able to get 4 tickets, points whatever
...Well, shit.

I counted 38 Achievements in the Steam thread I could possibly get, if they're not too hard.
so far i got 21 games on that list, not counting free 2 play.
if the reward is a hat you'd guys better buy every game.

You know it
Also if there was the possibility of unusuals in those gifts they would be worth more than if they had good games in them.
Audiosurf has achievements?

Apparently, when you complete an objective, you are given either coal or a gift. Coal can be saved and traded for a gift (and you are guaranteed a gift, instead of coal like before), or continue saving your coal for the big giveaway at the end.

Adding to OP.
I can't find that The Kid xmas adventure thing in Super Meat World.
edit: also where does this "coal" show up? i'm confused.
I dont believe that "prizes" section is real. All Steam games sounds too ridiculous, plus who would say that VCP is worse than 5 wishlist games? Iam pretty sure i wouldnt.
Just wait for Monday. We'll get official stuff then, I guess.
all games on steam
