Howdy everyone. So a few of us in the MC chat thread decided that we should try to organize a Facepunch megabuild to spice things up 'round here. I'll keep track of any important info in the OP, but as of now we just want some ideas tossed around. Suggest anything from the theme of the construct to the method we should approach it to the requirements (or lack thereof) for helping out. Anything agreed upon I'll put below.
Have at it.
Sounds interesting, I'd be willing.
Hmm, if enough people join I might join as well...
Since we're on the topic of ideas, what about an underground Dwarven city?
Seriously, think about it. I have yet to see any amazing attempts at something like this, and we could loosely base it off of the Dwarven city that Smaug inhabits in the "The Hobbit" series of books.

Gonna need a hellaciously deep map for that.
Might be worth it to look into a worldgen mod that would create such a world
I suggest a steampunk style, add voxelsniper, worldedit, and a world generator and we've got ourselves set for success.

Agreed, and it still works with the underground theme.
Honestly, I think underground works to be more of a challenge than anything else. You either have to find an existing cavern or create a natural-looking one yourself. If we round up enough players neither of those tasks should be too difficult, even without an editor.
I suggest medieval theme as well. We should do medieval nordic, in the spirit of Skyrim
I already built some stuff, and I posted it in the chat thread too but I don't want to seem like I'm advertising my building or trying to show off or anything but here it is

someone should hold a poll so we can decide on the theme

Well shit, if we're thinking Nordic we could do both a Dwarvin theme and the Medieval theme wrapped into a single Dwemer/Nordic settlement.
Nordic city over Dwemer ruins!
If we're going to do it under ground, we could duplicate the stone lair above already existing one so we have more room to do stuff. It would be cool to have an area big enough to have zeplins docked inside of the underground area.
I don't want to be a buzzkill, but we shouldn't think TOO big lest we let ourselves down when we realize we can't actually do something
We should make Valhallla

If we're dead-set on doing things underground, I'd suggest doing a "Kingdom of the dead".
Basically, above ground is a small cemetery with a crypt in the middle. Walk inside the crypt and down the stairs and you enter a massive city where the dead resides in the afterlife.
A bit like in "The Two Towers", but doesn't have to be themed the exact same way.

what about something like a huge abandoned quarantined city underground? Like [sp] Wonder City[/sp] from Arkham City?
I sadly have not played that so I don't know much about how it looks.
Either way, I don't think it will be easy to build an abandoned city that looks abandoned with a bunch of FP'ers residing there :v:
Well, first of all we should probably have a list with the people joining in - if everybody can just get on the server, we'll have problems at some point. I'm all for some underground zombie action, but I think it'll be a bit hard to get right. If we were to do it, I'd vote for something in the style of Minas Morgul:

Put that thing on an island in the underground, with water surrounding it (kinda like the River Styx), and you've got some creepy shit right there. To ensure that we are all base our opinions on the same points, we should probably agree on one texture pack - I'll propose PureBDCraft, even though it might look a little happy.
I made a fast mock-up of the style I was thinking, but take it with some kilos of salt:

tbh I highly doubt that any big FP collab will ever work, we should instead focus on a collab Challenge Map/ Temple sorta thing, with people making their own sections or something
Hey, you guys can count me in, so long as I only have to be a basic drone.
Also, I tend to fuck up the installation of mods, so I might be a bit later to the build than most people.
Edit:
Also, I propose we have some cool Redstone things in our city. Like an elevator of some sort for larger spires. Something that'll stand out, so when people look at it, they say "I didn't think this was possible with Redstone".
Good luck to you guys, the last really big project never got off the ground.
I assume you'll be making this legit then?
And if you need a server to reside in, feel free to come on mine. We could always use some company and it's well moderated enough to make sure your shit won't get wrecked.
After fucking a bit around, I'd say something underground is way top complex. The hole itself... will simply be boring and slow to do, and will probably look like shit anyway. Unless we use MCEdit or whatever, I'd say something at sea level is much easier, and much realistic.
I'd like to join this project.
I'd love to join this.
This sounds like it could be fun, so I wanna join.
I'd join, would be fun to build big stuff with other people for once.
Here's the Wikipedia guide to Norse architecture.

Maybe we could start by replicating something else instead of planning our own build, then we might have experience working together without too much crazy planning.
A VOIP program would be appreciated so we can talk about this easily, preferably one with a text based chat feature for people without microphones.
It's not the best example, but here's some Norse architecture in MC.

My vote is cast towards the Nordic theme with primarily above-ground construction. Underground may sound cool right now but it's more of a bitch to work in.
can we make something slightly original? how about a medieval city on a floating island, with a prison underside?

If we're going to be using anything other than the default skin pack then you'll have to do some guiding where to download it, where to put it, and where to activate it, because I usually don't bother with texture packs or mods due to being too much of a hassle.

I'm alright with doing a medieval town as our first project though. As for alternatives, we could also do an ancient egyptian city, or an arabian city, or a winterland of ice castles and igloos.
If we're successful with a basic Medieval kingdom, we should do something steampunky afterwards. Something a bit like Columbia from Bioshock Infinite.
