This is the way it is with the Zone: if you come back with swag - it's a miracle; if you come back alive - it's a success; if the patrol bullets miss you - it's a stroke of luck. And as for anything else - that's fate.

Welcome to the zone. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series is made up of three games as of now, Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat. Each game has its own set of unique experiences and features, and each game has a new twist upon the life of a Stalker.
The game series is based off of the Chernobyl Nuclear catastrophe, with it's own fictional additions. The zone is an irradiated hell hole that was formed after the second explosion at the powerplant, it's filled with anomalies and known to be home to deadly mutants. The zone is populated by scavengers nicknamed S.T.A.L.K.E.R's, which stands for "Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, Robber". There are also various other factions of stalkers which may be friendly, neutral, or hostile.
This is just a quick overview, for in depth information I recommend to go to the STALKER websites listed below. The Wiki is a bonus that holds extra information but does give away several spoilers.
- Good hunting S.T.A.L.K.E.R!

Oh yeah, and here's FP Stalkers 2011(we're gonna need a new one)
[t]http://i52.tinypic.com/x6c5mc.png[/t]
so much for having a dignified commemoration of GSC as the title
which is a good thing, of course.
Why did the last thread get closed?
I'm curious as to know why as well.
Garry says it's a December cleanup of huge threads.
As in, the Monolith didn't do it. Nor did the bandits, so get back to stalking.
Thanks for making a new thread, Cro!
If being not challenging at all is Stalkery then you're right
I get the criticism and I had a lot of problems with vanilla Call of Pripyat but it does play out largely the way you'd expect real life in the Zone to be like. There's not a lot of firefights which was indeed very disappointing but it also focuses more on actual stalking than the previous installments. The NPCs follow a day/night schedule and hunt actively for artifacts / mutants / each other by day and return to the base camps by night. This however, doesn't apply for all and bandits tend to stalk during the nighttime as well. While the NPC A-Life leaves a lot of things to be desired, there's also a lot improvements and the world feels a bit more "abandoned" as in you're not constantly bumping into stalkers and the environment feels very hostile in mods like Redux / IWA where after taking cover from a nasty blowout, the stalkers who didn't make it into cover turn into zombies and begin assaulting the safe harbours.
The game just would've desperately needed longer distances to "safe camps" and more chance for hostile stalkers to pop up and wreck your shit. I'm not talking about constant firefight either, just more of a chance to bump into Mercs / hostile faction troops when searching the Jupiter Factory / Pripyat hospital. The A-Life system should have been the centerpiece of the game, especially when GSC said that they're going to focus on freeplay in Call of Pripyat. I hope that STALKER 2 will have less "safe camps" so we can make proper "deep raids" into the Zone without saving so every encounter will feel tense since you could pretty much die from the lowliest bandit with a makarov if you're not careful.

This screenshot demonstrates a bit the problem with Call of Pripyat : Yeah, the areas are modeled really close to real-life locations which is good. They are still a bit too close to each other and it feels like there is no actual "trekking" to the destinations. You're almost instantly at your desired goal when you set out to explore the Zone. The problem is also enhanced by the rather central location of the safe harbours, so it doesn't feel as much taking a trip to the unknown than going out to your back yard. Call of Pripyat should have, in addition of the guides, have featured smaller "transition" levels between the areas so that there would've been some illusion of traveling when you go from one destination to another.
I agree. I think I was disappointed mostly because the northern parts of the Zone were supposed to be these freakish fields of anomalies and death, and what we got was a couple anomaly clusters and endless bushes & fields of grass
I agree with this as well in terms of difficulty. Now, Call of Pripyat's major "anomalies" were like sights in a public park : they are even marked on the map for one's convience! The design was almost at war with the fact that this was indeed supposed to be the mythical center of the Zone. Now, littering the ground with tiny anomalies like it's fucking Mordor wouldn't have been the proper way to do it either but the major anomalies should've served as ways to restrict the player's movement, trapping him into buildings and basically impeding their progress. Sure, you could save time by taking a shortcut but there are these weird anomalies you have to pass through. Or you think you could cut through a forest to evade a Monolith checkpoint but the area is covered by the "Dead Zone" anomaly which means your electronics won't work, making it very inadvisable go travel at night.
But the Bandits are awesome, specially in Clear Sky

My S.T.A.L.K.E.R. boner is raging hard right now.
I'll start a new game of SoC and kill everyone in honor of GSC.
And I managed to collect 2000 kg worth of AKs in CoP :v:

You better get writing son. I'll be disappointed if there isn't at least 1 paravin story.
Just noticed something interesting.
There's quite an amount of finns in the Stalker threads. Why, other than Stalker is a great fucking game?
Oh and I'm gonna play SGM for the first time. Let's fucking show this Alpha team or whatever they are who's boss. Never played this before but they can't be too hard, right?
I just wanna take this time to say that out of all the threads on Facepunch, the STALKER series megathread has always had me laugh. You guys are the greatest bunch of regulars to grace the existence of a thread, and without all of you I doubt the STALKER megathreads would be much fun. Paravin's disgusting fanfiction, the monolith page, page 34... all of that is what makes these threads great. It's like a forum within a forum. It's something so unique that you can't find anywhere else on Facepunch.
Here's to another get thread and another year, STALKERS.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
