Thread for talking about filmmaking in DOTA. Here's a short guide for getting the most out of filmmaking in DOTA. FAQ How do I record films in DOTA? There's a few ways. First off, it's best to record a DOTA film through a DOTA replay. You can do this by clicking on your name in the DOTA 2 main menu, viewing your recent games, and clicking on the game you want to record. From there, download a replay and fire up the replay editor. The best way to record is arguably straight from DOTA via the built-in Source Recorder. ralje's "Recording in DOTA 2 Like a Boss" guide covers how to create HD clips easily with the Recorder: http://www.playdota.com/guides/recording-in-dota-2-like-a-boss Alternatively, you can use an external recorder like Dxtory and FRAPS. Using this kind of software can cause skips, hiccups, framerate loss, or even a loss in quality, but they are (save for Dxtory) very easy to setup and use. Dxtory is known for being a much higher-quality tool than FRAPS, but Dxtory also requires more setup and know-how to operate. The DOTA replay editor is pretty useful, but are there any more features? There are actually a few hidden features that Valve hasn't fully implemented yet. Cyborgmatt went over these replay features months ago at the start of February, but, since then, the replay system has been overhauled slightly and some of the features have changed. Most of the commands still work, however. Head on over to: http://www.cyborgmatt.com/2012/02/dota-2-tips-for-movie-makers/ to check it out. Here's a main run through of what Cyborgmatt found, however. All of the following require console to be enabled: - dota_free_camera 1 - Allows panning of the camera to allow horizontal views, bird's eye views, or simple camera angle changes. Works with free camera, directed, and hero chase, however, you recieve the most creative freedom through free camera. - dota_camera_distance x - Allows the camera to zoom in or zoom out further. This is very useful for dota_free_camera, as your middle mouse's zoom-in/zoom-out capabilities are lost in free_camera. The distance is extremely useful for recording, as it allows close-ups or a bird's eye view that you really can't accomplish with the static camera. The higher the number, the higher the distance. - dota_render_crop_height 0 AND dota_render_y_inset 0 - Increases the size of the rendered game. Best used together with dota_free_camera; however, these two console commands are excellent for forcing the viewer's eyes on your gameplay. - dota_hide_cursor 1 , dota_no_minimap 1 , dota_hud_healthbars 0 - These commands remove the cursor, minimap, and healthbars from play. - dota_sf_hud_actionpanel 0 , dota_sf_hud_channelbar 0 , dota_sf_hud_chat 0 , dota_sf_hud_inventory 0 , dota_sf_hud_top 0 - These commands remove action/ability panel, channeling bar, chat and kill log, inventory section, and the top hud, respectively. - “portrait_width” “0″“portrait_height” “0″ - Remove the hero portrait from the screen. The other GUI commands don't quite accomplish this. Is there an autoexec which makes recording easier? Yes. http://dota2.cyborgmatt.com/screenshot.cfg Removes most of the HUD to allow the filmmaker to jump straight into recording. Here's a sample video of what the free_camera and camera_distance controls can do:

dat refresher orb zeus ult
Anyone care to share their Vegas render settings?
I usually set project settings on best render quality and just use .wmv with 100 picture quality and 30 fps. If you have a good internet connection then there's better codecs than your standard windows one, but otherwise it does a decent job of balancing size & quality. So long as it's setup right.
Here are some of mine:
Nice. Have you done any videos recently?
Whats the song in the Op's video?
Freedom by Avicii. Their most famous song is probably Levels, which is in a lot of commercials and other things.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46FTXJXeONM&feature=plcp recording this and editing it was a bitch virtualdub and vegas were fucking up so please excuse the quality of the video
That music makes no sense! You didn't win the battle!
i won the battle by running away!!! besides pudge ended up killing him if you read the text
Very useful op reimu, this has given me some great ideas for improving my casting; my main concern with the source recorder though was that you had to do everything via the .tiff per frame way, rather than it encoding it into a video file like a .mov. Did they fix the startmovie_name.h264 command? (Or something like that can't remember off the top of my head) because that would be a lifesaver, fraps gives me loads of shit trying to play and record at the same time.
recording this and editing it was a bitch virtualdub and vegas were fucking up so please excuse the quality of the video
Yeah I've had some bad experiences using Source Recorder and virtualdub as well. I just decided to move to FRAPS because it's much more stabler in DOTA for some reasons. You should try giving Dxtory a shot; gives nice quality without having to deal with virtualdub. Like I suggested to NomadicNinja though, you might want to try Dxtory. IIRC it's not as intensive as FRAPS, but it is a bit of a pain to setup. You should try using an autoexec for dota_free_camera (or even camera distance) during casting though c:. If you practice with it and get it down right, your casting will really stick out.
I made that :< edit: The header post should specify that this thread also hosts videos that aren't rendered in Dota 2, right?
audio gets fucked up on source recorder which i used to make that vid i'm just going to switch over to fraps because source recorder seems fucked in this game for some reason
Yeah, audio usually goes out of synch and framerates skip. Try out the H264 codec if you haven't already though.

I highly recommend source recorder if you are interested in having good quality videos. Render test I did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFsnA0lJ4qQ&hd=1

in my opinion you should try to avoid using slow-mo for the whole vid. its fine to show the play for a second time in slow motion, but the full video slowed is painful to watch
in my opinion you should try to avoid using slow-mo for the whole vid. its fine to show the play for a second time in slow motion, but the full video slowed is painful to watch
Yeah you shouldn't have slow mo early on and after. BUT, during the hook, remember to do SUPER SLOW MO then rewind the hook throw 10 times in normal speed before you show zeus getting hit, and then replay that a few times, with super slow mo and speed at the same time. Remember to mess with bloom and make it black and white and somewhat blurry. Edit: By the way, does anyone want to tell me how to make super pro videos? Is it just to download Sony Vegas and mess with random things?

How do I make this work please, thanks! [editline]8th December 2012[/editline] also is there a way to smooth camera movements in free camera mode? when I move the mouse the angle change is abrupt, I would like angle movement acceleration to be as smooth as possible, also when the mouse stops, is this possible?
