Spelunky is a 2D side scrolling game with heavy rogue-like elements, made by Derek Yu waaaay back in 2008. The game was a blistering, unforgiving, yet charming game where you took control of a little Indiana Jones lookalike in search for a city of gold and riches. You have 4HP and had to get through several stages to reach the end, the neat thing about it though is that a couple years later Microsoft approached Derek asking him and his team at Mossmouth to create a Xbox Live Arcade version, and so he did. Years later it released (just a couple days ago actually) and go figure, it's even harder, and it has a ton of new secret stuff and items as well as totally redrawn graphics and redone music. It's currently on a timed XBLA exclusivity contract though so it may be awhile for it to hit steam. If you want you can download the freeware version here. It's free! It's somewhat hard to describe the gameplay in a nutshell. You're given 4 bombs, 4 ropes, and 4 hearts to reach the end, through about 16 deadly levels, that have shifting environments every 4 stages (4 is death you know). You will die, a lot, and at first you should just concern yourself with paying tunnel man (a NPC that shows up each time you enter a new "world") to open shortcuts till' you feel comfy enough to make a run through the whole game on your skill alone. Here's a short guide on what you can run into. Important things to note Generated Effects: Sometimes a stage is just a stage, other times it has a random "curse" put on it that changes it drastically, from turning enemies into zombies, to making bosses show up, effects randomly happen at the start of a stage and always mix things up. Shops!: There are multiple types of shops in the game, but be prepared to get murdered by the shopkeep several times. While they stock things you absolutely must have most of the time, if you show any aggression to shopkeeps they'll whip out a shotgun and chase you down, nothing can stop them when they're in a rage! Worse part is, if a monster walks in and taps the shopkeep, you'll be blamed! Shopkeeps aggro lasts until the world is clear (i.e. finish the mines, the jungle shopkeeps will be normal) though if you kill a shopkeeper, you're fucked for the rest of the game. Damsels: The only way to recover health reliably is through a kiss, you'll come across girls (or dudes and pups in the XBLA version) who you need to carry to the goal, and if they survive they'll reward you with a hit point Sacrificial Alter: Place knocked out or dead enemies on it to gain favor with Kali, you'll gain items, health and other goodies for doing it. KO'd enemies get you more points, and a Damsel gets you a full rank up right off the bat! Idols: Golden totems that activate traps when picked up, traps depending on which stage you're on (Mines for example launches a boulder at you.) Bring it to the exit for a shit ton of cash. Ghost: After 2 minutes 30 seconds in any given stage, a ghost will show up and the music will distort, the ghost is a one hit kill that actively hunts you down and can go through walls. There's a hidden bonus to him however, in any gem he can pass over turns into a ultra rare diamond, if you can navigate around him and get them you'll be much richer for it, though it's super dangerous. The Mines The starting area for everyone's adventure, the mines despite being world 1 hold a nasty amount of traps as it introduces you to all the evil things you can expect from this game. Generated Effects "Snakes... I hate snakes!": A snake pit has formed, a long drop with a ton of snakes at the bottom as well as treasure! "I can't see a thing!" : The lights go out and you're surrounded in darkness, you have to use a torch to see "My skin is crawling!" : XBLA exclusive, spawns a shit ton of boss spiders in close range to each other. Enemies Skeletons = If you see a skull, approach with caution, Skeletons spring up to attack when you draw near! Snakes = They're goombas, blue ones can spit acid Spiders = Come in two types, one waits on the ceiling for you to walk under it and another just goes up and down Cavemen = When they see you they go apeshit and bumrush you, other then that easy to deal with. Bats = They're literally everywhere, walk near them and they wake up and slowly flutter to you. Boss Spider = Gigantic spider, spawns with two webs underneath it, has 10HP and is pretty lethal, killing it gives you sticky bombs. Traps Spike Pit = One hit kills, you can run through them if you're on the same level as them, or if you do a soft jump onto them. Arrow trap = Gray blocks with faces on them. Step in front of one and get shot, good idea to throw a rock/pot/skull/damsel to take the blow for you, can only shoot once. TNT = Rare blocks that explode if anything hits them. The Jungle The Jungle is the first roadblock many players face, there's a shit ton of danger and it introduces a lot of 1-hit kills Generated Effects "I hear rushing water..." : The stage's bottom is a giant river with a gigantic man eating piranha in it, and a TON of little piranha as well "The dead are restless!" : The place gets a dark mist over it, and zombies roam around as well as vampires. If you can find Ash's grave make sure you blow it up, also key to a secret XBLA exclusive level... "I can't see a thing!" : Same as Mines, you start with a torch and must find your way. Enemies Frogs: Blue frogs that jump around, simply stomping them kills them Fire Frogs: Red/Orange frogs, when you jump or hit them they'll freeze up and explode like a bomb. Maneaters: Plants that'll devour you in a single touch, in the Freeware version they can be killed with spike boots, but in the XBLA version, a single touch is death. Caveman: Same as the mines Piranha: Usually one or two in a single lake, though a certain event can cause a ton to spawn. Monkey: Will latch onto you and try to steal your items and knock you unconscious for awhile. Found over spike pits. Jaws: Only shows up on rushing water stages, boss fish that'll rip you apart, drops good items if you can manage to somehow kill it. Zombies: Only shows up on certain stages, weak bouncing Chinese zombies, a single hit dispatches them. Vampires: Can steal your health, turn into a bat and have plenty of HP, hard to deal with but if you do you get a cape, allowing you to slow your falls drastically. Tribalman: Caveman with a boomerang (XBLA Only) Bees: Gigantic ass Bee's that want to fill you full of holes, there's a queen bee who drops royal jelly (+4 HP) but is a pain to kill (XBLA Only) Traps Tiki Traps: Your worst nightmare. Columns that jut spikes out every time something approaches, almost always a insta kill. Spike Pits: Spikes are still around, but now you have long stretches of them with vines you need to grapple across, usually has a monkey over them to throw you into the spikes. Ice Caves Ice Caves are unique in the fact it's the only set of levels without a floor, you can easily fall into a bottomless pit here and die, a jetpack, cape, climbing gloves, or plenty of rope is needed for the most safety here. Generated Effects "It smells like wet fur in here!" : A bunch of yeti and a boss yeti have spawned, be careful not to anger the boss yeti if you don't wanna fight it. "I feel a psychic force!": A alien ship is on the stage with a boss alien in it, it fires out one hit kill tracking shots, but if you manage to kill it you can find a jetpack in the wall behind it (use a bomb to uncover it!) "It feels like the fourth of July!": A lot more aliens spawn, but you can find a machine in the top left or right area, if you can climb inside it with rope or gloves or a jetpack you go to a hidden world (XBLA EXCLUSIVE) Enemies Yeti : Friendly motherfuckers, as long as you don't get too close anyway, just walk back and forth doing a lot of nothing, if you get to close they'll throw you all over the place, likely into the abyss. Aliens: Small UFO's that zip around and try to blow up the land under you. When hit the ship crashes and explodes like a bomb, and the pilot tries to escape to hinder you further. Mama Alien: Giant alien in the back of the crashed ship, shoots slow moving homing shots and hides behind a barrier. Papa Yeti: Giant Yeti that if it see's you it'll roar, causing ice to fall from the roof to kill you, defeating the yeti gets you a few equips. Usually surrounded by the smaller Yeti. Mammoths: Walk back and forth on small paths shooting ice at you, if hit you'll be frozen solid, and if the mammoth touches you while frozen you're crushed. (XBLA Only) Traps Spring pads: Hard to spot at first but walking over one will shoot you in the sky, super dangerous if you aren't paying attention Bottomless Pit: You'll die if you fall in! (duh) Landmines: Silver plates with a orange button, if anything (enemy included) walks over one it'll set off a timer then explode, destroying terrain around you. They can also be picked up and thrown if you're careful. Ice: Most of the floor is slick, so take it slow! Crumble Platforms: You'll see strange thin ice blocks, standing on them for too long makes them break underneath you, usually dropping you onto spikes. Falling Platforms: Stand on these for too long and they'll plummet down to the abyss, you can ride them if you want, just be sure to jump off to avoid death/fall damage. You cannot grab ledges while falling on these! JUMP! The Temple -No man has survived to get a photo yet!- Generated Effects "I hear prayers to Kali": A sacrificial alter is somewhere in the stage, and a lot of cultist, you can find a Damsel and a gold idol being stored somewhere, if you grab the idol you die, save the lady! "I can't see a thing!": Everyone's favorite effect. Enemies Cavemen: Same as they've always been Cultist: Same as Cavemen, wear a beak helmet Fire Dude: They pop out of lava with 200 HP, and eventually burn out and die, aren't that big of a problem. King Tut: Huge ass mummy that shoots a shotgun of locust at you, insanely dangerous but drops a amazing weapon (PC only for the weapon) Croc Cultist: Spazzy little assholes who run around teleporting, can one shot you if they teleport on top of you (XBLA version only) Anubis: Floats slowly after you wielding a scepter that shoots one shot kill homing shots that slowly track you, kill him to get the scepter. (XBLA version only, this is the weapon the mummy gives in the PC version) Anubis 2: A strangely colored one found in the city of gold if you meet requirements, chases you summoning a shit ton of red skeletons to maul you (XBLA version only) Traps Tiki Traps: From the Jungle Lava Pits: Like spikes but worse! Can spawn fire dudes. Thwomps: Instant kill fast moving blocks, if you move adjacent to them in a certain range they'll come flying at you trying to crush you. And that's about it, not counting the final boss or the XBLA hidden levels, and the other mountain of content in the game. I highly suggest checking it out really and hope my makeshift guide is useful to those who dare brave the cavern :v:! I spent many hours in the original PC version. I hope they port this new version to PC, I'd love to play it.
I got back into the PC once this came out. In the good news area the creator guy said its quite possible he will port it over to PC.
I'd love to get it, but I don't have the money and I'm hoping for a PC release. I had a hard time with the controls of the first one though. Like after playing Cave Story on the Wii and playing the steam version it's almost impossible for me to be good again. z,x and c and arrow key controls are just awkward and never seem to work together for me.
$15 is a bit on the expensive side, IMO. I dunno, maybe I'm just a cheap-ass, but I feel like $10 would be more reasonable. Also I don't really like the new art style. I thought the pixelated, 16-bit-sort-of graphics of the original were charming and fitting. The new art just looks... meh.
Just read this was made with game maker.
Just read this was made with game maker.
Yeah, the original freeware version was. Pretty sure Derek said that was dropped for the XBLA one though :v: Edit: In regards to the artstyle, I like it, though there should be a way to switch it to retro if you wanted.
I love Spelunky. I've played it 500 times. And beaten it 15. Also, I highly recommend the Tastes Like Spelunky mod. It allows you to play as one of the man-eating plant enemies. Spelunkyman and the tunnel man may appear once in each run, but you can eat them to gain an extra heart. Same goes for cavemen, damsels, etc, but there's a limit to how many things you can eat. Also, you can eat items to gain their abilities. For example, if you eat a shotgun, you'll be able to fire shotgun pellets out of your mouth. It adds some replayability to the game if you've done pretty much all there is to do, like me. I think once you make it to the city of gold as tunnel man, you've pretty much beaten the shit out of the game.

Also sounds like you'd be into this new version as it adds more past the final boss :v:
Played the PC version hell of a lot some time ago. And I just bought the XBLA version today. I really enjoy it! But I'm kind of rusty right now. Have anyone tried the new co-op feature? I'll be trying it out tomorrow with a friend I think. The only think I dislike at the moment is the music though, some of the tracks just doesn't quite fit I think.
I know Northernlion is pretty popular as a let's player, he did a first impressions video (and judging by comments plans on doing a series)
This title couldn't be more perfect. I played this way back when it was first released, I remember waiting eagerly for the weekly or so releases which would better the game. God, when he first added the shop, it was the most awesome thing ever. Great game! Play it!
Playing the PC Version, just got to Jungle for the first time. Music is awesome.
i really want the new gameplay improvements of the 360 version but i'm not really fond of the graphics or the new music, not as good as the original
Yeah I definitely prefer the pixel art graphics. I just want more content, more than anything.
i really want the new gameplay improvements of the 360 version but i'm not really fond of the graphics or the new music, not as good as the original
some of the music sounds really Commander Keen esque. I can dig it.
I think they used a Yamaha or whatever it is for the music, it sounds like it would be right at home on a Genesis.
I'm really not a huge fan of the new art or sounds/music for this one. It's just not fitting. Although I'm happy that a great PC game, a free one mind you, has been introduced to console gamers. And he can make some money with it too.
Starting to think I'm the only one who finds the new artwork charming, the walking animation slightly bugs me, but it's barely noticeable when you're running around :v: Ah well
I dunno, it just kind of looks bleh. It's not terribly memorable and the color palette is kind of distracting. I'm also not a big fan of the new music. I wish they had just updated the old tracks. Anyways, is there actually a lot of new content in the XBLA version? I know there's multiplayer, but that sounds like a terrible way to play Spelunky. From playing the demo I've noticed one or two new enemies and heavily tweaked physics, but nothing seems to be worth $15 to me honestly. Like I said, I guess I'm just a massive cheap-ass but I feel like this game is most comparable (commercially) to The Binding of Isaac, which is selling for a whopping $5... the $15 price point just feels like it was slapped on because that's somehow become the going rate for XBLA games.

This looks like a lot of fun. Shame it isnt on Steam yet. Give it time I guess.
Meh There are mods with a lot of new features without out of place graphics and music, I don't care if this comes out on pc or not
I don't understand "out of place" graphics. It's not like Spelunky had a super serious tone to it.
I don't understand "out of place" graphics. It's not like Spelunky had a super serious tone to it.
Kinda echoing it, it's cool if you prefer the retro graphics or not all crazy about the new ones in general but... it fits the style.
I always cheated on the dice roll minigame in the pc version. I forgot how I did it though. Something like throwing it against the sign and then catching it right before it hits the ground to see what it landed on. [editline]8th July 2012[/editline] Also, it took me so many runthroughs to find out that those flying gold things during lights out levels give you money when you touch them. I always just threw shit at them
Needs more updated PC version. (also online co op) Edit: So I decided to try the old version because its there and its probably good. I found a dice rolling thing, and proceeded to spend the next few minutes rolling over and over, winning every item and shit tons of cash. Then suddenly a white shape appeared and I realized ghosts are unkillable and I fucked myself over by waiting so long. Edit2: Find another dicing game. Throw dices upwards as I always do. And then suddenly my throw became extremely high and punched the shop keeper in the face. Pitchers Mit, I hate you. Edit3: Open chest. Expect gems. Bomb. Dead.
I started playing this on PC, I hate those fucking tiki traps...
I started playing this on PC, I hate those fucking tiki traps...
I've realized I am fucking terrible at this game. 50 or so tries, I reached jungle two times, both those times I died to something stupid.
