There has been a lot of discussion over the last 24 hours regarding our requirement that Fnatic plays with Era at The International, and how it differs from Fear’s substitution in Evil Geniuses. In cases like this, we think being fully transparent is the right approach. Hopefully this sheds some light onto the situation for everyone.
If you are not familiar with the situation we are referring to, please read Fnatic’s update first.
There have been a number of situations over the years, both public and private, where we have had to make difficult decisions around player involvement in The International. A few months ago, Fear from Evil Geniuses developed an injury that could jeopardize his ability to play. As a result, EG had been playing with their proposed substitute, Mason. EG informed us that there was a high likelihood that Fear wouldn’t be cleared medically to compete. With the data of his injury brought to our attention well before invites were decided, we discussed whether or not EG with Mason would still be above the bar for an invite. We agreed they were, and invited EG knowing that it could be either player on the team. When Fear’s medical options ran out, we changed the invite from Fear to Mason.
We review each roster change brought to our attention on a case-by-case basis, with the goal being to make the best decision for players and fans. At the point where there appears to be other agendas in play, our default position will always be to protect the individual players ability to compete in the tournament they were invited to. This is the pattern we followed based on the data we received, specifically the assertion from Era on June 13th that he was healthy and ready to play, and that the team was not acting in his best interests. All of the correspondence between Valve and Fnatic on this issue can be found below.
On May 29th, we were contacted by Patrik Sattermon from Fnatic. He said that Era was dealing with some serious medical issues, and they had concerns about his ability to play. That e-mail is shown below. We expressed our concern for Era’s health and asked to be kept in the loop on how things were going. Fnatic participated in The Summit with Xcalibur as their stand-in.
wow, they have alot of stuff to back them up.
So basically fnatic are a bunch of scumbags who tried to replace a player by inciting drama against Valve and Valve turned right around and threw them under a bus. Serves them right, the fuckers
In short: Sucks, but we have to draw the line somewhere.
Understandable.
tl;dr:
With all this said, I had a skype coference with the team 2 days ago when they returned from LA. They said that they don’t trust my health state and think it would be a risky and bold move to take me to TI as I can’t go back to the bootcamp with them, therefore, they pretty much had me fired of the team (still contract signed) for the rest of the summer, as they think they can do “better” with a Standin. So, my question here is, are they allowed to do that? Espicially knowing that I CAN play at TI 4.
Best regards, Adrian
I told you guys they wanted to double cross Era because they believed excalibur is a better player.
Excalibur is a great player, no doubt about that, but to backstab a teammate like that is fucking atrocious. If that's true, obviously.
In court, something that is morally bad but lawfully good is going to happen. Rules are rules, even if it doesn't feel that great to abide by them.
Fnatic may be at a disadvantage due to lack of practice with Era, but those are the rules.
am i understanding this right that they're (allegedly) trying to make era look unfit for the invitational because currently era is invited and not excalibur, but excalibur is performing really well and fnatic would rather have excalibur than era at the invitational
I mean ultimately they were scared/unsure of Era's ability to play and wanted a better chance at money.
When you think about how much money is on the line, people are going to be super competitive about it.
Eras email is really sad. It shows a person who desperately wants to play, so much so that he's assuming the worst for a team that he is so close to.
it also seems like fnatics management was not aware that era contacted VALVe and so they tryed to or seemingly tried to pull a fast one
Big props to Valve for being so transparent so quickly. Looks like they've learned from the last community outbreak, which is good.

I don't think they wanted to change the roster because they suddenly found someone that completely outclasses Era. Xcalibur simply seems like the more reliable employee to them (tho Era's doctors would like to differ in this case apparently).
People will do anything for a shot at a million dollars. That being said, there is no obvious proof of anything but each party wanting what is best for them. Pointing pitchforks at this point will solve nothing since the issue has been resolved. Era is playing or Fnatic isn't playing, just like their invitation said.
i would just have Excalibur there just incase something happens but bring him as a friend of the team not a stand in. that said I would also not have tried to replace someone who is cleared with his doctors to go.

Drama incoming.
He deleted it.
Era explains the situation from his perspective; since writing the email to Valve, he's changed his mind and would prefer if Xcaliber took his place.

i had a feeling era's letter to valve was mostly him just trying to fight through it before he understood the full breadth of his condition
Well, anyway, from the perspective of the whole Fnatic organisation they would have better odds of getting some money by playing with Xcalibur, and they are concerned about Era's health, but I also can understand that at first he felt just dumped, despite the illness. For a Dota player to skip International after all the years of dedicated work, its just so hard.
idk Era could be just really upset that his team doesn't trust him

Not a fanboy or anything (I don't even watch pro that much) but when someone has some severe irregular health issues you really need to be careful about future cases.
Like if I was Era and I was told "No it's unwise to have you at The International" then I would probably be super pissed.

Era is going to TI4, XCalibur will be acting as a coach.
I feel so sorry for Era, he's obviously getting the boot past TI4 and Fnatic really wanted to play with Xcalibur.
Well, I hope it's for the best. Good luck to 'em. I'm sure Era is going to get a ton of fan support when he's in Seattle, so there is that.
